Are we finally going to meet Sauron?

The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power just delivered its most action-packed and explosive (literally) episode yet with "Udûn," and Prime Video (via SFFGazette.com) has now shared a teaser for next Friday's sure-to-be eventful instalment.

Major spoilers for episode 6 follow.

Just when all seemed to be going well for Galadriel, Arondir, Halbrand and the Númenorians, we learned that Adar (who confirms his origin to Galadriel) had pulled a bait-and-switch, giving the sinister sword hilt to the traitorous Waldreg to carry back to the watchtower.

Placing what we now know to be a key into the statue of Sauron, the floodgates opened and water flowed beneath the Southlands (so that's why the Orcs were digging tunnels), causing the long-dormant Mount Doom to erupt.

We're given a glimpse of the aftermath here, as Galadriel awakens to find the entire area covered in red ash; The Southlands will soon be known as Mordor.

This obviously opens the door to The Dark Lord making his presence felt, but don't be surprised if they hold off on that big reveal for the season finale.

The rest of the promo spotlights Durin and Elrond attempting to convince the former's father to allow them to mine for Mithril (we know that doesn't end well), and Nori's apparent mistrust of The Stranger following the re-emergence of his dark power last week.

Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power stars Morfydd Clark, Benjamin Walker, Charles Edwards, Charlie Vickers, Markella Kavenagh, Nazanin Boniadi, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Tyroe Muhafidin, Maxim Baldry, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Ema Horvath, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Leon Wadham, Daniel Weyman, and Sara Zwangobani.

So the Balrog is being teased right? Also, Galadriel should have been teaching the residents of Pompeii how to survive a volcano eruption lol!

IGN gave this episode a ten LOL. So it was as good as Fellowship, Two Towers and Return? If not better? It was a mild improvement on the previous eps, otherwise still a dud

My review of this show….

Up until this episode I couldn’t find positive reviews of this show. Now with one episode getting praise all these “I love this show” people are coming out of the woodwork. Where the hell were they the last few weeks!?

@TheFireForce - being denigrated for their opinion.

@TheFireForce - This episode was as bad as the previous episodes, it just had some more action, which wasn't that hard.

@TheFireForce - Sometimes it’s hard or annoying to just like something nowadays. I’ve loved this show since episode 1 but the specter of having to constantly defend my positive experiences to a bunch of people I swear must hate at least 80% of the stuff they watch is exhausting. So much easier to just avoid those articles and let myself just enjoy this great show in peace, while being oblivious to whatever they are crying about in their echo chambers.

@TheUnworthyThor - I have been railing upon the canon fidelity but also have found myself enjoying the overall product more than not enjoying. You shouldn’t have to defend opinion to anyone. Yes, the show is disrespectful to the source material but if you enjoy it, no one can take that away from you

What I feel the need to rail on, however, is when certain things are posited as fact and canon that are anything but, in order to bully a narrative that, while convenient to the showrunners’ aspirations, is actually anything but

@SauronthePower - disrespectful or different?

@Itwasme - I should probably parse my opinions more carefully. I find that the ‘different’ in this case really is flat out disrespectful, but that’s just me (and a fair swath of others, I surmise). The show is enjoyable on its own merits (a lot of it from the technical side) but, like I mentioned earlier, once you attach the Tolkien name to the product, you then attach the pre-established mythos canon and all that that entails at which point derivations become a game of diminishing returns when dealing with someone of Tolkien’s ability, stature, and influence vs a couple of randoms with a paper thin resume ego-railing against the pre-established customer set in order to deflect attention from the rather slapdash writing

@SauronthePower - I haven't watched it yet and I'm not a Tolkein fan, so as a total outsider can you give me an example of how it's disrespectful? In your opinion of course. No judgement or anything.

@SauronthePower - As someone who have never read any Tolkien and therefore has no idea what is faithful or not I definitely just enjoy it for what it is. And I’m loving the characters and the world and the story. In addition though by being an avid comic book reader I’m already conditioned to be pliant to the idea of a certain amount of modification from the source material.

@TheUnworthyThor - a very good point and something which I need to be more open to. Like I said, I do actually like a lot of what I see but am also saddened by what could have been 🤷‍♂️
