WEREWOLF BY NIGHT Director Believes Making Halloween Special Black-And-White Helped Avoid TV-MA Rating

Werewolf by Night Director Michael Giacchino has revealed that he was surprised that the Halloween Special was passed with a TV-14 rating, and believed making it black-and-white helped avoid a TV-MA...

The Werewolf By Night trailer that debuted during the D23 Expo surprised us all with a couple of bloody/gruesome shots, and by all accounts, the the upcoming Halloween Special is indeed the goriest Marvel Studios project yet.

Previous MCU movies/shows have included some pretty violent scenes (Scarlet Witch's murderous rampage in the recent Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, for example), but this Disney+ Special Presentation marks the studio's first full-on foray into the horror genre, and director Michael Giacchino was actually expecting a TV-MA rating.

Making the special black-and-white obviously pays homage to the classic monster movies that inspired it, but it sounds like there may also have been a more practical reason for the decision.

“We had always assumed it would be TV-MA, but I wasn’t always involved with what was happening on that end in terms of ratings and all of that,” Giacchnio tells The Hollywood Reporter when asked how Werewolf By Night managed to secure a TV-14 rating. “But I am sure you are absolutely right that the black and white did help keep us within a certain range.”

A new trailer for Werewolf By Night should be released fairly soon. For now, you can check out the previous teaser below.

Though very little has been officially revealed about this Special, based on what we see here, there's a very good chance the extensive plot leak that did the rounds earlier this year was accurate. We do know that the episode will run for 53 minutes and focus on Jack Russell (Gael Garcia Bernal), who, along with other monster hunters, arrives at Bloodstone Temple in order to compete for the estate’s most sought-after relic.

Werewolf By Night will premiere on Disney+ just in time for Halloween on October 7.

I'm super stoked about this. More so than I have been for something Marvel for a while. Don't get me wrong, love my Marvel shows and movies, with some exceptions as always. But I have less doubt and hesitation going into this... Setting up for more disappointment? Maybe, but I'll take my chance on this.

I don't have any real connection to this character, but I love a good werewolf movie. They are way too few in my opinion. Just rewatched An American Werewolf in London, which is the gold standard. The Wolfman remake had the potential to be a classic, but the wonky effects, the flat/ludicrous plotting, and the tonally wrong direction really trashed it. Benicio deserved better.

@BestAtWhatIDo - I noticed you didn't mention Dog Soldiers as the greatest werewolf film of all-time! If you haven't seen fix that and see it now! HaHa

@WarMonkey - I have! A great one as well, but nothing tops American Werewolf IMO.

@BestAtWhatIDo - I can't say your wrong with that pick, that movie is an absolute classic and in like everyone's top 3 and most people's top 1. I just love Dog Soldiers so much!

Runtime is 53 minutes. I’m glad that rumor that stated it was cut from an hour to 30 minutes was untrue, now I’m definitely looking forward to this.

@WruceBayne - 53 minutes but 20 minutes of opening and closing credits with concept art, because Disney knows we love to watch concept art for 10 minutes.

My preference would be to do more of these monster themed MCU entires as black and white odes to classic monster movies. It helps to carve a niche out for this corner of the MCU.

I loved "The Lighthouse" in black & white.
I could definetly imagine a Punisher film in b&w if it is gritty.

They should release this with an option to watch in colour.

I want to see the greens of Man-Thing.

I would be more excited for this if this wasn't part of the MCU. If they started a Marvel Monster Universe i would be interested.
