Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is being advertised as the culmination of a "six-year animated journey," and a new report claims that the plan is for it to end the current era of the DC Animated Movie Universe. According to ComicBook.com, the film will be the final instalment in the series which kicked off with 2014's Justice League: War.
That introduced the concept of a shared animated universe, but given how heavily inspired it's been by "The New 52" era of storytelling, it's no great surprise that Warner Bros. is looking for a fresh start. With any luck, that will also mean an updated aesthetic and animation style.
Don't panic about these movies going anywhere, though, because the site adds that the plan is for the studio to continue producing animated features based on the DC Universe, including the planned Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
A number of familiar storylines have been adapted since Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox served as a reboot in 2013, including The Death of Superman, Throne of Atlantis, The Judas Contract, and Red Son. With any luck, that will continue moving forward, though original stories could become a priority based on what director Sam Liu recently told us.
Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is certainly shaping up to be an epic adventure as the Justice League, Teen Titans, Suicide Squad, Green Lantern Corps, and more will all assemble to take down Darkseid. The movie even boasts an impressive cast which includes names like Matt Ryan, Rosario Dawson, and Rebecca Romijn.
The movie is set to be released on Digital on May 5th and Blu-ray on May 19th.
