GOTG VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Says "Dark" Threequel Is The Last Time We'll See "This Team"

In a new interview, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has shared some new details on his MCU threequel, and it sounds like fans should prepare for a major status quo shift got the team.

James Gunn has previously suggested that fans should expect to bid farewell to at least one member of the team in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and it sounds like a heartbreaking death or two might only be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the major status quo shift we should prepare ourselves for.

While speaking to Deadline from the set of the Marvel Studios threequel, Gunn confirmed that “this is the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians.”

“It’s big; it’s so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be,” the filmmaker continued. “I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story. That’s always a little bit scary; I’m doing my best.”

“I’m aware that the third film in most trilogies sucks; not always,” he added.

Of course, just because this original incarnation of the GOTG will be no more after Vol. 3, doesn't mean some of the character won't stick around in The MCU and possibly even form a new version of the team down the line.

Specific story details are still a closely guarded secret, but a few nuggets have been revealed over the past year or so. We do know that Gamora (Zoe Saldana) will be a big part of the movie, and a recent report indicated that her relationship with Nebula (Karen Gillan) is going to be the main focus. Of course, this Gamora is a Variant of the original who doesn't know any of her teammates, so we can probably expect a very different dynamic.

Saldana and Gillan will be joined by the returning Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Dave Bautista (Drax), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Sean Gunn (Rocket/Kraglin), and Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord/Starhawk, with Will Poulter on board as Adam Warlock and Peacemaker actor Chukwudi Iwuji in an undisclosed role.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 23, 2023.

Drax will probably die

Everyone else will split up

Really with Thanos dead there is nothing to do with Drax

@dracula - apparently Bradley Cooper is done with the role, so it's possible rocket could die too.
OmegaBlack13

@dracula - This is true but to be fair they haven’t really followed that since the first one anyway
ThorArms

@Origame - you don't really need Cooper to do Rocket
Origame
Origame - 1/27/2022, 9:54 PM
@ThorArms - Cooper is too distinct of a voice. It'd be just as jarring as a live action recast.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 1/27/2022, 10:26 PM
@dracula - I agree.
And not only that, he wants to die since the first movie.

@dracula - Thanos returns from Mistress Death's realm, and brings her back with him (about time!), then Drax can die and be resurrected in his original cosmic powered form. They beat the crap out of each other. Job done.

A bit backwards but it achieves what they should have done 10 years ago.

@Origame -

*Cooper is too distinct of a voice.*

Nah, he can be replaced.💁

@dracula - 100% Drax will die.

Should've died in IW actually.

@Origame - not really, the one that's doing the Rocket voice in the videogame could replace him. He kind sounds like movie Rocket.

@Corruptor - Thanos had a perfect end. No need to be bringing him back. It would undo everything from Endgame.

@IronMan616 - strongly disagree.

@IronMan616 - @IronMan616 - Thanos always comes back, it's part of his "arrangement" with Death. There is lots more they can do with him. Starlin wants to see the Magus saga, so you'd then see Will Poulter getting beaten to a pulp and another Will Poulter from the past come to zap the future Will Poulter just before he carks it. For example.

@Corruptor - There is zero arrangement with death in this continuity.

@ThorArms @origame - The voice actor in the Guardians game was great and it wasn’t a jarring transition for me at all. Comparatively, though I also really liked Star Lord, the difference in his voice and character took me a little while to get used to.
Origame
Origame - 1/28/2022, 11:22 AM
@Santanaonfire - it wasn't jarring because it wasn't the mcu.
Santanaonfire
Santanaonfire - 1/28/2022, 12:20 PM
@Origame - Eh… while the game isnt the MCU, it still took a lot of queues for Gunn’s movies. It was its own thing for sure, but out of the voice actors, I felt Rocket’s was the most similar to Cooper’s voice acting. That said, Cooper would be stupid to quit playing Rocket. Voice acting is a cake gig. He doesn’t even have to do the motion capture. Just show up to a voice studio, which can pretty much be anywhere, and say your lines. What’s that take, a week tops with maybe a return for some pickups? Anyway, I think they could find a voice replacement for him easy enough. There’s voice actors that make their entire living doing impersonations for TV dubs for actors. You think they get A-list stars to come back years later to say “horse feathers” instead of “motherf*****” for TV edits? 😉
Origame
Origame - 1/28/2022, 12:59 PM
@Santanaonfire - so what if it did? It very clearly wasn't, and the mcu version is one we spent 4 movies getting to know.
Corruptor
Corruptor - 1/28/2022, 2:39 PM
@Razorface1 - Not yet there isn't. But if it happens people who think it's a bad idea now will say "oh what a good idea" and "in Feige we trust".

It's to stop the future Will Poulter turning into an even further in the future Will Poulter with an afro. So someone has to do it.
Razorface1
Razorface1 - 1/28/2022, 3:31 PM
@Corruptor - It will still be a bad idea. Yo don't get to talk for other people.
Santanaonfire
Santanaonfire - 1/28/2022, 4:14 PM
@Origame - I hope this doesn’t feel contentious! Lol. My point, I guess, is that I don’t want Rocket to die, I don’t want Cooper to keep voicing him, but if Rocket lives and Cooper is done, I don’t think it’s much of a problem. What ever comes to pass, looking forward to what Gunn has in store for us. Cheers, fellow GotG fan 🍻
Origame
Origame - 1/28/2022, 4:41 PM
@Santanaonfire - I mean, I understand your feelings on the matter. But marvel has clearly shown an actor keeps the role or it dies approach with its characters lately.
Corruptor
Corruptor - 1/28/2022, 5:20 PM
@Razorface1 - That's what you are doing by saying it will be a bad idea. You mean a bad idea in your opinion.
Don't take it so seriously, it's only comics.
He will be back though. As soon as someone thinks there's dollars in it.
Santanaonfire
Santanaonfire - 1/28/2022, 7:16 PM
@Origame - I see your point, and that’s fair. And even appreciated, really, given how in the comics, pretty much no death (or even status quo change) is permanent, and that takes some gravity away from it. P.S. typo I only just caught on my last message - I DO want Cooper to keep voicing Rocket. I think you got that, but just wanted to be clear.

I'm good with that, lets end on a high note. I really don't think it can be understated what Gunn did forbthis property. We've seen other D list comic properties be successful in the box office but i think this was different. The GoTG were nobodies even for comic book fans. Now there are animated series, AAA games, a telltale game. It's a big fricking property now, and they all pull directly from his vision. I don't think theres anything else comparable imo.
Asterisk

@FishyZombie - James Gunn is just as important as Feige, Favreau, Downey, Whedon in establishing the overall tone of the MCU IMO. Though GOTG came relatively late in the game it blew open the floodgates for what was cosmically and tonally possible for the overall franchise. He is truly a CBM auteur

While these movies are definitely light hearted, the darker and more emotional moments struck really hard for that reason. Definitely intrigued to hear this, after all the man made Super and Peacemaker so he can certainly pull something like this off.

Wonder if CBM is gonna make an article about Ezra Miller threatening KKK members and telling them to kill themselves. Would like to see how this site reacts to that lmao
