How Howard Lost War Machine Role in Iron Man 2

We've heard reports that it was over money, and others saying that the actor was "difficult". Now, we have some more detailed analysis behind the dumping of Terrence Howard--who was slated to be War Machine in Iron Man II...

Entertainment Weekly has more info on why Terrence Howard may have lost his role to Don Cheadle. Howard was in the enviable position to play heavily armed, fan-favorite "War Machine" in Iron Man 2, but in a shocking turn of events, Marvel announced that another actor, Don Cheadle, was signed in his stead.

Howard reportedly was "surprised" by the sacking, and fans expressed bafflement as well. While some insiders cited "difficult behavior" on the set of Iron Man as fodder for the firing, it turns out that the other rumor we heard--that of money, might have had more to do with it.

Not that there hasn't been some bad blood brewing concurrently alongside the money issue. EW reported that, "Favreau and his producers were ultimately unhappy with Howard's performance, and spent a lot of time cutting and reshooting his scenes."

Ouch. I wondered why nothing ever slipped out from Downey or Favs in favor of Terrence. That might have been why.

But here is the major poop. It seems that Howard was the beneficiary of a freak negotiating snafu. Somehow, having been the first to sign on to the Iron Man movie, he was able to make a sweetheart deal and was actually the highest paid actor on the whole project. Reports say he made more money than Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow and yes, even more than Robert Downey Jr! Can you believe that?

Due to how things played out, by the time everyone was signed on, there was no way to renegotiate Howard's contract. So, he lucked out on the legal and kept a leading man's salary for his co-starring role. But when it came time to do the bean counting for Iron Man 2, Marvel offered Howard a drastically reduced payday--possibly as much as 80% less than what he'd made for the first movie, and more in line with the supporting cast member’s salary of the first film. Then when Terrence blew them off, as they knew he would, Marvel went straight for Cheadle, which may have also been premeditated.

The article also states that in order to promulgate this plan, Jon Favreau and screenwriter Justin Theroux minimized Jim Rhodes’ role in the sequel, but that after Marvel got the cold response from Terrence Howard and secured Don Cheadle, they beefed up Rhodeys role.

One also assumes that War Machine may make an appearance in The Avengers movie as well since Marvel announced this week that Cheadle was also signed for that. Poor Terrence Howard has missed out on two potentially awesome comic book movies! And as if that didn't suck enough, this last week he has been tagged with a $5 million lawsuit.

The onetime Oscar nominee is facing allegations of assault from Tex Allen, the composer of the Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof that Howard headlined last winter. Allen, a jazz pianist and brother of Cat's director, Debbie Allen, claims he was punched in the kisser by Howard during a rehearsal back in January.

Ah, Hollywood drama.

man...that sucks for Terrence. I would have settled, i mean...what's a better payoff, a big payceck or being remembered for being an iconic super hero? seriously? But i'm sure Cheadle will do a good job, he's a good actor too

this was howards big break and he ruined it by asking for too much. I hope he will remember that when you get offered a multi picture deal on an enormous franchise you take the first offer. You make the real money off the fame the role gets you.

I knew it was about the pay. It goes to show how arrogant you must be to try and take a new and inexperienced company to the cleaners with a co-starring role while simultaneously eating into the production budget to pad your own wallet. With Cheadle they're trading up anyways in my opinion.

Halle Berry marred the X-men films with her arrogance. Good thing for Marvel to cut that at the throat and get someone else, someone they wanted to begin with. It just would suck to be they guy who vouched for Howard only for him to get all "Hollywood" on everyone.

I prefer cheadle over howard, my only judgement is that ive never seen cheadle in a similar role to the character of rhodes. at first glance its hard to invision him as a "body guard" character to stark.

I maybe the only one who thinks this but I think Howard did the right thing it was there fault in the first place for paying him too much for the first movie then to offer him the role again and say his character is going to have a bigger role in the movie but then try and pay him 80% LESS this time around just doesn't make any since to me so obviously Howard thought they where trying to low ball him so he tried to hold out for more money

that is most likely the reason why when asked about it Howard said it was a surprise to him he figured they payed me more last time why would they wanna pay me 80% less this time

I'm with Mista. Sound to me that they played a dirty trick on Terrence. Because they made the mistake when they signed him. They should get rid of the person from Marvel who made the deal. They offered not 80% of what he signed for, but 80% less. And cutback the role to justify it then pad it back up when they signed Cheadle. And they knew it would be rejected by him, and then run from him without negotiating. They probably had already started talking to Cheadle. Who it seems Marvel was ready to sign as soon as Howard turned down their offer. Maybe the other actors were mad that he got paid more. But instead of admitting their mistake, they play this dirty and low down trick. Sorry but you don't treat people that way. What if your job did that to you? I hope Marvel gets what it deserves for being this low.

It's all about the Benjamins when really it should be about pride. Cheadle has a greater ability to play all the different type of scenes. He is a much more versatile actor than Terrence and they should have went to him in the first place.

That is really messed up what they did to Terrence. You are suppose to get paid more for the sequals not less. If anything they should have kept it the same and paid the other actors a little bit more.
