Guillermo Del Torro NOT Directing Haunted Mansion!

Looks like everyone jumped the gun on this one...

Guillermo Del Toro surprised everyone when he announced that his next directing project will be a movie version of the Disney ride Haunted Mansion. This caused much consternation among the fans hoping he would do a Dr Strange or Deadman movie instead. Well apparently he has clarified his statement. This courtesy of Latino Review...

"Only producing and co-writing with Matthew Robbins for now. I would love to direct it if the timing allows it but I already have the next directing project ready to be announced in a week or so. Big and unexpected and full of invention. Haunted Mansion is, however, so perfect- because into it I can finally pour decades- most of my life- of admiration and veneration for Rolly Crump, Marc Davis and Claude Coats and the incredibly stylized and impossibly cool world they created. The movie I am imagining and that I dream of bringing forth is a full-on shrine to the feel we had as kids going into these E-ticket rides. For some people Haunted Mansion is just a ride for others, like me, who got caught in it at the precise age, it is almost a way of life.

...Further more the article I posted yesterday from Entertainment Weekly has also been updated. They changed the word "directing" to "developing". Looks like everyone can calm down now. Hopefully in a few weeks he'll announce his next project as a comic book movie and everyone will start liking him again.

HUZZAH! Now a potentially crappy movie will better because he's involved AND we know he's associating himself with Disney so HOPEFULLY they will point him towards MARVEL. They should give him the whole supernatural side of the universe, maybe like DC is giving Nolan their heavy hitters.

So let me get this straight...

Del Toro is a DIRECTOR, first and foremost. He had been hyping up some sort of epic announcement he'll be making at SDCC, something so irresistible that he left his dream job of directing the Hobbit.

So he shows up and tells the comic book fanbase that not only is he NOT DIRECTING his next big project, the project is not even a comic book based movie.

Im a big fan of GDT, but c'mon... if you're going to "develop" a Haunted Mansion movie, just announce it on Twitter. Definitely do not hype it up and announce it at SDCC

KNEW that was a bad decision for him to direct such a lame project. producing it on the other hand will make the movie awesome! but he deserves a lot better...

my money is still on Frankenstein

Great find superdog! :) The thought of his next movie being The Haunted Mansion was really disappointing (even though I'm sure he would have done a great job) so this news really comes as a breath of fresh air! Doctor Strange is still on the table...wahoo!!!

"del Toro is adamant that the family film has to keep the dark imagery of the ride and be ready to scare the little ones. He also confirmed the character of the Hatbox Ghost on the ride will play a key role."

for those who dont know about the Hatbox Ghost, it "is a character that appeared originally in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion but was removed shortly after the attraction's debut, due to the effect not working well. The idea behind the Hatbox Ghost was for his head to vanish from atop his shoulders and reappear alternately inside his hatbox, in time with an adjacent bride figure's beating heart."
