From Hitgirl To Vampgirl: Chloe Moretz Talks Let Me In

Fresh from stealing the show as Hitgirl in Kick-Ass, Moretz spoke at Wondercon about starring in the controversial remake of Swedish Vampire movie, Let The Right One In...

There was a mixed reaction(thats putting it mildly) when it was announced that Cloverfield director Matt Reeves would be remaking the movie for American audiences and inexplicably retitling it at the same time. But since that, he has assembled a very impressive cast which includes Moretz, The Road's Kodi Smit Mcphee, Richard Jenkins and Elias Koteas. He has also addressed the concerns from the fans of the original and promised that his movie would not be just a straight remake made more palatable for U.S movie goers, but a fresh take on the original's source novel.

Of course, no trailer has been released as of yet to give us an idea if he's on the level or not, but Chloe Moretz put her 2 cents in at Wondercon on Saturday...

"It's definitely a lot like the original, but Matt Reeves, Kodi Smit-McPhee and I, we definitely brought our own aspect to it. I hope you guys like it."

"It was really cool," Moretz said of playing Abby(previously Ellie). "It was fun portraying a vampire. The face of a vampire that people don't really see. You know? It's the side of a vampire that's usually hidden. They don't show it. It's always this cold figure that people always draw themselves to for no apparent reason. And this girl that I play is much darker. She's dirty. She doesn't really bathe that much. She's not glamorous. She's just a girl that no one could care less about."

Moretz, still just 13, has not seen the original all the way through.."I wasn't allowed to see the whole thing," she said.

The fact that they are keeping Abby grimy and unwashed is a good sign. I really though we might be getting Twilight for tweens with this one. Although,... MAJOR SPOILER FROM THE NOVEL....from her comments she seems to have played Abby as a girl, and anyone that has read the book or seen the original movie(to a lesser extent..its only hinted at) knows, Abby is not a girl at all!. Anyway, she may of course just keeping everything as hush hush as possible, but even if they lose the gender ambiguity, I'm still liking the sounds of this particular remake..so far!

Let Me In will be released in theaters on Oct. 1. Let the Right One In is available on DVD and Blu-ray. Kick-Ass opens in theaters April 16(Stateside at least;)

I loved the Original! I'm wish they didn't remake this but this is good news i suppose. Just dont want it to be full of cheap scares.

the original was ok... couldve been better, but i liked how they made the vampire a young girl until she got hungry and then looked old and creepy.

chloe is awesome! so much older than her years. cant wait to see kick-ass!!

@Hela: If you think the original was only "OK" you have to watch it again. It's one of those movies that get better every time you see it. The direction was phenomenal. American film-makers can learn a lot from that movie.

Ambiguity's good. I like that. I like that alot. :P

@TheQuestion i think the reason i thought it was ok was that i saw it dubbed, rather than subtitled and the voices they used to dub the film were awful and at times unbearable. i hate watching dubbed films... if i can get it subtitled i will indeed watch it again.

"gender ambiguity"? Are you saying she was a guy in the original film? If so your way off dude. She was an old woman not a guy. They even show her as the old woman for like one second in the movie

The original was awesome. Hope they don't muck it up.

Go back and watch it again, or go read the book. They show her as an old..creature for a split second because thats how she would look now if she wasn't a vampire. Are you saying that she was really an old woman when she was bitten but reverted back to child form or something? Like I said, go back and do some research...SPOILER ALERT.... Ellie was a little boy that was castrated and turned into a vampire thus losing his actual sex..he/she simply became a creature, neither boy or girl, but it was easier for him/her to pass off as a girl to attract pedophile protectors.

Is anybody dying to see more 12 year old vampina? For the record, I'm not.
RemiMartini
RemiMartini - 4/6/2010, 10:19 AM
never mind I just checked Wikipedia. The vampire is a castrated little boy. However it's not TOTALLY made clear in the film, but is implied. Sorry. my bad
RemiMartini
RemiMartini - 4/6/2010, 10:21 AM
They even had a little boy dub over the girls voice, which I didn't notice before.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 4/6/2010, 10:22 AM
No worries, like I said, its only hinted at in the film..but then after you read the book those hints become clearer. I doubt they will keep that in the remake anyway, I can't see Hollywood green lighting a movie about a teenage, transexual vampire and his male love interest!
HelaGood
HelaGood - 4/6/2010, 10:25 AM
i think its more than hinted at in the film, because the boy sees the "girl" naked and sees the castration scar.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 4/6/2010, 10:28 AM
Yeah I know but I think many people confused that for a "vampina" like backdoor up there:)

I hope they do something much different because the original can't really be remade. Much of what made the movie work so well was its Swedish setting.

I really don't see a remake living up to the original. It sounds like they're going to wash out all the great subtleties of the original and replace it with something more conventional.
HelaGood
HelaGood - 4/6/2010, 10:39 AM
@Ror i doubt hollywood will put that bit in the film. i think they will play it safe and make the film a PG-13 and she will be a straight up little girl.

Still a little unsure about this remake. The original is an amazing film , so this "reimagining" has some big shoes to fill.

For those interested, I did a review for this film last fall. Click here to read it!

love the few second clips of her being old and nasty! 2 scenes if im correct? but yeah they didnt really retitle the movie.. the original translation of the book is "let me in" so u cant take away from it for that..
@hela yeah i own the dubbed version nad the voice overs are TERRIBLE i wish it came with a subtitled option. But other than that its an amazing movie and even though its really a shit move by hollywood, im still pumped to see how it turns out!

Ror & Hela

I don't think the remake will play out as well with the vampire being a straight up little girl. You don't really get what's going on in the beginning when Oliver asks if she'll be his girlfriend, she keeps saying "I'm not a girl." You think she is saying that because she is a vampire... that is, until you see the scar. The look on Oliver's face when he sees it is priceless. Amazing movie, sadly, another Hollywood remake that will no doubt fall short.

Also Hela, when you watch the dubbed version (at least this happened to me the first time I saw it) all the notes were subtitled in German. I just had an internet copy from a friend, so I was at the mercy of the copy I had. Screaming at the TV like a jackass "What the fk does the letter say!!"

MarkCassidy - 4/6/2010, 10:59 AM
Oh really? I didn't know that. I just always liked the meaning behind Let The Right One In in the context of the film, but I guess if they are only following direct translation then I can't complain.

If you watch a foreign film dubbed you are really not seeing the film properly imo. So much is lost in translation and edited to better fit lip synchs. Your also hearing other actors voices which totally takes away from the original performances..Hell I even hate watching manga dubbed!
BillyBlack
BillyBlack - 4/6/2010, 11:10 AM
I totally agree Ror.

I bought the movie 20 mins after finishing the dubbed version I borrowed. Didn't quite ruin it for me, thanks to an incredibly strong story. I felt the same way when they re-released AKIRA, and it had that horrible re-dubbing calling him "Canada". Just terrible.
HelaGood
HelaGood - 4/6/2010, 11:14 AM
i agree as well. i hate the way they rush through lines and dont give them any hint of emotion when they dub films. and the space fillers they use like the constant "MMMMMM"s or GASPs. i was so pissed when i realized it was dubbed.
blankofthedead
blankofthedead - 4/6/2010, 11:37 AM
my problem with the dubbed version is all the voices were too similar, and jsut terribly annoying voices.. but itsn the books title "let me in" i heard that the original movie is the one that changed the title

Well yeah, but its marketed towards teens and young adults, they just don't do a very good marketing job because most people above the age of 12 hate it!

haha, yeah Billy that was painful to watch, If i had of caught the dubbed Akira before the subtitled one I wouldn't have got what all the fuss was about. We had the dude that voiced Leonardo in the Turtles cartoon voicing Canada!

Lee, what are you on about?

This movie is gonna suck. Why remake an already good movie. What just because it's not in english. Next thing you know they'll remake Pan's Labyrinth.
blankofthedead
blankofthedead - 4/6/2010, 1:08 PM
@mativ16- hollywood thinks its superior to everything and everyone, so once a foreign film receives a lot of attention it needs to remake it and put its own amercian touch on it. That being said im pretty pumped for this haha
BACKDOORCHIJAD
BACKDOORCHIJAD - 4/6/2010, 1:26 PM
I agree with mativ16 that this shouldn't be remade, b/c I think we'll see a watered down version. Although I guess it also depends on who is remaking it. When I think of a little film called The Departed, that little remake was to say the least well done.

@ror: i agree with you, i hate dubbed films. i tried watching Oldboy dubbed, and i couldnt even get past the first 4 sentences said cuz it seemed so off and mismatched. anime on the other hand, i can handle, i mean cuz they can atleast change the way the mouths move so it actually seems like the characters are actually speaking english. plus with live-action, putting a voice over another person is wierd as hell, it never fits. but with anime, its easier cuz its an animated person, that could possibly sound perfectly with multiple voices

The controversy over Chloe's character reminds me of what people were saying about The Professional when that came out in America.

Maybe Moretz will turn out to be the next Portman...
