Editorial: Actors that could play John Stewart/Green Lantern in the DCCU

Who should play John Stewart? Common - who managed to win the role in 2007 - is out of the running and Tyrese Gibson is publicly campaigning for the role, while nothing is being said about fan favorites Omari Hardwick and Nate Parker. But are there better choices out there? Here are my top picks.

In less than a week its time for Comic-Con once again and this year is special. Not only is Marvel sitting this one out, but DC is expected to really bring the heat this year with rumored new footage from BvS, a first look at Suicide Squad and perhaps some information on Justice League: Part 1. People are also speculating that DC/WB might be revealing which actor(s) they have picked to play Green Lantern. Fans are somewhat divided as far as which GL they want to see on screen next, after Ryan Reynolds' Hal bombed and the debated lack of prominent non-white characters in CBM's.
Chris Pine - among others - have been rumored to be the next actor to get a chance to play the fearless pilot turned hero. However, recent rumors claimed there would be at least two GL's present at the same time in the DCCU, with Hal Jordan being one, and John Stewart being the other. Recently Tyrese Gibson has been heavily and publicly campaigning for the role, but personally I would prefer if DC/WB went with someone else for the role.

When I think of John Stewart I think of a rather tall, muscular, proud black man with a very compelling and powerful voice, which is why I would like our John Stewart to be preferably at least 6', have a darker complexion (since most black characters in the DCCU have been rather light-skinned) and a voice that demands respect.

Here are my top choices:

Idris Elba

Pros:
Acting ability
Height
Voice

Cons:
Marvel Contract
Age

Idris Elba is the perfect choice, hands down. He’s a great actor who’s currently being underutilized by Marvel. If he’s able and willing to leave Marvel he is the John Stewart we need, and the John Stewart we deserve. At 6'2.75", Elba won't look out out place next to Affleck, Momoa, Johnson, Fisher and Cavill. He also has a voice that will make men sound like boys and women drop their panties. The Brit is turning 43 later this year but personally I’ve always pictured John Stewart to be in his late 30s/early 40s. Don’t let his age stop you WB - steal him now!

Terry Crews

Pros:
Height
Size
Voice

Cons:
Questionable acting abilities
Age

Terry Crews deserved to be Luke Cage. But Marvel chose someone else and that means their loss could be DC’s gain. He might be turning 47 this year but I think we’re safe to assume that Crews is going to stay in shape for years to come and at 6’2.5”, he’ll fit right in with the rest of the JL members. Plus, much like Stewart is in the comics, Crews is from Michigan. Although, the big question remains: is he a good enough actor to play Stewart?

Rob Brown

Pros:
Age
Height
Acting abilities

Cons:
Voice
Physique

At 31, Rob Brown is one of the youngest names on my list. At 6’1”, he’s also tall enough to fit right in with the likes of Cavill, Gadot and Miller, without rising as tall as Momoa and Affleck. He’s also proven himself a capable actor in movies such as Coach Carter, Finding Forrester and The Express. Plus, he also had a brief role in the Dark Knight Rises, so WB knows he exists. However, Brown lacks the powerful voice I think John Stewart needs and he needs to put some hours in at the gym before being ready to don the green ring.

Michael Ealy

Pros:
Acting abilities
Physique

Cons:
Height
Age
Voice

Standing at 5’10” Michael Ealy is the shortest guy on my list. I’ve previously stated that I want John Stewart to be at least 6’, but with the Tyrese Gibson rumors I figured if we’re going to have JS be one of the shorter members, we might as well have a better actor than Gibson portraying him. Ealy is turning 42 this year, but if the height isn’t an issue, I don’t see his age being one either. But, like Brown, Ealy lacks that truly compelling voice I picture John Stewart with.

Michael Jai White

Pros:
Physique
Height
Voice

Cons:
Questionable acting abilities
Age

Michael Jai White would have been almost as perfect as Elba for the role if he could act half as good as the Brit. He’s 6’0”, ripped and has a powerful voice. But his acting really is hit or miss, with significantly more misses. But, with the right director, I would remain open to the idea. Unfortunately, Jai White turns 48 this year and is the oldest name on my list. Perhaps his performance in The Dark Knight and as the Bronze Tiger in DC’s TV-universe has been good enough for DC to trust him with John Stewart, despite his age.

Charles Michael Davis

Pros:
Age
Height

Cons:
Inexperienced in Movies

At 30 years old, Davis is the youngest name on my list and the most inexperienced one. Sure, he’s had several recurring roles on various TV Shows and starred in a couple TV movies but has never appeared in any major productions. However, he has put in solid performances in both Grey’s Anatomy and The Originals, so perhaps his big break is just around the corner.

Damon Wayans Jr.

Pros:
Age
Height
Acting

Cons:
Voice
Inexperience
Previous involvement with Marvel

If Wayans signed on to play John Stewart he would be the second member of the Wayans family to land a role in a DC movie adaption, after his uncle Marlon landed the role of Robin in Tim Burton’s purposed third Batman film. For better or worse, that movie never got made so perhaps it’s time for another Wayans to get a shot. At 32, while filling out a reasonably fit 6’1” frame, Wayans definitely fits the physical requirements (although, a Snyder-workout wouldn’t hurt). The main cause of concern when it comes to Wayans is his acting. He’s a great comedic actor but is untested in more serious waters. Portraying John Stewart would give him a chance to prove that he is more than just another Wayans.

Trai Byers

Pros:
Height
Physique
Age
Voice

Cons:
Untested as a lead

I only had to watch one episode of Empire to see that Byers would be a great choice for John Stewart. At 32, he’s still young without looking too young, plus he’s also big enough with a 6’1.5” muscular frame. His voice might not be as powerful as for example Elba’s, but it can still be compelling. Also, with movies like Selma and Americons under his belt, along with Empire being a hit on TV, Byers sure is a star on the rise. Snag him before it’s too late, WB.

@TheEpicJuiceBox I didn't include Elba to be original. I included him because he's perfect for JS and because he perfectly fits my description of how I want JS to be. He is perfect for JS.

@ImKennyPowers oh yes, Happy Endings was great. I want to believe that Wayans Jr actually knows how to act and is not just goofing around like some of his family members. He's kind of an odd choice but if he put some hours in at the gym, I think he might be able to do John Stewart justice.

Seriously? You seriously wrote that the actor needed to have a darker complexion? Really? So, Tyrese isn't black enough? Really? You really wrote that, and you don't see a problem with it? Smh.........

Lhornbk - 7/4/2015, 2:23 PM
Oh, and Elba won't be Stewart. I would be willing to bet money that his contract with Marvel makes that impossible. Plus, frankly, I would rather have someone who wants to play the role. Give it to Tyrese.

Honestly ... John Stewart is one of the hardest characters to cast that I can think of. He's right up there with WW and Superman in terms of how many rare and specific traits that one actor needs.
CombatWombat
CombatWombat - 7/4/2015, 2:33 PM
John Stewart needs to be
-black
-handsome (but not too handsome)
-badass
-commanding presence
-likable (but not too likable)
-intelligent
-square jaw
-right physique
-tall (but not too tall)

I mean, you did a good job with this list. I can honestly see any of these guys playing the character in a pinch. My choice would probably be Michael Jai White, though...

Terry Crews or Trai Byers based on looks alone

and what about Trevor Noah? he'd make a fine Jon Stewart.

@Lhornbk I never said Tyrese wasn't dark enough. And I also never said that the actor needed to have a darker complexion, I said that personally I would prefer if the actor that lands the role has more of a darker complexion, since the other black actors portraying prominent characters in the DCCU - Lennix and Fisher - is light-skinned. And personally I would prefer if not every black dude in the DCCU was light-skinned, since that makes the whole thing feel extremely whitewashed.

@CombatWombat like I said, Michael Jai White would be perfect if he could act half as good as Idris Elba.

If someone can get Crews to put on the performance of a lifetime, he would be my first pick, but otherwise I think Byers is my favorite. He's pretty young, too.

@tucks I love Trevor Noah, but I only know him as a comedian, not an actor.

@dellamorte1872 exactly. I usually don't have a problem with race-changing, but some characters more or less has to be a certain race: Black Panther, John Stewart and Thor for example.

Idris Elba, Nate Parker, or Andre Holland would be my choices. All great actors who can easily portray the integrity of Stewart.

I think Crews is doing great work on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He would be a decent fit in a Green Lantern Corps movie, but if it's Stewart alone, I don't think he should do it.

Yeah I like to think Damon Wayans Jr. is more than a comedic actor, but he's unproven at this point. As much as I love Wayans Jr. and I've been opposed to Tyrese, I like Tyrese for John Stewart more than Wayans Jr.

Idk if you saw the other John Stewart posts, I'd mentioned Nate Parker. I've only seen him in Non-Stop, so I can't speak too confidently about him as a lead or co-lead if they go the interstellar "buddy cop" approach. However, he was solid in his smaller role in Non-Stop, he's received critics praise & awards, is an up-and-coming actor and he definitely looks the part.

He was an All-American wrestler his senior year at Oklahoma, so you know he's athletic and likely could handle physical demand of doing his own stunts. Of course, another "con" for him might be his height, but like Cavill's Superman, being physically larger can compensate for lack of height.

Terry Crews has been great on Brooklyn 99!!

And he showed he can be a good villain in Gamer. With his superhero physique & ability to play a hero, villain or anti-hero/villain, it's gotta be a matter of time before he is cast in a superhero movie/show. I'm honestly surprised he wasn't cast as Luke Cage. Maybe because of his age, 46, and/or schedule conflicts with Brooklyn 9-9. I wanted him to be King Shark until I learned he almost drowned during a military-style reality show, so I'm not sure he'd be a good fit for an Aquaman villain.

Nice Article! Solid suggestions. At first, Wayans caught me off guard, but then I warmed up to the idea. I could see it. I especially like the Crews casting if he can learn to act without the "jazz hands". He does a great job in 99, but even back when he was in Everybody Hates Chris, his obsessive hand movements drove/ drives me nuts. Enjoyed the read.

@Ignition @ImKennyPowers @Vaughan007

I'm completely unfamiliar with Holland, even though I've seen Selma. Looks the part at least.

Like I've said before, I think Parker would be great, but I am a bit concerned about his height. It's not just that he would be a lot shorter than most of the other JL members, he would be the shortest of them all as he is even shorter than both Gadot and Miller. I'd much rather have Parker than Tyrese though.

And yeah, Crews works better as a part of an ensemble. I have a hard time seeing him be solid enough to be the lead, which is a shame since he's otherwise perfect. Despite this, I much rather have him playing JS than having Tyrese do it.

It should be noted that I do like Tyrese, but I don't want him playing JS because he's just not solid enough.

Wayans is a bit of a left field choice, but I could see it. He's such a talented comedic actor, but I'm confident he could handle it. Even Marlon Wayans managed to do it once or twice.

Cavill is only 6'1." He'd need even higher heels for Elba and Crews.

No mention of Taye Digs? That guy is great! Did you see the series "Daybreak?" It was one season too short!
