And it's not what anyone expected

Entertainment Weekly, based on several blog reports, are stating that shortly after the Tron panel at comic-com Guillermo Del Toro made a surprise announcement concerning his next project.....

In a surprise appearance following Disney’s Tron: Legacy presentation at Comic-Con, director Guillermo del Toro announced he will be directing a new big screen adaptation of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion ride. Unlike the last movie version of Haunted Mansion, which starred Eddie Murphy, del Toro said the live-action film will not be a comedy, but instead will be “very scary — if you take the children, they will scream.” Del Toro said he has visited the Haunted Mansion ride many times since he was a kid, describing it as “a place where I go when I need to think and to relax.” The director, described the Haunted Mansion project as “a dream come true.”

Well there you have it, after weeks of speculation including everything from Dr. Strange to Deadman and back again, this is Del Torro's next big secret project. I could see him pulling this movie off, but I'll admit its something I don't think anyone saw coming.

HAunted Mansion is a Disney Movie
Dr. Strange will be a Disney movie
Del Toro is tricking us.

He is in talk w/Disney to do a movie and Dr. Strange is a franchise that is more important than Haunted Mansion

I'm not sure why it was absolutely necessary to announce this at COMIC con. Dr. Strange or Hellboy 3 on the other hand.

The worst thing sis, he said that he was offered all sort of fanboy stuff that would have had us all going nuts!..I bet that included something like Dr Strange. But he had to blow them off for this..I mean it might be great but still, The haunted frakking mansion?

They should do a trade off. They let him make his Haunted Mansion movie and he'll direct Doctor Strange for them.

Was really hoping for Dr. Strange. Oh well, maybe Marvel has somebody else in mind. I think the reason nobody saw this coming is because nobody saw the first movie and do we really need another Haunted Mansion?

The fact he probably turned down Doctor Strange, along with several other projects I'm sure we would have all loved, for this has made me lose all respect for him. Marvel can find someone better to direct it now. :P

Yeah, pretty damned lame. Wish he would've stuck with the Hobbit.

To repeat myself from the last story:

WHAT?!?! This had better be the greatest freaking movie ever made, considering the stuff he could be doing!

AND Disney owns Marvel, so they COULD have tried to get him for Dr. Strange! Even more offensive! I guess I should be glad he's working with the company, though. Maybe it will lead to better things.

And yes, because it is Del Toro, I will still go see it and it will still me good. Just not what I wanted.

Belay that talk, JoshW! We can't turn on him till he makes a bad film.

Well, maybe if we find out he rejected Dr. Strange for no good reason.

im not gonna get pissed and bail on the guy cause we dont like his decision. i can see him making an awesome frigen movie out of this. those hobbit movies are never gonna happen anyway.
tazmaniak
tazmaniak - 7/22/2010, 2:11 PM
I'd think he'd want to do Hellboy 3, now that he isn't doing the Hobbit. There were 4 years between the first 2 movies, the last one came out in 2008, so the the third should be in 2012.Anything longer than 4 years seems excessive.

Well, maybe they'll just move on to some other qualified directors.

@superdog, yeah, I think the movie will be interesting.Seems like he's taking the concept, and making his own version of it.

lol, I know Pooch, what the Hell! So he's not as much of a massive comic nerd as we are and chose to make a different project..we are not even sure Strange was an option, but now he sucks?

...AND he's out of touch. if he thinks this is a "beloved property" OR that it will be his "biggest movie" to date he's an idiot.

THAT would have been "Mimic Bugs VS. the Tooth Fairies!"
