Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was (most likely) James Gunn's final GOTG movie, and it served as a fitting send-off for the team - but it did also lay the groundwork for potential follow-ups/spin-offs at the same time.

One post-credits scene introduced a new incarnation of the team led by Rocket Raccoon, and the other teased the possibility of a solo Star-Lord adventure, with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) returning to Earth to reconnect with his grandfather.

On the commentary for Vol. 3's Digital release, Gunn addressed that final "The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return" title card, and it sounds like there are indeed tentative plans in place for a spin-off focusing on Quill's effort to adapt to life back on Terra.

"Oh, but not quite over. We always want to give somebody a little something special. And Chris and I, forever, have talked about how great it would be to be able to do a 'Legendary Star-Lord' movie, a story with Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to the environment of Earth in the same way that somebody else might try to adapt to the alien environment of outer space. He's a fish out of water in just kind of regular water. So I can't wait to see it."

Gunn doesn't seem to have any intention of helming this project (be it a film or Disney+ series) himself, but it certainly sounds like there have been discussions at Marvel Studios about developing some kind of Star-Lord spin-off.

If and when the Legendary Star-Lord does return, would you be interested in Gunn and Pratt's idea of following the character as he re-adapts to life on Earth? Let us know in the comments.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now available on Digital platforms.

Here’s hoping they use the Church of Eternal Truth as the main villain. It would be a great way to introduce the Spartax Empire and by extension L’ssa (the comic version of Peter’s true love) and the war he got roped into.

@Leviathan - They did kinda fold elements of the Church of Eternal Truth into The Sovereign. And the Spartax thing was sort of replaced by Ego.

@Leviathan - Yeah, I really doubt Pratt will go for a villain with "Church" in the title.

@TheWinkler - Fair enough. There’s a lot of other villainous groups they could use. It would be interesting to see the Badoon finally introduced into the MCU.

Starlord movie sounds fun, a Starlord movie set on earth doesn’t

@Taonrey - I like the idea of Star Lord being dragged out of retirement from Earth by a bunch of alien morons who’ve heard of his famous/exaggerated adventures like Galaxy Quest, for him to play up to the ego stroking and be hilariously out matched and expected to take on the likes of Dire Wraiths.

@Taonrey - EXACTLY! I want (and expect) to see Spiderman on earth dealing with earthly issues. I expect to see Star-Lord in space dealing with cosmic-issues. What they are proposing is taking the "Star" out of "Star Lord". 🫤

@SuperiorHeckler - Remember that little movie when Spider-Man spent 75% of his screen time in space? Avengers: Infinity War?

These characters certainly have a norm - and as you say, Spidey being on Earth and Star Lord being in space certainly is the norm for those character - but sometimes as a one off making an exception to the rule can be a really interesting storytelling opportunity that's full of potential.

I wouldn't want Star Lord to become a permanently Earth-bound character - but a one-off movie or Disney Plus series taking a somewhat comedic approach at exploring his life now he's back on Earth? That could be a hell of a lot of fun if done right.

Star-Lord definitely has the potential to lead a solo movie. Whether or not his adventures on Earth justifies making one, I don’t know. If Gunn is out of Guardians, maybe he can still stay on this one.

@WeaponXCII - Just saw the movie today. Pratts acting was mostly dogshit. Cooper walked circles around him without ever showing his actual face. Dave had so much potential, but Hollywood's addiction to stereotypical tropes never allowed him beyond the perimeter of a "loveable lug".

Pratt acted as if he expected Gamora to remember something that never happened in her lifetime.

Saddest part: it's still probably one of the top 3 products of phase 4 & 5.

It had excellent moments. The good outweighs the bad, but seeing Pratt being "a normal citizen" sounds like Victoria Alonzo's last Stand. 🪙🪙

@VictorAlonzo - Pratt was fantastic in this. That dogshit aroma your picking up on is your upper lip. Brush your teeth.

@McMurdo - "you're". The conversation ended once the error was read.

I'm not mad at your opinion. I also like this guy as an actor.

Still, some of his scenes felt overly dramatic and over the top: TO ME.
