The first reviews for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power started finding their way online earlier this week, and that means the Prime Video series has an all-important Rotten Tomatoes score. 

Like those of you watching today, critics have only seen the first two instalments of the series, but they were impressed enough for the show to debut on the review aggregator with 83%. This score will obviously change in the coming weeks as more verdicts are added, though it's a percentage that bodes well for The Rings of Power's success.

While the series is a prequel to that original trilogy, its only real connection to Peter Jackson's movies is that both stories are based on the work of J. R. R. Tolkien.

That big screen era of storytelling set in Middle-earth has clearly heavily inspired The Rings of Power, though, something that's evident from the decision to shoot the action in New Zealand (controversially, season 2 will move to the UK for what we can only imagine will be a very different story). 

With that in mind, how does this TV series compare to the movies in terms of its critical reception? Below is a closer look at where it stands compared to both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies:

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies - 59%
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - 64%
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - 74%
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - 83%
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - 91%
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - 93%
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - 95%

So, it's sandwiched right between the two trilogies, making it better than those hit-and-miss prequels, but perhaps not quite as good as Jackson's original visit to Middle-earth. Needless to say, it's going to be very interesting to see what the response is from hardcore fans over the coming days as they're the ones who will make or break the series.

The Two Towers has the highest scores? Didn't expect that, but that might also be because I'd put it below Fellowship myself.

Anyway, as for this show that's a pretty solid score. Obviously it doesn't matter since only woke reviewers got to see it so Amazon can puts it's narrative on us even more obviously.

@bkmeijer1 - There was really nothing “woke” or whatever that even means these days being pushed in your face with this show. It really just feels like a return to a Middle-earth almost identical to the one in the movies.

@bkmeijer1 - I can't decide which is better IMO. Probably RoTK cause it was the epicest.

As a Tolkien lover I really hope this show is good. Forget the woke/non woke crap, my concern is major deviations.

@Fogs - I do like the world of Tolkien, but I'm not a lore buff by ay standards. The only concern I had was the look of the show.

Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones shaped my idea of ehat fantasy looks like, and since this looked different I had some concerns. Haven't watched the first two episodes yet, so don't know about that yet.

People are judging this on the first two episodes, which I heard are good then it turns to shit afterwards.

@PlusUltra - Leaks online, not sure if they've viewed episodes but someone has leaked what happens that worked on the show.

I think that red shit you see in the trailer is in the first two episodes setting things up then pretty much everything else you see in the trailers is what follows.

The first two episodes were excellent, and far exceeded any expectations I had. Easily the most cinematic a TV show has looked or felt. If this is an indication of the quality to come, we could be looking at a new all-time great.

The CGI hair on the snow troll was impressive! Makes me wish Marvel would give their artists more time! Or since we live in a post-Lucas-tinkering world as well as a streaming world, do some dlc on the effects and tighten it up. Release it later

Means nothing really. As someone else on this site pointed out, there’s plenty of [fri]ckery that goes on when reviewing shows on RT since they’re usually based on the first couple of episodes. Disney got wise and did this with the Disney+ shows, critics been gaming the system for a while now.

To me this is equally valid as those “overwhelmingly positive Twitter reactions” articles.

Pre fan fiction. Galadriel isn't anything like Galadriel. Gil Galad sending elves to the West on what [frick]ing authority. Dwarves are all goofy comic relief. Finrod is some cringy white guy with a Great Clips hair cut. "I wont always be here to tell you whats right and wrong Galadriel" ummmm dude your immortal and you have zero inkling Morgoth is coming to rape your trees??? You literally don't even have a word for death so why would you tell your sister you wouldnt be there always???????? Bad bad writing. Remember how much effort it took the entire Fellowship to kill one cave troll in Moria???? Here Galadriel just goes all MCU on their asses. THEY START THE SHOW WITH GALADRIEL GETTING BULLIED LMFAO. THIS WOULD NEVER EVER HAPPEN.


WORST of all Gil Galad is literally Galadriels great nephew. He would never treat her in such a way nor would Elrond.


PeterJackson made changes too but they are MINISCULE compared to this show and clearly he and his wife who wrote the trilogy respected and were passionate about Tolkien.





Similar to the Star Wars sequel trilogy making people go back and rethink their appreciation of the prequels, this will make people reevaluate the Hobbit films. Yikes.

I prefer the Powerful/Charming/Manipulative/Powerful Galadriel of LOTR than this angsty wtver is Galadriel…

I like Elrond.

The rest of the characters are fine wtver… there’s no love at first sight like Aragorn/Gandalf/Frodo character types…

Also the man that fell from the sky is most proplbably Saruman..

Bref.. it’s a okay show with very good CGI..7.5/10

it’s definitly not better than LOTR.

@RevanOfKrypton - REALLY better not be. The Istari show up much later in the chronology and sail in as a group of five emissaries sent directly from Manwe AFTER the forging of the rings. Cirdan gifts Gandalf his ring upon their arrival from Valinor onto Middle Earth which means he built the Grey Havens using the power of the already forged rings ala how Galadriel built Lotien and Elrond built Rivendell
