Could Nortongate be a hoax?

Considering the proximity to Comic Con, one has to wonder if we're being punk'd.

I think the whole thing is probably real. I can't help but wonder if the whole thing is a joke set up by Whedon, Feige, and Norton. So I thought I'd stir up some speculation.

Here are a few red flags.

1- Proximity to Comic Con
With the convention under a month away, one has to wonder about the timing. Keeping it close to the convention would minimize the impact, and make things easier to keep under wraps.

2- Method of Notification
So far we've heard from Marvel, but I've been told it's not posted on their official site, which would be normal. I'm not an expert here, editors or regulars feel free to confirm or deny the validity of this.

At the same time, we hear a response from Ed's agent. Not Ed himself. Norton's been invested enough in this process that I'd have expected to hear a statement from the man himself addressed to the fans. But nothing.

It feels like they're giving us the info through official sources, but not quite official enough that they'll be called outright liars or cause too much confusion or controversy.

3- Tone of Marvel's Statement
Marvel's statement seems a little too insulting to be official to me. It just seems like standard practice to give a vague "creative differences" kind of statement in these circumstances, so as not to burn bridges in the community. As stated in his agent's reply, Ed is good friends with a number of the people on the Avengers- and he has a lot of ties in Hollywood. It seems like a big company like Marvel would try to minimize the damage, and just say "look, sorry, but it's not happening" and not add any little comments or whatever.

So I dunno. Am I just wishing here? Time will tell. But I wanted to pose the question.

What would be the point of them "punking" the fans? I'm confused by that. Marvel has said he's not returning and states reasons that Norton is rather infamous for. His agent made a statement for Norton...which is what his job is.

I wish I could get on board with this, but it was Kevin Feige who made the announcement....not some "inside source"...

As much as I wish it were a hoax, I doubt it. But if they brought out Norton at the Comic Con panel to announce his involvement, it would be the single greatest event at SDCC ever. EVER.

I'm still holding out for hope that it is a hoax. We will just have to wait and see until Comi-Con rolls by. Thanks for bringing this up.

If this were a hoax it would be a great way to difuse rumours of trouble between Norton and Marvel from TIH, and get a few laughs out of the previous situation, and the only reason it would seem like a hoax is Kevin Feige's out of left field bitch slap to Norton over being a team player which is very unusual in the movie business, especially considering the one thing people complain about Hollywood is in the constantly apparent ass kissing that goes on in interviews, and yet heres Marvels big honcho not citing "creative differences" but basicly calling Norton out as a douche, pretty much unheard of. When was the last time you read a press release like that, I mean as much as i've liked what Marvels done, and agreed with their shrewd business tactics that was just rude, whether you get along with someone or not thats very unprofessional, just be polite and move on. So on some level I'm hoping that this is just a huge prank against internet "journalism" yet on another level I'm more inclined to believe this is just the result of 2 control freaks who have resorted to school yard sniveling.

I think they could be pulling a fast one for a big reveal at Comic-Con. I could picture Norton on a video feed at first, saying, "You've made me angry Kevin, you won't like me when I'm angry...", then turning into the big green guy and rampaging. Shortly after the camera "gets destroyed", Norton could walk on stage in tattered clothes. It would be classic!!! That's what the fan-boy in me (of both Marvel and Norton) is really hoping anyway.

This will be a great way to introduce Banner as the Bad guy in avengers... I hope it's part of the marketing campaing.

You know what really bothers me? Marvel, which is trying to sell the idea of stability and significance through its developed plans to introduce the Avengers through the union of its members, to date, has shown instability. Marvel had two major changes in their line-up: Terrence Howard and Don Cheadle (no matter what I have been the reason) and now this is very imporant to: Edward Norton!

I expect that this will be part of their marketing campaing. Though certanly, won't be...

I agree with you DannyRand and Kaboom. I think this is all a hoax too. Marvel Studios (Unlike all others) does care about making the fans happy. That’s Look at Iron Man 1,2, and Incredible Hulk. They want to make movies that both entertain general audiences and the Fans. I don't they are Stupid enough to get rid of Norton.

Good point, but I don't think there's a chance.

Although, a few months ago Norton was asking for a big fan response to bring Hulk/Norton back, almost like he was begging for it:

"Well, if people want it all to come together, they’ve got to email Marvel and say, 'This is what I want.'"

and what better way to get all that attention than re-announcing Norton as Hulk at Comic-Con?

Geez, if Norton really wanted to keep playing DB/Hulk, he would just do it. It's that easy.

I'm on Marvel's side here, even though I really like Norton as DB/Hulk. They won't put up with prima donnas like T Howard or Norton. If Sam Jackson, RDJ, Scar Jo, Hopkins, Bridges, Rourke, Portman and the other STARS can deal with Marvel, why can't Norton?
