Before James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired to take charge of DC Studios, a Green Lantern TV series was in the works revolving around Guy Gardner and Alan Scott.

The story was set to play out across two different time periods, deepening Lantern lore. However, while it was heading to Max, we expected it to be more in line with Titans and Doom Patrol rather than a big budget superhero series akin to those seen on Disney+, for example.

There was chatter about it tying into the planned Green Lantern Corps movie, though, and an impressive cast started coming together with Finn Wittrock tapped as Guy and Jeremy Irvine set to play Alan.

Now, Wittrock - best known for American Horror Story and All My Children - has broken his silence on being ousted from the role when DC Studios set out to reboot the DCEU as the DCU.

"I had like 20 Green Lantern comics sitting in my closet. I was starting to read the comics, my five-year-old son, would find the comics and be like 'Dad, what's this?' And I was like, 'Research from a project that never was.' But yeah, it gave me a great education, into Green Lantern already. And now, I'm kind of hooked on to the story."

"So, it was definitely, I won't say it didn't sting to find out the news that it wasn't happening," he continued. "But, I think it was nice because I got to realize what I would need to do to prepare for a role like that. So, hopefully, some other comic book role will, the one that's supposed to be, will come my way. And then at least like have some kind of heads up about how to enter that world."

Asked if he planned to rock Guy's signature look in the show, Wittrock said, "Well, I knew, I knew the fans wouldn't forgive me if I didn't have the red hair and the bow cut. So, yeah, I was preparing, I was mentally preparing. Not physically. I was gonna wait till the last possible second for that. But uh yeah, that to happen, you know."

A new Guy has already been cast in the form of Gunn's longtime friend, The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Nathan Fillion. He's set to appear in SUPERMAN and will likely reprise the role in Lanterns alongside whoever plays Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

It's a shame Wittrock missed out, but Gunn recently chimed in on that to say, "Finn's a talented guy and he'll be okay."

Are you disappointed this Green Lantern TV series was scrapped?

Idris Elba would have been a perfect Guy Gardner.

He’s got a good attitude about it so I hope he does get another comic book role in the future…

He could be a good Dick Grayson but since she’s almost already 40 , time might have passed on that aswell.

Anyway , I was intrigued the casting and especially premise of that GL show by having Lanterns across various time periods investigating a case that ties them all together ( rumor had it the villains were the Dominators) but oh well…

Interested to see how Fillion does as Guy now and what they cook up for Lanterns!!.

I am beyond ready for the "Lanterns" series. There are so many stories they can pull from and eventually use other actor's Superheroes to come in play too.
Just like we expect the Lanterns to be part of their films, we should expect stars of the films (Superman/Girl, Batman, Dianna, ECT) to cross over into the MAX series as well.

"the red hair and the bow cut."

I went to check the source for this article to see if this dude had actually said bow cut instead of bowl cut, and saw that, lo, there was no source provided! Just some words in a void. That's Journalism!™

@clintthahamster - I clicked on the source link at the top of the page and the quote there says ‘bow cut’ aswell. But I would assume that site just made a typo, I doubt the actor literally said it

@CerealKiller1 - Oh, hah, I guess I never thought to for the source in the category header. I'm used to links like that being inline with the text. If Josh didn't have me blocked, I'd apologize for impugning his journalist bonafides, such as they are.

@clintthahamster - Trust me, if there was a way he could get away with not using sources, he would. You’re good man!

Well, atleast he was aware of fan response to "comic accuracy", so good thing he took a deepdive into comics.

Yeah I'm disappointed because it was something original and never done before. Casting was making progress even in the pandemic when we found out both actors were chosen. And it was gonna be it's own thing despite the project being done by none other than Greg Berlanti. Can imagine a few "shuddering" about the idea despite the fact Berlanti tends to deliver the majority of times.

A damn shame just because WBD is desperate for a quick cash cow grab. So much for Elseworlds, huh?
