Justice League Movie: A Better Suited And Often Overlooked Villain

In this article, I discuss who I think is best suited as the main villain of the first Justice League movie.

Recently we learned that Darkseid is in talks to be the main villain in the JLA movie. And while Darkseid IS often portrayed as the main villain for our league of justice, many fans aren't happy with this rumor. Most fans feel that Darkseid is too similar to Thanos, the speculated villain for the Avengers sequel. Some people think Darkseid requires more build up, or should be saved for the 2nd or 3rd JLA movie. And I'm here to say that I agree. I'm also here to suggest another villain, called the Anti-Monitor.



Although generally considered a villain of the Green Lanterns, the Anti-Monitor made his most popular appearance in the pages of the Justice League's 1985 limited series, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This was a very famous arc, considering the amount of DC characters that were killed during it (including the infamous death of Barry Allen, the second Flash).

The Anti-Monitor himself, is a being billions of year old. Along with unlimited cosmic powers, he holds the ability to devour entire universes. And that's where the Justice League comes in.

As for what he could give to the movie:

He's Different
The main problem people have with Darkseid, is that the Avengers could be facing off against Thanos, who is arguably a direct copy of Darkseid. And while Darkseid came first in the comics, Thanos came first on the big screen. Darkseid would also offer an alien invasion, something we already saw in The Avengers.

Anti-Monitor doesn't want to be your supreme ruler, he doesn't even want to rule the universe. All he wants is to eat you, for the cosmic power.

He Shows Just How Powerful The Justice League Are
Say what you want, but the Avengers and Justice League are nothing alike. The Justice League can almost be considered gods, in their respective universe. We've seen the Avengers face off against one god, but imagine seeing the JLA face off against someone with the power of 3 gods.

It Establishes The DC Universe
If the 2011 Green Lantern film is non-canon with the JLA movie, the Green Lantern Corps will need to be reintroduced into the universe, and what better way, than with a Green Lantern villain? The Crisis on Infinite Earths story line featured an ample amount of DC universe characters. And while many of these characters might not fit into the film, major ones CAN be introduced.


So these are my thoughts on who the villain should be in the Justice League movie. Leave a comment with your own thoughts, but remember to be respectful.

I still say Lobo. Although, the idea of him being an hired bounty hunter can work on a different level than what I had in mind. He provides a challenge for not only Superman but the rest as well. He's a solid pick for a villain for the debut Justice League film. Sure, in the comics he is more of an anti-hero but you can make changes to enhance a character or story and that's what you'd be doing with Lobo by making him a straight up villain. I feel it can work.

Lobo would b a terrible idea. There is some merit for the anti-monitor as it could help reignite gl but my preferance is for BRAINIAC

IF the good people at WB had planned it, working Brainiac into the end of Man of Steel would have been a great way to start the Justice League. He's powerful, but you can always step up with Darkseid or several other options. But they didn't. Because it would have been smart.

Well again, the issue with Anti-Monitor being a Justice League villian would be a certain planet eating Omni God by the name of Galactus.

I wouldn't mind seeing Darkseid if we can get the heroes on Apokolips.

Instead of having an alien invasion ala Avengers have Granny Goodness arrange a Contest of Champions for amusement of Darkseid. These heroes would all be out of their comfort zone and have to work together to get out.

Villians would be Furies, Bedlam, Kalibak, Goodness and Darkseid himself.

I think Tower of Babel should be saved till later movies so that the emotional betrayal can be even better. Plus, it can give the batman reboot enough time for it to establish a more fictional ras al ghul

Starro, people. The perfect starting villain should of been Starro. What better way to set the tone for the movie and how powerful the team is then have them face off against an eldritch abomination who mind rapes and sucks the like of every being. Save Darkseid for bigger sequels.

@Bam, Marvel is doing Thanos before Darkseid, which puts DC in a tough position. Why not do the same to Galactus?

The only reason I wouldn't use Starro is because people cannot relate to the Villain at all. I don't like overly sympathetic villains but there has to be a quality about them that makes the audience either admit that he/ she is a badass and wish they could do what they are doing or at least understand their motivation. Joker was not a sympathetic villain but everyone wanted know what he was going to do next. There was a cool factor about him that people could relate to. Starro would be another alien invasion except there would be no personality behind it. You would have to draw all the tension from the reactions of the heroes. Very cool villain but it would be hell to write a good movie based of it.

That Crisis cover is so amazing. Especially in the context of imagining it come to life on the big screen. I hope superhero movies can eventually be that epic. Like how I don't really need to see the entire origin of Firestorm or Black Lightning before I could enjoy seeing them in action. I know smaller is the safer way to go, but still there could be better use of secondary characters as a way for JL to differentiate itself. What if Justice League had more of that epic Star Wars feel?

Personally I think DC needs to just slow their britches, this MCU DC squabble is petty.

They have Superman and Batman two of the most respected and beloved superheroes ever, they had their turn and they've made some great movies, so just chill out for a while let Marvel do their thing and 20 years from now blow our minds with a Batman or Superman reboot.

Justice League is too overhyped, way more than the avengers ever was, right out the bat like that is stupid and wreckless.

Again this movie isn't coming out 2015 or anytime soon. Idk why you people keep going on about this JL as if its actually about to go down, when their really has been no official word on it.
Avengers did something on may 5. It created too much hope for the Dc fan base

I'm with Hodor here, completely.

Brainiac is the answer to that question of "Who is a greater vilain than Darkseid.?"Darkseid is a unsurmountable foe that could, would, and should bring the Justice League together, BUT Brainiac is in a lot of way a more frightening foe because for him its not a moral conquest. Darkseid is a conquerer. Brainiac is the Terminators times a million. If The Terminator could and has been used for the forces of good, and we liked it, Brainiac is that fear perpetuated to the point that it can not be redeemed, or used for good.Brainiac is our own fears used against us. While Darkseid is the fears we have always known put to a galactic scale

That being said, yes, I understand Brainiac 5 is the representation of Arnolds Terminator 2 T-800, but thats the thing...use what what works. Establish Brainiac as the ultimate villain and introduce Brainiac 5 and the rest of the Legion later.
