While this week's episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power doesn't move the overall story forward very much from where we left off last Friday, it does jump around to all of the main plot-lines, and the groundwork is laid for a major event that should be very familiar to Tolkien fans.

Spoilers for episode 5, "Partings," follow.

As it turns out, Durin's father was right to have his doubts about Gil-Galad's reasons for sending Elrond to Khazad-dûm, as the Elven King admits that what he's really after is the "miracle ore" known as Mithril. Gil-Galad believes that the precious metal is the only thing that can save the Elven race, who will be doomed if they are unable to reignite the light of the Valinor.

While explaining this to Elrond, he recounts the tale of a battle between a mighty Elven warrior (possibly based on Glorfindel) and a Balrog of Morgoth. The pair fought over a tree which was believed to contain the last of the lost Silmarils. During their clash, lightning struck the tree and drove the power of the jewels deep into the Misty Mountains, resulting in the creation of Mithril.

This particular legend doesn't have any basis in Tolkien's lore, and appears to have been added to the show in order to explain the origin of Mithirl - and the presence of a Balrog in the Dwarven kingdom that will come to be known as Moria!

Yes, it looks like The Rings of Power will be taking some liberties with the timeline by having the Dwarves "delve too greedily and too deep," unleashing the Balrog that ultimately comes face-to-face with Gandalf in The Fellowship of the Ring.

Will "Durin's Bane" earn his moniker this season by putting an end to the fan-favorite Dwarf prince? It was actually one of this Durin's descendants in the books, but again, this series does seem to be condensing the timelines.

What did you guys make of episode 5 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? How do you feel about this slightly revamped origin for the Balrog of Moria? Drop us a comment down below.

This show desperately needs to pick up the pace.

@BreakTheCode - Next episode promises some battles but I agree, they are dragging way too much.

@BreakTheCode - just a whole bunch of "we should do something" "should we do something?"

They aren't even trying to adapt the lore. Numenor can't hardly muster 3 ships with 500 volunteers LOL?!?! Mithrils made of the light of Silmarils?!?!

Could it be any more obvious that Galadriel is a moron in this series and she is bringing Sauron directly back to his Southland throne, aka Mordor?!?!?!

@McMurdo - they don’t own the rights to a lot of stuff. Only thing they have is stuff mention in Lord of the Rings books and whatever they make up. It’s the reason Shadow of Mordor series is all made up.

@TheSuperMex - all of what's in Akallabeth is in the appendices. So the "they don't own it" excuse is nonsense. And that is no reason for Numenor to not have a thriving Navy and military

@McMurdo - on top of that, if rights were an issue, they could've just made up a completely different IP, then did whatever the f@#$ they wanted to do with the lore without having to worry about rights.

It's ridiculous the lengths people will go to in order to defend crappy writing choices.

@TheSuperMex - But here’s the thing, though. The Lord of the Rings itself (not the Appendices that is) includes a lot of references back to the Second Age. Enough to tell a better story than this.

@Origame - As soon as they weren’t given the rights to the Silmarillion and the other books, they should have changed course and done an adaptation of the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. It’s been 20+ years, and a premium TV series could actually be better for telling much more of the story. If they wanted to, they could have even started with The Hobbit.

But of course, the real issue is that they have bad writers who wanted to check certain boxes for telling this story.

@DerekLake - no, the real issue is the calculated and targeted destruction of Tolkiens work.

@Origame - it's insane. I've heard every excuse in the book at this point.

@DerekLake - so many references. They have a ton to work with, they simply aren't utilizing it because they wanna tell their story.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 9/24/2022, 10:29 AM
@DerekLake - it woulda failed even worse. Trying to outdo PJs trilogy even in long form series would fail. Because you'd have no means of deflecting why you aren't attempting to accurately adapt the lore and story.

@McMurdo - wouldn't be surprised if 99% of users here are bots for these companies.

@McMurdo - You’re right. With their approach, it certainly would have failed as it has. But it still would have been better for them to adapt LOTR more accurately in this format than trying to cobble together a prequel series from supplemental material that still has to measure up to Jackson’s trilogy and just ends up trying to copy similar beats anyway.

I don't mind them throwing that in this show as well. It's an adaptation, so it doesn't have to follow established lore to the beat. As long as it's got rhythm

That Mithril/Silmaril thing is the biggest nonsense I've ever heard.
I hope Elrond was right and this nothing more just a legend.

"Will "Durin's Bane" earn his moniker this season by putting an end to the fan-favorite Dwarf prince?"
You mean Durin VI, not Durin IV.
