THE LORD OF THE RINGS: New Movies Set In Middle-Earth Officially In Development

We're not sure exactly which characters/time periods they'll focus on, but it's now been officially confirmed that Warner Bros. is working on new movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings...

Confirming rumors that did the rounds last year, the trades (via SFFGazette.com) are reporting that more movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy adventure novels, The Lord of the Rings, are officially in the works.

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros Pictures have signed a new multi-year agreement with Embracer Group AB’s Middle-Earth Enterprises to develop new movies set in Middle-earth.

It's very early days, and we have no idea which time period/Age these films will take place in, but WBD now has access to the trilogy's most iconic characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Frodo and Gollum.

“We understand how cherished these works are and working together with our partners at New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, we plan to honor the past, look to the future, and adhere to the strongest level of quality and production values,” said Lee Guinchard, CEO of Freemode.

Warner Bros. film bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy also weighed in, making it clear that they have no interest in a retread of Peter Jackson's films.

“Twenty years ago, New Line took an unprecedented leap of faith to realize the incredible stories, characters and world of The Lord of the Rings on the big screen. The result was a landmark series of films that have been embraced by generations of fans. But for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film. The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure.”

Jackson and his writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have released a statement in response to the news, and it sounds like they may actually be involved with these new films in some capacity.

“Warner Brothers and Embracer have kept us in the loop every step of the way,” the Oscar-winning trio said. “We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”

@Reeds2Much - 😂 That chapter or so from the Fellowship of the Ring is something I missed in the Jackson movies, which I happen to think are awesome movies.

@Reeds2Much -

Actually think 💬 about Bombadil's adaptation pretty often 🤔

Brendan Gleeson could absolutely knock it out of the park ☀️✨✨✨✨⭐⚾ 🏞️

@Scripturepoetic - that is an absolutely phenomenal fancasting choice. I can absolutely see him as Bombadil 100%

@RolandD -

If only Guillermo Del Toro could come back to the director's chair 🪑 and give us a timeless incarnation of Old Tom Bombadillo

A scene between Brian Cox as Farmer Maggot (hopefully, a scene that corrects Peter Jackson's characterization with a more deviant performance)

and someone like Brendan Gleeson rounding out Tom's dimensionality

@Super12 -

I would really like to see the depth of relationship Tom Bombadil and Farmer Maggot share (I especially want to see Farmer Maggot redeemed on screen, as having much more defiance and ferocity)

Gleeson against Brian Cox, would fit the layered portrayals these characters are hinted as being in Tolkien's writings

@Super12 -

I support revisiting Middle-Earth to correct and flesh out, Peter Jackson's existing depictions, as exemplary as the OG "LOTR" and many aspects of "The Hobbit" (Faramir, being a great candidate to revisit/re-characterize/recontextualize)

Although,
Bombadil does capture my imagination

Farmer Maggot's portrayal as someone with more agency, is also something I very much hope will be corrected and addressed

#Brian Cox = Farmer Maggot

@Scripturepoetic - they aren't remaking LOtR buddy. These films are going to be new stuff we haven't seen on screen. Appendices probably playing a big part.

The Animé coming out is going to annihilate "Blings of Power"

WB's strategy is definitely NOT going to retread a product they are still making profit on

I was posting inspirational thoughts 💭, but WB is definitely going to be tackle the IP with the intent to win the race

and they aren't limited to live-action

@dracula - kind of crazy how they [frick]ed up the hobbit. rings of power kind of feels like it was doomed to fail though

@tmp3 - seriously should have just been 1 movie, with none of the forced lord of the rings cameos. (and made in 2005 when it was suppose to before drama between jackson and the studio) Seriously they filmed it as two movies and then had to film more so the studio could have a trilogy. there is no way that was ever going to work out.

@tmp3 - Rings of Power was doomed to fail the second the creators thought they could do Tolien's world better than him by putting their BS politics in it.

Imagine that. Being so full of yourself that you think you can "fix" Tolkien's world. [frick]ing Tolkien. One of the most legendary writers and creators of fiction to ever live.

The beauty of Tolkien's 'Legendarium', rests in it's sense of myth-making. It is a scale of world-building built on stories built upon stories through extremely large expanses of internally recorded time, but also, sometimes forgotten, or re-interpreted by cultures or unreliable narrators, even though Tolkien's authorial intent binds his universe together in obsessive detail

There is room now, for other visits, now that the definitive story has been chronicled through "TLOTR" trilogy

For example, as I have mentioned, there are passing stories that were marginalized or distorted to serve Peter Jackson's version of Tolkien's most recognizable stories

There is still room for improvement or re-contextualization

Middle-Earth stories don't necessarily need to adhere to slavish canonical restrictions

There is room for characters to be re-explored, from the perspective of characters or cultures

For example,
There are great character study opportunities with characters like Denethor, which could be deconstructed by a skillful thespian, like Joaquin Phoenix

There is a deep analysis on 'chivalry', through Faramir's story

Cast

Andrew Garfield as Faramir

Emma Stone as Eowyn

Joaquin Phoenix as Denethor

Tom Hiddleston as Boromir

with James Mangold directing 📽️

and you have another way of looking at one of countless stories set in a neverending setting based on myths and story-telling
