James Gunn Confirms Where Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Fit Within The MCU Timeline

So as we know normally the MCU movies and series are mainly set in real time, meaning that the movies and shows are set within the same timeframe as they are released (ex: Age of Ultron is set in May 2015, while Ant-Man is set 2 months after the events of Ultron in July 2015, the same year and month both films were released).

But it looks like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will be joining the Iron Man trilogy, The Incredible Hulk, Jessica Jones Season 1 and Daredevil Season 2, as just like these movies and shows, Vol 2 is not going to be set in the same month as its release date, it wont be set in 2017 to begin with. James Gunn confirmed in his Facebook page, that the events of Vol 2 will be set in 2014, just 2 months after the events of Vol 1.

So if the original movie is set in August 2014 that means Vol 2 will be set in October 2014, setting it before the events of Avengers Age of Ultron, Since the Guardians will return for the upcoming Avengers movies, how this may affect the timeline in regards to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 is yet to be revealed, but that does beg the question if Groot will be fully grown by Infinity War then.

Could someone give me all of the dates/timelines within the MCU chronologically? I just always assumed one took place right after another (with the exception of First Avenger)

@OnePunchBaldy - there is no official timeline from Marvel Studios, but this unofficial timeline will give us an pretty good idea of when they are set

@OnePunchBaldy - That was the case for the longest time, but the Netflix series and Phase 3 are flarking everything up.

@eagc1995 - I like to believe that Iron Man 3 takes place after Winter Soldier. It is a great way to explain SHIELD not appearing and the other Avengers being busy.

Marvel needs to come forward with the official timeline after Phase 3 is complete. It should be part of the Infinity Gauntlet Phase 3 Box Set.

@Magus - I like to think that as well or that Iron Man 3 and Winter Solider were happening simultaneously

@OnePunchBaldy - Well having IM3 and TWS happen at the same time would be difficult considering that Tony makes a cameo in the movie as one of Project Insights targets at Avengers Tower

@Magus - Well IM3 has to be set before TWS, because lets remember that Tony appears in the movie as one project insight targets at Avengers Tower in NYC, but in IM3 Tony suffers of PTSD if he's reminded on NYC, so it would not make sense for him to be in NYC before he gets over of his PTSD.

@eagc1995 - That is hardly conclusive evidence. He could have had to be there for business or Pepper, and who's to say he wasn't suffering PTSD at the time in Winter Soldier.

Interesting. I expected it to be released after the events of AoU and Civil War.

Always glad when the directors give us a time of each event following each other, makes the cinematic universe work so much better. Gives the audience a little heads up in between the movie with bad blood carrying over or something thats hinted within the movie that has happened.

Wrong. Gunn is forgetting about time dilation. It's not really 2014 Earth time. When they return to Earth, they could easily arrive in the year 2018.
