2 GUNS, KICK-ASS 2 And THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN Get New Release Dates

Universal have made some notable changes to their 2013 comic book movie slate as R.I.P.D. gets a 3D conversion, 2 Guns is moved ahead by a couple of weeks and Kick-Ass 2 is pushed back by nearly two months. The third and final The Hobbit movie has also been moved to December 2014!

Deadline reports that Universal are now planning on releasing R.I.P.D. in 3D. The adaptation of the Dark Horse comic book series stars Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges, and keeps its release date of July 19th, 2013. Denzel Washington will now be seen in 2 Guns two weeks early as it opens on August 2nd, 2013 instead of the previously slated August 16th, 2013. Unfortunately, Jeff Wadlow's big screen take on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s Kick-Ass 2 has been delayed from June 28th, 2013 to August 16th, 2013. That takes it a good distance away from Warner Bros.' Man of Steel. Talking of the studio, Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: There and Back Again will now be released on December 17th, 2014. It had previously been slotted in for a July 18th, 2014 debut, but that would have meant it clashed with X-Men: Days of Future Past. Sound off with your thoughts below!

Shame about the Hobbit and Kick Ass being moved back, but I guess this means that the Rock's Hercules flick may actually get some money now.

Well, that means DOFP will have no excuse if it fails...

I said it couple of days ago!!

Hobbit got to be in December... & also to let X:Men live!!
I mean it would've squashed X:Men - DOFP ... Come What may; however great that Film will be!

Now, Singer can breathe easily... & so does X:Men... Good for us fans too!!

Now lets take Man Of Steel to 1 Billion as well!
I'm sure (hopefully) it'll get there!!

Looks like the big CBMs are getting some respectful distance from any would-be contenders... and after all the buzz about Man of Steel and X-Men: DoFP, they should. But I'm glad they aren't delaying R.I.P.D. any more-- that film has taken an ETERNITY to get released.

Incidentally, I'm thinking Kick-Ass 2 may be a bit of a letdown. I wasn't questioning it too much at first, but the more I think about it, all the signs are there: a switch to a more mainstream studio, the loss of the original director AND writer, their subsequent replacement by a director whose biggest claims to fame thus far are a mediocre horror movie and one of the hundreds of shitty low-brow fighting movies Hollywood seems to be spewing out recently.

I could be wrong, but especially considering this delay, I've got a bad feeling about this...

@imadick: Which is, of course, why they moved it. Because God knows movie studios aren't competitive or anything...

It certainly would've seemed odd seeing The Hobbit during the summer, but the wait will be murder.

@imadick: Fair enough. But personally (and yes, I actually think this and am not just saying it to piss either yourself or others off), I think the third Hobbit is going to be terrible, because Peter Jackson just cannot get it through his thick skull that MORE does not necessarily mean BETTER.

ONE BOOK did not need to be turned into THREE FILMS. I think the lackluster quality of the storytelling in the first film (not the SPECIAL EFFECTS, the PRODUCTION VALUES, or the ACTING, mind you, but the storytelling) is proof enough of that, and I will not be surprised if the subsequent films bear that out.

(Though of course, all the Star Wars prequels were terrible, and look how much money THEY made. I guess money doesn't equal quality anyway-- which makes this entire discussion basically pointless, since you were only talking about the film making money.)

(Then again, there's always the possibility that The Hobbit will suffer the same fate as the Matrix sequels, and that enthusiasm will wane so badly by the third film that it WON'T make a bajillion dollars. Who knows?)

@Thefox Mathew Vaughn is still producing it, but yeah it's alot less direct control over it. Heard he was still on set however, so it's not like it's just his name on it.

Another question to ask is what will WB put out in its 2014 summer slate besides Godzilla now that the third Hobbit film has moved to december?

WB doesn't seem to have a CBM planned until 2015 when Justice League may be released.(I think WB will put out Man of Steel 2 in 2015 instead)

Maybe Mad Max Fury Road gets a summer slot along side the David Yates Tarzan film as WB's summer lineup with Godzilla.

Just had another thought.WB could be leaving room for Nolan's upcoming SCI-FI film Intersteller to make the summer roster.

The Avengers/TDKR box office fear.

When they came out, they dominated the box office for a month. Man of Steel and Monster's U will be fighting for number 1 until Despicable Me comes out in July 3...

@Dudeposter: Interesting... so that a good sign, at least. But I'm still worried by the fact that the guy who's actually in charge of MAKING the movie is so untested. Remember, Tim Burton may have produced Batman Forever, but it was still clearly a Joel Schumacher film...
