GOTG VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Says He Was "Consulting On All The Marvel Movies"

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has revealed that Kevin Feige reached out to him for advice on several major MCU film and TV projects, including Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel.

From what we can gather, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn was pretty much given free rein to do as he pleased on the GOTG trilogy, but it sounds like his insight may have also played a part in shaping some other MCU projects.

During a recent interview, Gunn revealed that Kevin Feige reached out to him for feedback on multiple scripts, including Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man (he doesn't specify which one, but Homecoming and/or Far From Home seem most likely given the timeframe of the other films he mentioned).

"I was consulting on everything," the filmmaker told The Wrap. "I was consulting on all the Marvel movies. Kevin [Feige] would send me the script for Spider-Man and I'd give my notes. He'd send me the script for Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and I'd give notes on all of those scripts. It was really as a friend and as somebody who was a part of the team and a team player."

We have no idea how extensive Gunn's notes were, but the notion that he may have had a hand in developing, even to a minor extent, other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies is certainly interesting.

Vol. 3 will most likely be Gunn's MCU swansong, as he turns his focus to the DCU as DC Studios co-head along with Peter Safran. Could he still occasionally consult on Marvel projects going forward? Possibly, although it'd be difficult to imagine him finding the time!

Check out the full video interview, which also features Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), below.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now in theaters.

OK, I finally saw the movie tonight. I waited for a woman that I have been seeing to be available to watch it with me. I loved the movie! It was so good, all the right notes with drama and humor. Also, the humor was not as immature as some of the humor from volume two, which also works for me.

@RolandD - Cautiously this sounds good for a respectable BO run. But that said it still will no doubt come short of a billion and as a result the superhero fatigue people will declare the end is nigh. Again.

@RolandD - I completely agree. It had a lot better balance in this one versus Vol 2. It gave me more home for Superman: Legacy as I hope the tone is much more similar to Vol 3 than Vol 2.

The cosmic corner of the MCU is going to be barren as [frick] without Gunn. Everything is Earth-based, even The Marvels looks like half of it will be on Earth.

@RitoRevolto - "even The Marvels looks like half of it will be on Earth."
The first act probably will be, as two of the three leads are Earth-based. Beyond that, who knows?

This is especially funny because a lot of people have been trying to mentally separate this move from the recent MCU stuff as if it wasn't made under the same conditions.

It clearly was, James gunn is just that good, and had a winner on his hands.

just came out from watching it and damn what a visceral movie this one is. I believe is one of the more mature themed movies in a long time from and in the whole MCU,a great closing chapter for the Guardians as we knew them.

But Jesus, Gunn was aiming at the gut and he nailed it multiple times,i came out heartbroken from this and i can't stop thinking about Floor💔.

This movie man, damn.

Phase 2 had Whedon, phase 3 had Gunn

Who will be their next go to for notes? Raimi

If they do Thor 5, pretty clear Taika is out, maybe Raimi should direct

Both Thor and Strange were his picks before he decided on spiderman

@dracula - I'm worried, much like the comics, as the universe becomes more complex and thusly complicated, the number of dedicated followers will dwindle as the product diversifies into intangibility. The simple formula recognition has been muddied to such a depth that now its not fun, it's daunting and draining to keep up. There are too many titles to care about them all, but the MCU is a puzzle that requires all the peices... but some of the pieces are sticky and I don't wanna touch em.

@dracula - I honestly wouldn't mind it if Doctor Strange 3 is a Strange & Thor team-up. And for some reason I also can imagine Hank Pym in there

@dracula - Raimi took the check and bounced, he didnt even care bout 80% of his movie getting reshot.
The lack of a clear vision is the reason of the decline of the MCU, they are lacking a creative person or team, Kevin Feige is a business man.

Wouldn't be surprised if Feige did this with more writers and directors. Can imagine the Russos, McFeely & Markus, McKenna & Sommers, Watts, Reed and more recently Coogler and Cretton being on that list as well.

They have to collaborate with their top directors & writers since the movies are all connected & lead to huge team up movies.

The Russos were involved all the MCU movies for 6 years. All of this makes perfect sense.

Disney openly announced he was going to be in charge of the "cosmic aspect of the MCU" after Guardians 2 came out, this isnt a surprise, and it would explain the decline in quality after he was fired.

On the other hand, Gunn is known for doing this kind of stuff, in 2016 he told his pal Zack Snyder it was a mistake to introduce Darkseid so soon, because general audiences would think he was just a Thanos rip-off...we never saw the original Snyder cut of the movie (the one Warner hated), but some reports claim in that cut, Darkseid wasnt present in that cut.

Blergh - 5/14/2023, 10:57 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - to be fair we don't know anything concrete on Snyder's original cut since the guy muddied the waters with his revisionist history so much the movie could have been the next Citizen Kane.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/14/2023, 11:05 AM
@Blergh - Pretty much, we only have word from screentests, and some people who saw that original cut said Darkseid wasnt in the movie.
We do know that Snyder's idea was for Darkseid to appear in Cyborg's vision, that was it, he added him as a prominent character in the cut he made in 2021...and as Gunn said, he looks like a Thanos rip-off, the "get ready the armada" is just different words for "I'll do it myself"
JoJo1982
JoJo1982 - 5/14/2023, 11:29 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Disney did openly said he would be in charge of the cosmic side, but than he was fired before Phase 3 was even close to being over. He didn’t come back to Marvel until, Phase 4 was already coming out
JoJo1982
JoJo1982 - 5/14/2023, 11:30 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - also when did Gunn tell Snyder that it was a mistake to show Darkseid?
Blergh
Blergh - 5/14/2023, 11:31 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I'm convinced that the Cut we got to see was far removed from what he actually had originally planned. All the "it's finished and just sitting in a vault" bs was just to stoke the flames, he's good at that.

I mean...in the end the result was barely any better than the theatrical version so I guess no one won except the fans that believe it to be the second coming of movies.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/14/2023, 2:35 PM
@JoJo1982 - You want me to go and find news from 7 years ago???

@Blergh - He added A LOT of stuff not present in his original cut (it took 1 year of work and $70M to make ZSJL), and he also CHANGED a lot people of what people didnt like in the theatrical cut that was shot by him, this includes some of the cringy lines present in the trailer he himself showed back at Comic Con 2016.

And his cut is A LOT better than the Whedon Cut, there is no debate on that, and I'm pretty sure his original cut was also better...I mean, have you seen the Whedon Cut lately? shit is unwatchable.
This doesnt change the fact that he lied about his cut being "finished" in 2017, it was just 4 hours of unedited footage, with things like the black suit being added later digitally.
Blergh
Blergh - 5/14/2023, 3:51 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I disagree, the Whedon Cut, while cringy, had the mercy to actually end while the Snyder Cut was an unwatchable slog of brown colors, scenes that went on WAY TOO LONG and just didn't have any momentum.

@TheHumanSpider2

“A LOT of stuff not present in his original cut (it took 1 year of work and $70M to make ZSJL)”

He added Martian Manhunter in the Lois Lane/Martha Kent scene and the post credit scenes. Most of the 70 mil went to completing VFX for the movie.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/15/2023, 9:33 AM
@regularmovieguy - He made part of Cyborg's vision (Superman holding Lois's corpse was actually footage from MoS), he digitally added the black suit, the whole new ending with Bruce and MM, the new knightmare sequence, most Darkseid scenes, etc
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 5/15/2023, 10:37 AM
@TheHumanSpider2

Darkseid's scenes were mostly all digital... there's no reason to think they wouldn't have been in the final cut when Steppenwolf's whole character revolves around him.

And again, most of that 70 million went to completing VFX and the post credit scenes.
