GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Once Introduced A Female Version Of Cosmic Superhero Genis-Vell

One of the young actors rescued from The High Evolutionary's ship in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has revealed that, in an earlier version of James Gunn's threequel, they shared a name with a cosmic hero.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 introduces a group of kids created by The High Evolutionary, though one of them ended up standing out from the rest. Actress Kai Zen is credited as "Phyla," and in the threequel's mid-credits scene, joins the Rocket Raccoon-led Guardians.

It's unclear what abilities she has, but comic book fans will know the youngster likely meant to be Phyla-Vell. In the comic books, she's the daughter of original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, and the sister of Genis-Vell. Over the years, she's been known as Quasar, Captain Marvel, and Martyr, so something tells us she has an important future in the MCU.

Now, actress Sarah Anne - another of The High Evolutionary's creations in Vol. 3 - has revealed that her character, Latti, was originally called Genis.

"She’s a starkid who's brave in the face of danger and loves making Joob joobs (good friends) in [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3]," Anne says in the Instagram post below, adding: "Fun fact: my character’s name used to be Genis!"

On the page, she is a he and was cloned from the DNA of the Kree warrior Mar-Vell. Implanted with false memories that made him believe he was Starfox's son, Genis was artificially aged so that he'd be ready to face Mar-Vell's enemies. He inherited the title of Captain Marvel, but succumbed to the madness of Cosmic Awareness after becoming nearly omnipotent and seeking to "fix" the universe.

It seems early plans called for Phyla and Genis to be sisters in the MCU, though your guess is as good as ours when it comes to why exactly plans changed.

It's also worth noting that Marvel Studios may have other plans for these member of the Mar-Vell family, though that character has undergone some major changes in the MCU and is a) dead and b) portrayed as a woman by Annette Bening in Captain Marvel.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently playing in theaters.

Genis Vell is one of the coolest character designs in comics history. I hope they find a way to adapt him to the screen at some point. Maybe Captain Marvel 3 could use him as a villain, and maybe even set up Noh Varr along the way too.

More gender bending, how unorthodox and daring. If only the scripts were so

The only complaint people had with Endgame was that cringy A team scene that made no sense so Marvel and Disney with their petty selves said lets double down

@Matchesz - Phyla-vell (quasar) has been around for almost 20 years in the comics. She wasn’t created for this movie.

I'm going to concentrate on the fact she used to be Genis and is now Latti. I'm sure James Gunn probably was the writer who thought of gender swapping Genis but it seems someone at Marvel didn't see the importance of doing for a character with limited screentime. I doubt we'll see her or the actress who is playing Phyla now again. Marvel Studios probably will age Phyla in her next appearance with another actress and will most likely have a redesign. The studio has already shown a propensity to recast young characters like Cassie Lang and Billy Maximoff.

This does highlight a problem with Marvel's decision-making in previous films. How to handle Mar-Vell's legacy going forward in the MCU after gender swapping the character in Captain Marvel. Mar-Vell has connections to several legacy characters like Phyla-Vell, Genis-Vell and Hulkling. Are any of those characters going to have a connection to Mar-Vell? Perhaps, Hulkling, due to his Kree lineage but it looks like Phyla and Genis, if they ever introduce him, won't. Phyla will most likely be another alien species introduced by James Gunn, like Mantis and Drax.

Another thing to bring up is Phase 4 started 2 1/2 years ago and in that time, we have been introduced to several young Avengers or young female characters. America Chavez, Riri Williams, Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, teenage Cassie Lang, Phyla. I would add Love, from Thor 4, but I don't have a clue to how Marvel Studios plays that character as ongoing. If Marvel had kept with the gender-swap of Genis that would have just compounded Marvel Studios seemingly obsession with adapting female characters and almost completely ignoring young male characters. There is a record growing pretty obvious now which can't be ignored. We've yet to get a fully realized new male Young Avenger character or young male hero, for that matter, in the last 18 live-action MCU projects. Hopefully, we see some balance on that in 2024.

And yeah, I know we have a pre-Patriot, preteen Maximoff twins, kid Loki, kid T'Challa and Skaar but most of them are simply either kids or were introduced in cameo form -not properly introduced as fully realized heroes in their own right as Marvel Studios has gone to great levels in introducing their female counterparts.
