THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER Reviews Promise An "Astounding" Return To Middle Earth

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to premiere on Friday, and following the recent social media reactions, critics are now allowed to share more in-depth thoughts on the first two episodes of the Prime Video series.

For the most part, the first wave of reviews have been very positive indeed. The show is being hailed as a triumphant return to Middle Earth, and, for better or worse, it sounds like the setting is very much in-keeping with the world Peter Jackson established in his beloved LOTR films.

This news is sure to be welcomed by fans of the trilogy, but those hoping for a slightly different take on Tolkien's immersive fantasy tales might be disappointed.

The Rings of Power currently sits at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, and while there are only a handful of outright negative reviews, there have been a few recurring criticisms. The script is said to be somewhat clunky at times, and it sounds like viewers might find certain characters in the sprawling ensemble more compelling than others.

Check out the full reviews at the links below, along with a new critics TV spot highlighting some of the praise.

I didn't get a chance to write a review, but I very much enjoyed the first two episodes.

Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power stars Morfydd Clark, Benjamin Walker, Charles Edwards, Charlie Vickers, Markella Kavenagh, Nazanin Boniadi, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Tyroe Muhafidin, Maxim Baldry, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Leon Wadham, Daniel Weyman, and Sara Zwangobani.

@TheJackAss - That is pretty funny, lol.

But I don't think its ignoring the critism in general.

"and while there are only a handful of outright negative reviews, there have been a few recurring criticisms. The script is said to be somewhat clunky at times, and it sounds like viewers might find certain characters in the sprawling ensemble more compelling than others."

The reviews so far out of nearly 150 official ones is mostly positive.. can't really ignore that. But I guess you're still of the mind only the 'woke leftist' will praise it.

TheSuerJackAss - 9/1/2022, 8:46 AM
@UniqNo - Literally only the woke leftist saw it early. So yeah blame Amazon for this narrative
Conquistador
Conquistador - 9/1/2022, 8:49 AM
@TheJackAss - As far as I'm concerned, that's an opinion. Unless you've vetted every single one of those reviews/reviewers your claims are unsubstantiated. But I get it, this show isn't for you. I'll be checking it out.

I've wasted time of worse things.
TheSuerJackAss
TheSuerJackAss - 9/1/2022, 8:51 AM
@UniqNo - All reviews are opinions at the end of the day. Both sides on any aisle just focus on what narrative they love
TheSuerJackAss
TheSuerJackAss - 9/1/2022, 8:51 AM
@UniqNo - Why does negative reviews gotta be vetted over positive ones ? We are both cherry picking here

@RorMachine - I also said that because not even people like @UniqNo read the article or he would have ALSO noticed that review. But it does seem EW changed the headline after initially publishing it lol
TheSuerJackAss
TheSuerJackAss - 9/1/2022, 9:02 AM
@RorMachine - Also the Jeff Bezos owned The Washington Post review being positive should surprise no one there
Conquistador
Conquistador - 9/1/2022, 9:05 AM
@TheJackAss - No, negative reviews are good to have and like you said its another opinion/perspective but also from a credible source who understand media content... but you're basically saying that the left are the only ones able to have their voice heard. How are you so sure none of those "positive" reviews are from people who support the right? Why you need to put everyone in a box as 'woke' if they like something.
TheSuerJackAss
TheSuerJackAss - 9/1/2022, 9:06 AM
@UniqNo - Go look at just the early reactions. I am talking the media that saw the two episodes early. Find a Republican

@TheJackAss - I read the article bro, I even copied in some of the text in another response. I just never clicked on the hyperlink as it didn't seem "amusingly negative" as you put it.

@UniqNo - The very last line alone was awful

Conquistador - 9/1/2022, 9:13 AM
@TheJackAss - Like I said, I don't trust early reactions normally, still of thr sting of BvS, but you telling me "go find a Republican" is the same as me telling you "point out to me all the left/Democrats from those positive ones????

Eh I've wasted enough time. You're entitled to your opinion.

Conquistador - 9/1/2022, 9:25 AM
@TheJackAss - As far as I see you're just mouthing off without proving you've done the work yourself. You post a negative review out of a few and claim it represents everyone who's not woke, you've not (or shown that you have) looked at both side of what arguement it is you trying push.

I'm not here to prove you wrong, you seem to be doing that ok yourself, I'm simply asking for your evidence to back that all up. I'm not saying I'm right.

Ok, I'll make it more simple for you..

If I enjoy the show, does that make me a leftist? If so, then how?
TheSuerJackAss
TheSuerJackAss - 9/1/2022, 9:27 AM
@UniqNo - I NEVER said liking the show makes you a leftist. But when you have the same people liking the same type off that the general audience hates. its very easy noticing whos who.
TheSuerJackAss
TheSuerJackAss - 9/1/2022, 9:30 AM
@UniqNo - For example this site alone by default will always praise the M She U & pretty much anything made by Disney. There are usual suspects that will just do what they do. I will say though that Grace Randolphs opinions on the first two episodes surprised me. I am almost expecting that the lines of John Campea will love the [frick] out of this show

Here allow me to help balance out your one-sided article:

“ Amazon has gotten its money’s worth in production values but not storytelling, with a handsome prequel that could leave all but the most devoted Hobbits feeling more bored than lord.” - Brian Lowrey CNN

“ This series is a special catastrophe of ruined potential, sacrificing a glorious universe's limitless possibilities at the altar of tried-and-true blockbuster desperation.” - Entertainment Weekly

And my favorite from the UK Dailymail

“ This is a disaster dragon – plucked, spatchcocked, with a tankerload of Paxo stuffed up its fundament, roasted and served with soggy sprouts.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power (Amazon Prime) is so staggeringly bad, it's hilarious. Everything about it is ill-judged to a spectacular extreme.

The cliche-laden script, the dire acting, the leaden pace, the sheer inconsistency and confusion as it lurches between styles – where do we start?”

@TyrantBossMedia - As a non-Britt, that Daily Mail review contained too many British slang terms for me to understand at all. I knew the reviewer didn’t like the show, and then I just heard a bunch of crazy backwoods British terms.
