Iron Man might be a real thing, if the USAF has anything to say about it. MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL currently has over 2 dozen people working on TALOS, or Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit. It is being tauted as an honest to goodness "Iron Man Suit", even by the U.S. Defense Dept.

This suit will be a major upgrade for Special Forces, Green Berets, Navy SEALS, and more as currently they carry on average 90 ounds of gear, with only 20% armored protection. This suit, which will be designed with 100% coverage in mind, will actually be lighter than their current gear, thanks to gears and actualizers.

There are many companies working on similar "Iron Man" projects, including Revision Military, which already has a working prototype.

I saw something like this before a few years ago. Kind of a mix between a Boba Fett bod armor and exoskeleton.

@GliderMan - Actually, no its not, as this story was just posted via WTSP. There have been rumors abound for years, but this is the first official release from the military on the subject.

I'm looking into more sources at MacDill to see if any more info is available/declassified. Once I have more, I'll fill everyone in.

@GliderMan

Talk is one thing, actually building it is another. Do you know just how many "ideas" are tossed about by Congress that never even get a chance for development? This is actually being built right now, as we speak. Also, the above photo is just that; a PHOTO. Its not concept art. This is a pic of the actual suit. So, again, this isn't old news. Its only 3 years away from actual deployment.

During my time in service, concepts were tossed about like leaves in a tornado, only to never see the light of day. They're actually building and testing this, and i luckily right in my backyard. It's gonna happen and its going to be MARVELous (I know, I know, bad pun, but I couldn't resist).

Looks like bad CG.

Watches source video.

Oh, it is bad CG. The hilarious thing is that it's just a local news soft piece fellating a local military contractor. The real prototype looks fine, but not like a cutscene from a PS1 game... :)

I think it's safe to say that when cosplayers look better than your product, steer clear of inviting the comparison.

Rather get the super soldier syrum. Be badass in and out of the suit.

Not news. DARPA has been working on this, and other similar prototypes for years. The problem is they are always too expensive to actually make and deploy. The TALOS suit is more appropriately compared to the suits work in HALO than Iron Man. It's an armored, power-assisted suit with enhanced HUD and comm capability. To date, the complete suit is only imaginary, appearing in CGI concept videos. The real suit components, actually created and in testing, look more like the suits from Edge of Tomorrow (Tom Cruise) than the one pictured above. The reality is that DARPA and private interests have created some brilliant weapons technology in the last 15 years, and it's almost all too expensive to actually deploy. We love good stories about awesome weapons, but we hate the price tag. It makes for great TV, but we're still years and years away from even having a fully operational prototype.
