Is Marvel Studios Planning Savage Land Film?

While questioning a rumor which surfaced a few days ago, a source tells me the building blocks for a live-action adaptation of Marvel's prehistoric Savage Land have already been laid out.

Let's cover the back story first, for those reader who aren't in the know. According to the Marvel database, the Savage Land is:

"A tropical region surrounded by volcanoes deep in Antarctica, created over 200 million years ago by the alien Nuwali as one of several planetary "game preserves" for the mysterious godlike Beyonders. The Nuwali stocked the Land with Earthly life of the era, most notably dinosaurs; as Earth's flora and fauna changed over succeeding millions of years, they supplemented their preserve with prehistoric mammals and early hominids, or "Man-Apes." When Earth's continents shifted circa 50 million BC, the Nuwali augmented the Land's volcanoes to preserve its tropical status. Following the Nuwali's departure in 200,000 BC, little is known of the Land's history for over a hundred millennia, although a faction of superhuman Eternals dwelled there at least briefly, leaving a temple complex behind. Circa 18,500 BC, it was colonized by humans of Atlantis, who exported prehistoric life throughout their empire while importing unicorns and other mystic creatures.

"Over twenty years ago, British nobleman Robert Plunder, searching for Vibranium, found his way into the Savage Land. Back in England, Plunder was threatened by those who coveted his secret, and he returned to the Land with his nine-year-old son Kevin, who was orphaned when Robert was slain by the Man-Ape Maa-Gor. Nurtured by the sabretooth Zabu, Kevin, perhaps enhanced by the Land's mysterious "Place of Mists," became known as "Ka-Zar," or "Brother of the Tiger," his uncanny skills and heroism won him respect throughout the Land while still in his teens."

Now, on to the important part. A rumor began circulating the net several days ago, regarding Marvel Studio's possible pursuit of several actors for the role of Ka-Zar. I took this information to one of my reliable sources at the studio, who told me Marvel has been planning a Savage Land film for some time now. Any official casting or production work on the adaptation is still very far away, since the studio is completely focused on their next two projects, Captain America and The Avengers.

When I asked how long Marvel has been seriously considering a Savage Land film, I received a very unexpected answer. Apparently, there have already been hints of it dropped in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, and at least one more heading our way in next year's Captain America movie. Take a look at these screecaps from the recently released Iron Man 2. The scene showed Tony Stark opening a case that belonged to his father, Howard, which contained the first Captain America comic book, home video, a journal and blueprints for the original arc reactor. If you pay close attention, you'll notice a satellite photo and a map of Antarctica; and on the map you can see an area annotated that matches up with the Savage Land's location in Marvel Comics continuity:

Will Savage Land be one of the smaller budget films Marvel Studios is already planning, or will it fit into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Only time will tell, until then, share your thoughts below.

LOL I see it that is so awesome! And that would be great! But I still don't think Pennington and Eve are Shanna and Ka'zar

I think Pennington may be Ka-Zar it was on his last character list and he tweeted this morning that he wasn't Rick Jones. :)

Pennington in loincloth for 1 1/2 hour movie is Marvel's goldmine... :) lol

Almost anything that expands the cinematic universe like this is fine with me. Been awhile since we had some good Dinosaur action on screen. King Kong, I guess.

Alexander Skarsgard is not a bad choice for Ka-Zar! I was thinking Josh Holloway, but this might be too close to what he did in Lost.

I like this, that Marvel is already mapping out subtle hints like this. They know what they're doing!

Keep up the good work, Multi!

Tank@ Nice casting.

Although, I would've preferred Skarsgard for Thor, he definitely works for Ka-Zar, and Rachel Nichols can be whoever she wants!

If this is supposed to be a smaller budget film I can really see Pennington playing the lead. All the budget would likely have to go to effects. I can see this being like 10,000 BC... hopefully better though. lol

Oh plus the new John Carter of Mars flick.. Pennington is around the same age as Taylor Kitsch? Good match.

Oh and Kellan Lutz is a total butterface. :( But hot, hot bod!

This could be a sleeper hit if done right, but almost definitely will be separated from the current Marvel U of movies. No one wants Cap, Iron Man, Hulk and KaZaar to exist together.

Nice find MULTI! I cant say that this would be up there on my priority list of movies I'd like to see Marvel Studios make but I'd definitely want to watch this!

@tankgirl - alex skarsgard is my number one pick for ka-zar if this role is to ever be casted or brought to life. 100% agreed. Brilliant actor.

@KingRob - What the hell are you talking about?!? I don't want any other heroes in this movie, but I want the Savage Land in the Marvel Universe. If you aren't looking for a reason for the Hulk and Ironman to fight dinosaurs some day what kind of a comic book fan are you? No offense.

Pennington...Skarsgard...they both would have to bulk up considerably to play the part of Kazar. 20+ pounds. I know it is doable, but we keep getting these scrawny actors (Skargard is toned well, but slight in build) being thrown out there for muscular super heroes.

Yesssss!!! I knew someobody would attempt to do a Ka-Zar movie someday! SWEET!

@ LEEE: Good pick for Shanna! I said this last time this came up and I'm saying it again... they definitely need to include The High Evolutionary and The Savage Land mutates as villians!

As far as Sauron goes I could take it or leave it. For some reason I just associate him with the X-Men which is Fox which means .... I could take it or leave it.

The Savage land was mentioned as a possible lower budget movie for Marvel along with Dazzler if you remember back a good few months ago. If this is legit, will we be seeing Dazzler? Personally I never even read a Savage Land comic! But I do like the look of Sheena:)
ManThing
ManThing - 6/9/2010, 1:05 PM
@ Massexecutions: Of all the vllians to come and go, the strangest and most interesting is The High Evolutionary.

There are tons of ways they could go with this but personally I think that would be the most fun.

Still that might not work out either because (again) of the close association with the X men. But they gotta do better than an intelligent energy sucking Pteradactyl.

Hey, High Evolutionary showed up in Thor a lot too, back in the day. Definitely someone you could make interesting on screen. Complex motivation.
