GOTG VOL. 3 Star Zoe Saldaña Had A Different Ending In Mind For Gamora - SPOILERS

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 didn't end how a lot of people figured it would... including one of its main stars. In a new interview, Zoe Saldaña reveals that she had a different fate in mind for Gamora.

After James Gunn teased a far bleaker final film in his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and some pretty foreboding trailers, fans were preparing themselves to see at least one or two beloved characters killed off in the movie.

While Vol. 3 was an emotional viewing experience in many ways, it ended up keeping its crew of intergalactic A-holes alive and in one piece... even if most of them did go their separate ways after defeating the High Evolutionary.

Another big surprise was Gamora - who wasn't the character we knew from the first two movies, but an alternate timeline Variant - choosing to leave the Guardians and return to her Ravager family after bonding with Peter Quill and the others.

While speaking to THR about the film, Zoe Saldaña admitted that she did initially envision a different fate for the Deadliest Woman in the Galaxy.

"It was a bittersweet decision, obviously. I wanted to know that in the final chapter, Gamora stays on and finds a way to become a Guardian again. But this felt like the right way to end things for her, because of what she had been through. At the end of the day, any multiverse that she would’ve come from, she was still going to have the same experience with Thanos [Josh Brolin], and she was still gonna have the same guilt and the same trauma. So she finally found solace with the Ravagers, and she felt more open than she had ever been."

As Gamora bids farewell to Star-Lord, she whispers, "I bet we were fun," finally acknowledging their connection.

"I think the whole thing with Peter bothered her, because even though she had no recollection of who he was, she had a sense that it must have been special. And I appreciated that takeaway because it kind of gave us the hope that if the Guardians seek help again from the Ravagers, maybe Gamora and Peter will find a way back into each other’s lives, even if it’s just as friends."

Would you have preferred to see Gamora remain on Knowhere with her Nebula, or maybe even accompany Quill to Earth?

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now available on Digital platforms, and is coming to Disney+ on August 2.

I kinda agree with her, in that I think it would've worked more, to me, for her to hint more at the end that she's valuing the team and Quill, in a more intimate and personal way.

It's okay. I got a special pass from my very respectable Dr. McGee.

They couldn't have the full happy ending with her back with the Guardians IMO. There had to be permanent ramifications for some people from the snap or else the snap loses it's weight. Yes, there is a Gamora alive in the MCU somewhere again but it's not as it was.

@CplHicks - Honestly, I think that this is at the root of the MCU's Phase 4 problems. Half of the people on earth disappeared, and stayed gone for five entire years. Outside of WandaVision and TFATWS, it was only mentioned in passing. Think about how something like 9/11 resonated in world culture, and then multiply the scale of loss by literally a million times. There's no way that life would just return to normal so soon after all those folks returned. It should have been the central narrative for all of Phase 4.

@ClintThaHamster - they jumped too soon in the multiverse thing.

@ClintThaHamster - I feel like they might have been trying to do too many things at once that leads to the feeling of disjointedness

I’m not as down on Phase 4 or the MCU in general as others seem to be atleast on here ( though I would be lying if I said that I’m very excited for the projects coming up because I honestly am not interested all that much as of yet) but I do think they have maybe bitten off more then they could chew…

Not only are we dealing with the introduction of many new characters but also dealing with the post EG fallout for some aswell as setting up the new Saga and Big Bad

It’s ALOT.

@CplHicks - The ramifications of the Snap have already pretty mush lost their impact especially since Feige coincidentally dusted just the right people.

@ClintThaHamster - That’s absolutely the problem with Phase 4.

Phase 1-3 was about introducing characters and building a narrative.

They treated Phase 4 as an introduction for new heroes to replace the old ones.

But Phase 4 should’ve really been about loss and grief. I mean goddamn they started with WandaVision and the universe played a cruel joke and made Black Panther 2 all about it.

They started so close with WandaVision episode 4 with showing people returning from the snap. They touched on it a bit with Yelena in Hawkeye.

So many of the projects were setup for it COVID or not. Black Widow could’ve been a Christopher Nolan-esque non-linear film with focus squarely on Natasha and Yelena. Do without Red Guardian and all that extra crap (esp Taskmaster) and make Yelena seem to be the villain mirroring the hero (a tired MCU trope but it would’ve worked). But no, they had to build out the Thunderbolts.

Falcon and Winter Soldier to me wasnt as terrible as people made it out to be; but it absolutely should’ve focused more on the snap. Sam’s sister could’ve been unsnapped, etc.

No Way Home could’ve at least acknowledged that May wasn’t snapped and she lost Peter for 5 years, and made her death even more impactful since they lost so much time.

But no. Missed opportunities. Which is what the MCU has become.

@AllsGood - it only proved that the guardians IP is still strong and Gunn knows what he's doing.

Comicbookmovie is not a genre anyway, Guardians is a scifi superhero movie.

The real question is does the superhero movie genre still strong enough to warrant the making of 10 of them every year.

@Usernametaken - 10 movie a year? Marvel Studios only making 3 or 4 movies a year. 2021 was a Pandemic year for all studios any movie released that year has a pass.

@AllsGood - marvel studios aren't the only ones making superhero movies.

And I didn't talk about 2021. 2022 and 2023 are the only years we need to look at to see the decline.
