This reminds me of the stink people made over Gabriel Damon in Robocop 2. Movies are escapist entertainment, not reality. Seeing as kids are much more foul-mouthed in reality than on-screen anyhow.

Apart from a few objections from very predictable sources (i.e. The Daily Mail), there actually hasn't been much controversy - in the UK at least. And it's been out for two weeks here. Even normally reactionary rags like The Sun, Daily Mirror and News of the World have all given it 5 star ratings and are heaping praise on it as being funny, original, inventive and just all round awesome.

The broadsheets are all giving it rave reviews (in fact, pretty much everyone is) - even snobby reviewers like Mark Kermode love it and think the fuss misses the point and sheer fun of it. There has been some mild surprise that the film has been rated 15 in the UK rather than 18, but again, reviewers are generally coming down in favour of the BBFC's decision and the intelligence - and common sense - in their reasoning (all of which is fully stated on the BBFC's website).

I don't know if it'll be much different in the States, but here at least, the controversy hasn't harmed the film at all. Quite the opposite I'd say.

It's only said once. And it works. Like a cinematic slap in the face. You know you ain't in safe-studio-fare Kansas any more, Dorothy.

Apparently the people bitching forgot about Exorcist when the little girl is stabbing her who-ha with a cross screaming "F^ck me! F^ck me!" Yeah, that shit was f^cked up, still a great movie though.

It's just a film. The script was made with adult content, which was approved by the studio, and filmed with actors and actresses who read the script, and were comfortable enough with the script to act in the film.

The same goes with Chloe Moretz. She read the script, and conversed with her family about taking the part, and they were just as tolerant of her playing the role as she was.

It's no different than when Jodie Foster played Iris in Taxi Drver, or when Sue Lyon played the title character in Lolita.

seriously, its a movie! and she's awesome! theyre just jealous because of the way she can handle a gun.

and yeah, like so many of you pointed out, this is nothing new. jane goldman's point about the role reversal of the kids becoming the perp rather than the victim is solid. so if people arent happy with kids being victims or perps, where does that leave them? as window dressing? geez... move on...

Exactly Keven! I bet all these overly sensitive people are also into book burning.

you people crack me up. your all about well its free speech and just a movie, but when people exercise thier free speech and criticize the movie you jump all over them. yes its just a movie and they shouldnt be advocating that people not see it. however as a parent i do not think children should talk this way and my daughter will not or she'll be in pretty big trouble. people who say "real children say worse things than that" does that make it right? would you want your children to say it? no didnt think so. and when the fck was the last time you heard of a book burning? quit makin shit up.

Holy crap superdog did you shit out tinfoil or something? It's called a joke, obviously book burning isn't as prevalent today as it was during the NAZI party but damn it's called sarcasm, look into it.

And yes, I wouldn't want my kid spitting out that kind of language, and yes everyone is entitled to the freedom of speech just like we're entitled to respond to said statements and make opinions on that matter.

So don't get all, "Hey they have a right to speak their mind damn it!" crap, because we do too and for that fact we all know we agree to disagree and we all know that people have different feelings and thoughts on the matter, but f^cking Christ it's not like kid's in movies spitting out bad language is anything new in our culture. Take a chill pill and f^cking relax.

You don't want your kid drop C bombs, more power to you! But don't get all pissy because some of us think that people bitching about a 12 year old cursing in a rated R movie is a little ridiculous.

superdog - 4/7/2010, 12:23 PM
damn dudes, i was just making a point. i dont believe i disparaged anyone in my post. i was just stating my opinion, and now im getting jumped on just like the people who criticized the movie. i didnt get bitchy. i just find it to be funny and somewhat hipocritical thats all. and i didnt get the sarcasm in the book burning statement. for that i apologize.

keven@ what does a chick have to do with anything? and no im not a racist. in fact i like all people except people with glasses.

just wanted to clear something up. i just reread my post to make sure i wasnt missing something. i discovered that my post said "and they SHOULD be advocating people not see it". i apologize that is a scrivners error. what i meant to say was they should NOT be advocating people not to see it. i never support advocating not seeing a movie. people should see what ever they want and make up thier own minds. i will be seeing it opening day. i never advocate book burning, movie skipping, or censorship of any kind. i have corrected the error in my post.

It's all good superdog, just seemed like you were being overly defensive. Sorry for jumping on you, I figured the fact I brought up book burning was enough for the sarcasm, some things just don't translate well in text format. And I believe Keven was joking too, calling you a chick and just randomly calling you racist. Basically we were busting balls man.

I got your point, but like I said, if you criticize something, or post a personal opinion you're going to get opposite thoughts. That's just how the cookie crumbles. So yeah you got jumped on, because we disagree and want to post our side and ideas opposite to yours. Freedom of speech for everyone! Yaaaaaay!
superdog
superdog - 4/7/2010, 12:42 PM
i agree. freedom of speech for all. i enjoy adult debate, but the harshness has gotten real high around here so im always on the alert and get over jumpy. and i know keven was joking, thats why i made fun of his glasses :)

@superdog - Actually, groups still burn books. A Harry Potter book burning way back in 2001 over witch-craft or some stupid shit.

People who campaign to control what should and shouldn't be said or seen is tantamount to fascism. And if we as a people wanted to be told what think, say and see then we would have rolled over long ago and let Nazi Germany win.
superdog
superdog - 4/7/2010, 1:07 PM
Weapon@ agreed, people shouldn't tell people what to see or do. But we also shouldn't tell people what to say or protest, no matter how stupid what they say may be. Supressing them would be just as fascist. And besides I have no problem with people burning those fcking Harry potter books. They should throw the fcking twilight books right on top. :)

I don't like any profanity, but I agree everyone has a right to say whatever they want. It's just a sign of bad character, and obviously that's part of the point of Chloe's character. She has been corrupted in response to a corrupt world.
Stumblin
Stumblin - 4/7/2010, 1:14 PM
Well I'd have to disagree with you fanboiii, if what you said is true then George Carlin apparently has bad character. Cursing is hardly enough to judge one's character, that's like the old saying judging a book by its cover.
