In news that surely solidifies the chances of the sequel (which is set to be called Kick-Ass 2: Balls To The Wall) coming out in the next couple of years, Lionsgate have announced the success of the DVD and blu-ray release in the following statement.

Just like its title character, the DVD, Blu-ray and digital download debut of Kick-Ass did not need any superpowers to take down the competition on the weekly charts as it proved dominant across all revenue channels this past week. Released by Lionsgate®, the leading next generation studio, Kick-Ass has debuted number one on the DVD sales chart. The Blu-ray combo pack of the film (three discs- including Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy), also debuted at number one. In addition, the release came out of its first weekend as the top movie download on the iTunes store, Zune and Sony/Playstation and achieved the biggest digital week performance ever by a Lionsgate title.

Kick-Ass, which grossed nearly $50 million domestically and $100 million worldwide during its theatrical run, also achieved the highest box office-to-DVD conversion rate for all major DVD releases this quarter, helping Lionsgate to maintain their industry leadership in box office-to-DVD conversion. Lionsgate also had the top two converting titles last quarter for films over $10 million box office with From Paris With Love and Daybreakers.

"Kick-Ass is truly one of the most unique, entertaining, and action-packed movies of the year," said Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate General Manager and Executive Vice President. "With its strong word-of-mouth, we felt confident that it would have a powerful home entertainment debut and are particularly pleased with the success of the Blu-ray combo pack, which accounted for 42% of week one sell-through revenue."

Kick-Ass is obviously out now in the US and is set to be released in the UK on September 7th.

I don't see why this movie got such great reviews, on the stand point of being like the book, it was barely the same. The whole tone and characterization was wrong, the personalities, the dialogue was just watered down in the movie. Big Daddy's death and the way Hit Girl handled her emotions had a much bigger impact in the book, and she actually seemed to revert back to being 10 years old hugging Kick-Ass after going on a killing spree to avenge her father. In the movie it was like it hardly phased her, she just moved on and continued being super bad ass regardless of the fact she's 10.

As a stand alone movie it was still pretty bad, yeah I was entertained with the action but the acting was pretty crappy. Nicholas Cage butchered his character, I'm sorry but you're not an actor if I can tell you're acting. I didn't believe he was his character at all.

I'm just glad I didn't see this in theaters this movie was just a waste of time for me, I really looked forward to it but it was a complete let down. I for one will not be seeing the sequel but I will be buying the next book volume.

Stumblin: I think the changes you mention were down to the fact that they wrote the script before the comic book was finished. Some of them I liked but the majority (the jet pack for example) I didnt. However, I still thought it was a fantastic movie and I'm really looking forward to when it's released here in the UK so I can watch it again! :P

I finally saw it. I rented it on iTunes and I liked it. My only problem with the movie that it felt too short. I hope the sequel is longer.

i really don't understand how some people can really complain too much bout this movie. i mean at least it didnt come out something like all the other CBMs for example ghost rider, wolverine borigins etc.
and the comic itself has its let-down.

Stumblin@ you need to realize that you have to cut things down and change things in the overall story to fit it into a 2 hour movie. you will never get a word for word scene for scene adaptation of a book. it just won't ever happen. you have to change things to appeal to a wider audience. not everyone who saw this movie read the comic but they loved it regardless. you have to have an open mind if you're going to enjoy these movies. if not, you're just going to be pissed off and disappointed.

aaaaaand ppl were saying that this flick wasn't that successful and the sequel will go straight to DVD hahaaa love it! Can't wait for B2TW! :D

@deadpool hahaa right with ya dude! Loved Kick-Ass & IM2 was more like Tony being prepped for The Avengers than his own flick, still enjoyed it alot though! Nah, you kiddin' me? RR is too busy filming GL 2-10 and won't be available for any other acting position until WB is done with him ;P (sense my sarcasm yet??) haha

@Taboo that's cold! I thought every woman by default was in love with RR? haha

@Mass indeed. :D

@Ron dude. go buy it. now. haha you'll love it! :D

@JoshW well said man! @Stumblin what Josh said dude!

I haven't read the whole series, just flipped through it, but I was under the impression that it wouldn't have flown if translated exactly. Just too hard core. Don't we see Big Daddy get his brains blown out and Hitgirl take crack right before the last fight and torch a bunch of people with a flamethrower?

Kick Ass is in my top five best CBM's ever. It's good to see that its DVD sales are starting off strong. Hopefully, many of those who missed this excellent movie at the theaters will see it now.

I'm certainly looking forward to a sequel!
GLFanboy
GLFanboy - 8/12/2010, 10:18 AM
@JoshW Totally! This thing had a movie deal before the comic was even written. Book to Film comparisons are almost irrelevant. It was always intended to be a film from the get go. The book, as enjoyable as it is, doesn't really matter in this particular instance. Just my opinion.
GLFanboy
GLFanboy - 8/12/2010, 10:20 AM
Also I don't know if anyone will agree with me (probably not) but I think this movie showed that the character Robin could work on film and be believable. If Hitgirl can kick ass. So can Robin! Let the bashing of me begin.
AUTISTICSPIDER
AUTISTICSPIDER - 8/12/2010, 10:21 AM
So I have no idea at all what the comic book is like, I havent even heard of kickass until the movie came out. So I can say this as a nonfanboy watcher, it was a good movie. It started off good and ended strongly, and I for one really rnjoyed nocholas cages performance. It didnt seem like he was acting to me, it seemed like he was a semi psychotic old fashioned father. Though keep in mind that I have never read the comic.
AUTISTICSPIDER
AUTISTICSPIDER - 8/12/2010, 10:25 AM
GLFanboy@ I think your right, no bashing. This completely showed that they could make Robin work. But only if they made his character more of a baddass and less of a cheesy guy with a lame costume. I whole heartedly agree that it could work. :)
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 8/12/2010, 10:25 AM
Ditto to AUTISTICSPIDER.

GLFanboy - guess the real question is would you accept a character like Hitgirl in Nolan's Batman universe?
GLFanboy
GLFanboy - 8/12/2010, 10:34 AM
@Mass not exactly, no. But from a physical point of view yes. It has been said many times that seeing a little kid kicking an adults ass wouldn't be believable on film. Did you ever doubt for a second that hitgirl was kicking those guys' collective asses? It worked. Now of course her specific character was also enjoyable based on touches of irony, satire and comedy and of course those attributes would not translate into Nolan's Batman but combine the believability displayed by Hitgirl with what Nolan could do story-wise and character-wise with Dick Grayson and I think you could have a Robin that fans and sceptics alike could respect and enjoy.
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 8/12/2010, 10:39 AM
GLFanboy - Could be, could be, but remember, one of the reasons we could believe Hitgirl could handle all those guys is because we knew she was going to use guns and knives to KILL them. Robin, not so. When Hitgirl was finally in a hand to hand fight with an adult, she failed. Making Robin older would help, but still.
conformist21
conformist21 - 8/12/2010, 10:48 AM
i expected it and it's well deserved,
big daddy's death was handled better and i missed hit-girl doing cocaine, should've done it.
only flaw was really the jetpack, even though i wouldn't have wanted him to end up with the girl, it made the internet feed that much more impactive
GLFanboy
GLFanboy - 8/12/2010, 10:48 AM
@Mass That's a very valid point. Of course that doesn't mean Robin couldn't use weapons and gadgets (he does in the comics), they just wouldn't be lethal. However, I also think that the realism of a child/teenager getting into losing situations like you mentioned could be something that could be integrated into the story and would heighten the believability. Let Robin get his ass kicked once in a while. Let that reality play a part in Batman's conflicted decision to instruct him.
Of course, I'm not trying to write the script here I just think that it could be done and done well. Probably a moot point though since I don't think Nolan has any interest in the character.
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 8/12/2010, 10:54 AM
@GLFanboy - I think your right, and I think Nolan had darn well better thing about using the character, if he is thinking of "killing" Batman as some fans suspect. Without Batman Gotham is SCREWED unless someone can take his place.
GLFanboy
GLFanboy - 8/12/2010, 11:02 AM
@Mass hmmm. I guess I wasn't aware that there were fan rumors about Nolan killing Bats. Interesting. Are they based on anything specific or is it just wild speculation?
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 8/12/2010, 11:11 AM
@GLFanboy - just speculation based on his statement on how he is going to end the trilogy. I don't think he'll do it. I was just making a "what if" statement.

Stumblin

Brashlight, I wasn't looking for a complete verbatim from the comic, but I was looking for something that had a little more emotion to it. This movie was empty it didn't have any real pull, I didn't care about the characters, I didn't care about Big Daddy dieing it didn't matter. Big Daddy's character was a joke in the movie, Cage way over acted the part and just made him overly campy which personally I didn't think fit the character or even keep true to the book itself.

Like I said before, just watching it as a movie and not an adaptation it still sucked. It had terrible dialogue, the acting was pretty bad except for Kick-Ass he did a pretty damn good job as well as Hit Girl though she was a little one dimension too like the other characters. The cinematography was flippin' amazing though, the music score, sound effects were all spot on. It's the actors and writing that hurt this movie, it was just mediocre. Definitely belongs in the top 20 CBM's but hardly a top 5.

I guess this is just one of those things where the book is most certainly better than the movie.

Joshw, good point, I forgot that they wrote the movie before the book was even done, maybe that's why it just didn't fit right.

Got it on the PSN the day it came out, and am currently trying to get it on blu-ray (almost every copy here in Mobile got snapped up as soon as it arrived). This movie is pretty, well...Kick Ass.

@ GL Fanboy: Hell yes, a decent Robin movie would be awesome! While you're at it, how 'bout a good Teen Titans flick, eh?

@ RockNRollCC: Good god, I hope so! I'd hate to see a good movie get the crapper simply because of low Box Office gross...and crapper-worthy movies get a sequel, simply because a lot of dolts went out and spent money to see it in theaters.

@ conformist21: Well said, chief. Yeah, the 'good guy always gets the girl' can get a bit monotonous, but you're right...that scene definately hit harder because of it. Cocaine? C'mon, though...we got little Chloe dropping f*- and c*-bombs left and right...did we really need the snowskiing? (although, it would have been REALLY cool...)
