Tomorrowverse Producer Reveals Status Of Future DC Animated Movies Ahead Of DC Studios' Takeover (Exclusive)

DC Studios has its own plans for animated DC projects moving forward, but where does that leave the direct-to-DVD movies fans have come to love so much? Here's what the Tomorrowverse's Butch Lukic told us.

By JoshWilding - Jul 20, 2024 12:07 PM EST

Butch Lukic has been a fixture of the DC Animated Universe for decades and, in recent years, he's been overseeing the "Tomorrowverse" as an executive producer.

As a result, he's overseen all 10 of those direct-to-DVD features, starting with Superman: Man of Tomorrow and culminating with the recently released Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three. A great deal has changed since the former was released in 2020 and with DC Studios now looking to make a single, shared DCU, where does that leave these popular movies?

We asked Lukic about that earlier this week and he told us, "You never know. Right now, I couldn't say anything as far as what they want to do beyond these."

"Obviously, the James Gunn DC Universe is what's important right now; as far as anything to jump off of this stuff, I think it's very secondary," he explained, "so it's going to be more aligned to whatever the DCU is as James Gunn works it out."

While Watchmen is up next, it currently sounds like that might be it for these movies unless the plan is for them to continue under the "Elseworlds" banner. Normally at Comic-Con, we get a slate of animated DC projects for the following year, but don't be surprised if nothing is mentioned next weekend.

We also wondered how Lukic looks back at the Tomorrowverse and he confirmed that, even before DC Studios' formation, the plan was to tell a self-contained story over 10 movies.

"Well, originally, I wanted to do more than 10 movies which this ultimately was. I was hoping to keep things going and stretch things out so we could add more buildup for certain characters," he said. "It was decided that we'd get 10 movies and we'd need to get as much in there as we possibly could so they'd be cohesive."

"They gave us a 5-year plan which is what we did. We did it all in 5 years. 10 movies and the shorts. Originally, the previous universe was open-ended after 14, 15 years, but this time around, they wanted a definite start and a stop. And that's what we produced."

Check back here next week for the full interview with Butch, writer Jim Krieg, and stars Meg Donnelly and Elysia Rotaru.

Now fully revealed as the ultimate threat to existence, the Anti-Monitor wages an unrelenting attack on the surviving Earths that struggle for survival in a pocket universe. One by one, these worlds and all their inhabitants are vaporized! On the planets that remain, even time itself is shattered, and heroes from the past join the Justice League and their rag-tag allies against the epitome of evil. But as they make their last stand, will the sacrifice of the superheroes be enough to save us all?

Justice League Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three is produced by Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau and executive produced by Butch Lukic, Sam Register, and Michael Uslan. The film is directed by Jeff Wamester from a script by Jim Krieg. Casting and voice direction is by Wes Gleason.

The movie is now available on Digital platforms and arrives on 4K UHD in limited edition SteelBook packaging and Blu-ray on July 23.

that awful art style from the recent dc animated films needs to die.

@Godzilla2000Zer - I think it's important to do stand alone/elseworlds stories to keep things fresh and show people what could have been if things were different with our heroes.

How much more weight would it have had if it had been done with Bruce Timm and his cast, designs and Paul Dini

@dracula - What like writing the movie. Cause what would they have done in a small tiny scene?

@TheRogue - no, ditch the rushed tomorrowverse and use the universe that started it as the basis for Crisis

@lazlodaytona - They're not at all.

PLEASE, you, and EVERYONE, if you haven't already, embrace the One True Only God YHWH Jehovah, Only One Jesus Christ His Only Begotten Son and Lord and Savior of our souls and the Only One Holy Spirit. God is good. God is love. Jesus is Lord. Jesus IS coming. Your soul depends on it!

I have seen God act in my life. He saved my soul, changed my heart, changed my mind, helped people through me, took care of people in my life, people I hurt before I found God. God is the only reason I was able to reconcile with my dad before he died.

God worked through Jesus Christ to save our souls. Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and that God raised Him from the dead and you will be saved. Be baptized in The Holy Spirit, and if He wills, water as well. Repent of your sins, accept God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit into your heart, that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son Jesus Christ, that all who believe on Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father Jehovah God but through Him.

Not long after I got saved I prayed to God for help understanding the Holy Bible, and that same day someone knocked on my door asking me if I wanted to understand the Bible.

The Holy Bible says, "love thy enemy", "turn the other cheek", "If your enemy is hungry, feed him", "if he is thirsty, give him a drink", "pray for those who persecute you", "do not repay evil for evil".

LORD willing, all humans may commit sin of almost every kind (gay, straight), and that's wrong, and all humans sin, as God tells us through the The Holy Bible, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." The Holy Bible also says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

@dagenspear - dude, i believe in what you do.
I used the lower-case "god" because I don't worship them or believe they are the real God.

Relax bro.

I somewhat appreciate the sermon (it's nothing I haven't heard before so kudos for being a sheep of the faith). But your jumping off point from my post is almost manacle.

I believe in sharing the free gift of Jesus but bashing people over the head with the good book never works ... especially off a harmless post.

Tomorrowverse just felt boring compared to the New 52 era. At least those movies had some pretty good ones in the mix.

Feel like the Tomorrowverse was barely getting started and never really had anything standout.

They need to get back to better quality animation. My Adventures with Superman's animation is leagues better than these movies.

@Himura - I enjoyed the few such as Man of Tomorrow , GL and Justice Society that I saw to varying degrees but yeah , it just feels rushed from the outside looking in as someone who hasn’t even watched the rest.

I initially thought it was due to them rushing them out to make way for the DCU but it seems like it might been the highest up wanting a certain amount while Lukic wanted more so he could properly build which is unfortunate

@Himura - I like My Adventures with Superman a lot.
The animation is awesome; kinda a small cross between anime and American illustrations.

The only part I'm not big on is "Hughie" (from the Boys) being cast as Supes vocals. He just doesn't have the Superman dominant voice. Clark Kent he nails. But his Superman is just not great.

It fascinates me how you get interviews like this.

If you were a genuine reporter (or whatever you want to call it), then I'd 100% get it.

I mean, before he was outed as a scumbag, look at the clout and connections Harry Knowles had.

You though?

Your content on here is regularly riddled with errors (whether they're grammatical or factual), you've had unprofessional level obsessions with things (The Flash, Avi Arad, Taylor Swift), and your lists are repetitive (mainly due to you reposting them).

It's a genuine curiosity on my part.

Don't have much of an opinion on these movies, but have heard bad things.

While I haven’t seen the majority of the Tomorrowverse films , it’s unfortunate that they weren’t given much of a chance to grow…

It would have been great to continue to hear the cast they had assembled in these roles for a long while since they seemed to fit them perfectly with Jensen Ackles ,Darren Criss , Stana Katic , Jimmi Simpson ,Matt Bomer etc.
