This Christmas, The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson presents a groundbreaking journey back to Middle-earth through the eyes of award-winning filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama.

In The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, an original anime feature being released in theaters by New Line Cinema, we'll return to Middle-earth, the iconic world previously brought to life in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, based on the revered books by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Under the direction of Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus), it's been confirmed today that the impressive voice cast is led by Brian Cox (Succession) as Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan; Gaia Wise (A Walk in the Woods) as his daughter Héra; and Luke Pasqualino (Snowpiercer) as Wulf.

Miranda Otto, who delivered an unforgettable, award-winning performance in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, reprises her role as Éowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan, who serves as the tale’s narrator.

The voice ensemble also includes Lorraine Ashbourne (Bridgerton), Yazdan Qafouri (I Came By), Benjamin Wainwright (World on Fire), Laurence Ubong Williams (Gateway), Shaun Dooley (The Witcher), Michael Wildman (Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), Jude Akuwudike (Beasts of No Nation), Bilal Hasna (Sparks) and Janine Duvitski (Benidorm).

You can watch The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim trailer below (via SFFGazette.com).

Here's the newly released plot synopsis for The War of the Rohirrim:

Set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, 'The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim' tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg— a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.

With Kamiyama at the helm, the movie is being produced by Oscar winner Philippa Boyens, from the screenwriting team behind The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, alongside Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou, who, in addition to their many separate animation projects, collaborated on the Blade Runner: Black Lotus series.

The executive producers are Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson, Sam Register, Carolyn Blackwood and Toby Emmerich. The screenplay is by Jeffrey Addiss & Will Matthews and Phoebe Gittins & Arty Papageorgiou, story by Addiss & Matthews and Boyens, based on characters created by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The team of creative collaborators returning from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy also includes Oscar winners Alan Lee and Richard Taylor, along with esteemed Tolkien illustrator John Howe.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim arrives in theaters nationwide on December 13, and internationally beginning December 11.

Seems like a very generic story that most people wouldn't give a sh1t for if it wasn't under the Lord of the rings IP and it's seems the marketing team knew that so they threw in those live action shots.

@HashTagSwagg - omg, it's just a generic girl boss movie disguised as TLOTR.... very very disappointing.

@TheVandalore - I hope it's not that but if those leaks are true, it's exactly that.

@TheVandalore - her character appeared in the books. This story was in the book. All that it is stated that helm killed froas or whatever and a war erupted. This is about the shield maidens of Ronan.

@Mrnorth1921 - I'm aware. I haven't read anything but I play Lord of the Rings Online religiously every day, and I've watched what feels like millions of lore videos on YouTube about all of Tolkiens works from the Silmarillion to the Rings and all off the off shoot tales he wrote and notes and letters to his various editors and fans and other people where he discussed his works in greater detail. I am by no means an expert on Tolkien, not even close... I've dipped my foot in the ocean that is the lore. But some of those videos I've watched have been on the subject of this new movie, so I have a bit of an idea while trying to keep myself spoiler free for the most part.

Anyways, all that to say... This still feels like a generic girl boss movie set only by the vibe of this trailer.

Funnily enough, Rohan and the lvl 60-80 area of Lord of the Rings Online is my favorite part of the whole game, with some of my favorite story arcs and areas to explore and farm, and some of the soundtracks best bangers are in Rohan. That's also where you get your War-steed in the Wold, and Rohan has some of the best quests in the game. I've been anticipating the War of the Rohirrim and hoping it would be better than S1 of Rings of Power, but this looks like lore girl boss Galadriel action. I grew up with Ripley in Alien and Seline in Underworld, I love a good bad ass protagonist who is a woman... I don't like girl boss pandering. It's become easy at this point to spot the difference a mile away.

@TheRogue - hera is a real Tolkien character at least. They're expanding her role.... I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt considering Richard Taylor head of Weta, John Howe and Alan Lee directly involved....i thought the trailer was pretty great.

@McMurdo - LOTRO is honestly a mixed bag. There is a dedicated and faithful fan base who have been actively keeping it alive for 17 while the devs have crafted the game as a love letter to Tolkien fanatics. Most of the people who play the game simply love spending time in Middle-Earth, and the game is truly breathtaking in how fully they have realized the world in the 17 years of development. Literally every location in the books and movies are in the game and explorable. People do pub crawls to all the iconic pubs, and retrace the Fellowships actual journey from the Shire to Mordor. The game itself is unlike any MMORPG I've played with how much respect for the IP they show.

?si=DEdG0eEBPGWHOKLT

You need not watch the whole long video, but this gives a glimpse at the massive world they've built.

The downside, however, is the game is free to play but extremely expensive to play right. Since it has been around for 17 years, there is a lot of content hidden behind pay walls and tons of basic game features purposely locked in the LOTRO STORE. The cool thing is the game actually makes it pretty easy to earn LOTRO STORE currency in game by simply completing deeds, and you complete deeds regularly just playing. So theoretically, you can unlock EVERYTHING for free by only playing the game... And if you have been playing for 17 years theoretically you could buy everything in game. Most people don't have that kinda time or desire to farm deeds, so most people end up spending several hundreds on this game after a while.

Most of the people who play LOTRO religiously have spent way more than they care to admit supporting the game, so to speak. The game can be a money pit. And the endgame isn't really competitive or high profile like you expect from most MMORPGS. If I'm to be honest, LOTRO is almost a cozy MMORPG. A lot of the events have really frilly cosmetics rather than bad ass armours and weapons. It's more so a bunch of hobbits running around smoking pipe weed listening to bard concerts and telling jokes. Your average daily LOTRO player has grey hair and grand kids, but that's kinda the charm lol

It's a weird community but I really dig it.

@Malatrova15 - okay, fair enough. The Hobbit is a short read. But I wasn't speaking in reference to that tiny blip of the Tolkien lore. And I know it's the cool hip thing to rag on "Tolkien experts' because it's so much cooler to be in the "I've actually read the thing" Club... But how you gonna talk shit about YouTube folks discussing lore like you're some expert when you've only read the Hobbit? You've simply regurgitated some edgy shit you heard someone say about Tolkien experts, just to give me shit... Lol

Sorry if I'm not buying what you are pushing, pal.

@Mrnorth1921 - I'm glad you like what you see. I'm not in the same boat, but people want different things from different things. Hope you enjoy it when it drops. Hell, I hope I enjoy it when it drops too! 😄

@TheRogue - girl boss stuff is when a story is crafted specifically to be a vehicle for a woman to perform feats of magnificence far beyond the boundaries of balanced story telling, so much as to highlight the preposterous nature of those feats to a degree it becomes comically distracting from the submersions of the tale which is often attempting to remain serious in tone. There is a way to balance a bad ass woman protagonist and it has been done successfully many times. But a perfect modern example of girl boss writing is Galadriel in the Rings of Power. Every episode being a tutorial on how not to write a protagonist. From the few shots shown of our protagonist, I only got Galadriel girl bossing the ice troll vibes.

I hope you understand my meaning. I'm not being obtuse about women in roles of authority or some random shit, I'm just seeing what the trailer highlighted for her in the trailer.

@HashTagSwagg - Was going to say the same thing!

Very generic, and the constant shots of the films and even the audio clip from the movies makes it feel like the producers think we’re idiots; or they have no confidence in it.

Which is crazy since there’s so much Tolkien material not tapped into yet! Why in Iluvitar’s name do they keep struggling to write lame tropes when there’s a wealth of original material sitting right there. This could’ve been a Children Of Hurin anime. Or, if they can’t use older works; could’ve written it to better match the world.

That looks fun , I’ll check it out!!.

However while it being given a theatrical release shows the faith New Line & co might have in it , I sadly don’t think it will do that well if at all considering it’s anime inspiration which is still somewhat niche in the U.S atleast.

Also this seems to catered moreso towards families or even adults which sadly doesn’t sell that well since animation is looked down upon as a kids medium.

I hope I’m wrong though and it’s both well received aswell as successful!!.

Also I haven't been around much so was there ever a story posted about Amazon's secret level series coming out? This looks amazing!
