THE INCREDIBLE HULK Director Shares Dashed AVENGERS Hopes; Says He Passed On These Two MCU Movies

The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier has reflected on his time in the MCU, revealing that while he failed to land The Avengers, there were two other Marvel Studios blockbusters he was offered...

Even 15 years on, The Incredible Hulk largely remains the black sheep of the MCU family. A few years from now, it's possible "Rotten" titles like Eternals and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania will join it, and Marvel Studios has only just started referencing the 2008 blockbuster in current projects.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law featured Abomination's return, while Captain America: Brave New World will put The Leader front and centre. The movie, which was plagued by behind-the-scenes issues (largely due to lead star Edward Norton), was only a moderate critical and commercial hit, and filmmaker Louis Leterrier has now reflected on his time in the MCU in an interview with Josh Horowitz.

Reflecting on meeting with Kevin Feige and Avi Arad during Marvel Studios' early days, the director recalls getting a call from the studio and learning that, instead of Iron Man, he was being offered The Incredible Hulk.

"They called me and they said, 'We've got great news, we'd like you to direct a movie for us.' I was like, 'Iro–' and they were like, 'Hulk.' Hulk? Ang Lee did it three years before they gave me the call and I thought about it and realized, my favorite movies growing up were 'Frankenstein,' the original 'King Kong,' werewolf movies, and the 'Hulk' TV show being so formative, so I was like, 'Of course.' They saw what I couldn't see."

It seems that Marvel Studios was happy enough with Letterier's work on the Jade Giant's big screen return to want him to stick around. While it doesn't sound like he was ever in the running for The Avengers (Jon Favreau was considered before Joss Whedon) both Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy crossed his desk in the years that followed.

"I passed on 'Thor,' I was like, 'I honestly don’t know how to do that,' and 'Guardians,'" he recalls. "'Avengers,' obviously, yes, I told him about [my interest] in 'Avengers,' but I don't think I made it to the list, but I met on 'Guardians' and [Feige] actually asked me if I was interested in 'Thor.'"

"When I knew they were doing it, I went deep on it," Leterrier said of his research for Guardians of the Galaxy. "[I was thinking], 'What? It’s crazy they’re doing this!' But no, to add the sort of feeling of a space opera with the Marvel look and sense of humor would be great."

It's interesting to think about what Letterier's take on those movies might have looked like, but at the same time, Kenneth Branagh and James Gunn were undeniably the right people to tell those specific stories.

How do you look back at The Incredible Hulk a decade and a half later?

Everything worked out for the best. No dirt on his work with incredible hulk, because I enjoyed all the hulk scenes, and the overall plot, (tho felt like Edward Norton doesn't embody Bruce Banner).... avengers and guardians1 landed in the right hands of Whedon and Gunn. Those movies hold up very well today

@Vigor - Depends on which Bruce Banner.

He should direct a martial arts movie for the mcu.

Who could Jason Statham play?

Normally i'd say Taskmaster, but that role is female now.

What are your ideas?

@MarvelZombie616 - like Jason, but hes an asshole about Marvel movies https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/jason-statham-slammed-the-mcu-after-being-offered-a-role.html/....so its never gonna happen

@MarvelZombie616 - Statham good choice, I kind of wish he were Task master now. Would’ve loved to had seen him go toe to toe against Cap.

Incredible Hulk is one of the best MCU movies. Shame that Hulk is a complete joke now.

@SirDuckAlot - I never understood the hate for Incredible Hulk! Loved the tone and the story! It paired well with the first Iron Man movie. Plus I really hate seeing Banner happy!

@SirDuckAlot - I wouldn't say one of the best, nor one of the worst. It sits perfectly fine in the middle for me.

But I do agree he's a joke now. Leterrier mentioning Frankenstein also kinda makes me realize that even more. Hulk is at his best as this tragic Frankenstein/Jekyll & Hyde monster imo.

The Incredible Hulk isn't perfect or even one of my personal favorites, in terms of MCU, but I never understood how it has kinda gotten a reputation of being one of their bad movies. I feel that people would look back more fondly back to it, if it had gotten a better direct sequel, which would have build upon its strong points, or Norton had stayed in the role (although, I guess the domino effect would have meant that the rest of the MCU would look very different in that case).

I could see Leterrier making a decent Thor movie, if he was allowed to keep the story in Asgard, but can't see him helming Guardians, even a more "serious" comic-accurate take.

It was a great movie, I don't understand the hate. Maybe because it didn't make money, but it was miles better than Thors origin and on par with Cap's. Maybe because it was pretty boy hulk, at least he was chaotic and super powerful

The Incredible Hulk is still one of the best MCU origin movies. Ed Norton was an odd pick, but I think he did really good. I would have liked to see a sequel or even a trilogy. Hulk was robbed.

The Incredible Hulk was kino. Underappreciated at the time, but more appreciated in retrospect. Also, a lot of people like to say the MCU was inspired by the Ultimate Universe (it really wasn't beyond some superficial stuff), but The Incredible Hulk is like the only MCU movie that felt like it had the tone of something like The Ultimates. It was dark, it was gritty, it was brutal at times, but still had the occasional dry humor here and there. Wish if more MCU movies were like that.
