MAD MEN Star Jon Hamm Reflects On Pitching Role To Marvel And Confirms He Turned Down GREEN LANTERN

Mad Men and Top Gun: Maverick star Jon Hamm's name has been associated with many superhero projects over the years, though he's yet to sign up to star in one.

For a time, it looked like he might play the X-Men Universe's Mister Sinister back when 20th Century Fox was in charge of the franchise and teasing Nathaniel Essex's long-awaited live-action debut. That never happened, though it felt like something had been in the works for Hamm to eventually play the villain.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Hamm was asked if he's passed on many comic book movies over the years.

"Yeah. And it’s not like they were saying, 'We want you to be Iron Man,'" the actor explained. "But there were a lot of conversations, and I’m still in those. I talk to the guys that run Marvel and DC. And I’m a comic book nerd. So, we’ll see. Even that part of the industry is changing."

So, the door isn't closed and, while elaborating on that point, Hamm confirmed he passed on suiting up as DC's Green Lantern. "That was one I definitely didn’t want to do," he admitted. "But I’ve pitched myself for a couple parts of the Marvel universe, I don’t want to say what exactly, but it was a part of a comic book that I really liked."

"I was like, 'Are you going to do this story?' And they were like, 'Yeah, we’re actually thinking of that.' I go, 'Good. I should be the guy.' So maybe it’ll work out."

"But I look at a guy like Jeff Goldblum’s career - and I know Jeff a bit, we used to have the same therapist - and I’m just like, 'God, how awesome to be able to do all the things he’s done.' He had his leading man phase, and he does Marvel and he’ll just roll through and steal the scene, and then he’s doing commercials and he’s funny as shit. I see him out and he’s happy."

"So, consciously or not, I’m modeling my life to be that: varied and happy and fulfilled," Hamm concluded.

It's become rare to see an actor, particularly one of Hamm's standing, express such enthusiasm for a superhero role. However, providing it's not Hal Jordan, it seems he's ready and willing to sign up with Marvel Studios or the newly launched DC Studios.

We're sure many of you are curious to learn what the role he's pitched is and, based on a 2022 conversation we had with Hamm, it's almost certainly Mister Sinister.

"Sometimes I find out more about my career from the internet than I actually find out from my agents," he started. "So, I didn't really know that was in the works until somebody told me that I didn't get it or it didn't happen."

"I really don't know. Like anybody else, I would be thrilled to be part of that storytelling having been a big comic book fan throughout my early teens and early twenties," Hamm said of Mister Sinister potentially crossing his radar again. "So, we'll see. I don't know. It would be a fun person to play, that's for sure. I look good in purple, I'll put it that way."

Bullet dodged with Green Lantern I'll say that.

@Spoken - If only they had made the movie like TAS was. What a missed opportunity. It should have been the Star Wars of DC.

@Odekahn - It's just WB being some motherf#cker always trying to ice-skate up hill.

I really wanted Hamm for the Naked Gun reboot, I thought he would have been a perfect successor to Leslie Nielsen.. not Liam Neeson. Hamm can handle dry humor

@bobevanz - Hamm was great in Confess Fletch. I'd love to see more of that.

Mr Sinister, White Nick Fury (please, it's just a way to describe the character), Cable, Magneto, Terrax, Firelord. Just to name a few characters he would be perfect for..

@TheRedLeader - I could maybe seehim as Sinister or Magneto even though he would have not been my first choice.

Like him for Cable though if we don’t get Brolin back.

@TheRedLeader - white nick fury or magneto. he'd be better as a character with less makeup and cgi. sandman would be cool though with cgi

I like Hamm a lot. His role in Baby Driver was fantastic and made me want to see him in more roles as the villain

I'm starting to believe the Green Lantern character is cursed or something, So many actors turned down the role

@PaKent - There's a weird dichotomy between how weird and unusual the premise and franchise is versus the tone of said franchise.

On one hand, you have someone whose superpower is to make stuff up, creating giant green jackhammers to split dams or giant green crowbars to open big crates, and whose weakness has historically been yellow. His close friend is a big pig faced dude and there are talking squirrels and stuff.

But it's also DEAD SERIOUS. It's not treated like Gunn's Guardians; it's treated like serious space opera meets serious cop drama. The fans of GL are generally fans of hard sci-fi, not silly lighthearted Hitchhiker's Guide, but on paper, that's what Green Lantern is closer to.

I think that's why Hollywood always wanted it to be some comedy, like the infamous Jack Black version, and why I think Guy Gardner resonates a lot. A jerk who doesn't know he's a jerk fits the premise more than the straight laced Hal Jordan, but he's still serious enough that he doesn't make a joke OF the premise.

I can’t really see him as Hal so I’m glad he turned it down aside from the quality in hindsight…

He could have made a good Superman or Batman when younger but how about Harvey Dent/Two Face or Wildcat now?.

And if Green Lantern had been a good movie that made over a billion and spawned many sequels like it had the potential too, he'd be kicking himself for turning it down.

But he's a follower like the rest of the actors and can't see any value in the character since it is cool to shit on the character because the movie bombed rather than blaming the film itself. Ryan Reynolds just adds oil to the fire, like Clooney, he can't just let it go and not put it down, except everyone knows Batman can he good because Batman has had other movies.

Seriously jonesing for a ham and cheese right now.

I've always enjoyed his work. Especially his interactions with Conan O' Brien.

Dude would be perfect for Sinister, especially with how good he can be with comedy.

I keep on saying, John Hamm would make an awesome Dr. Will Magnus if DC ever decides to adapt The Metal Men.
