The Empire awards are always a bit special because the nominees and winners are decided by the public. As a result, great films like Kick-Ass, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World and Inception, largely ignored by other award shows, can get the recognition they deserve. Of course it can also allow for stinkers like A Nightmare On Elm St to slip in there too!

Kick-Ass has picked up six nominations. 'Best Film', 'Best British Film', 'Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy' and 'Best Director', along with 'Best Actor' and 'Best Newcomer' nods for stars Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz, respectively.

The King's Speech, Inception, The Social Network and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World are also nominated in the 'Best Film' category.

WTF is Monsters doing on that list? It was utter crap.

@Intruder: Kick-Ass was a [frick]ing brilliant movie, acclaimed by critics and audience alike (76%/83% on RT). You are a fool and/or completely out of touch.

Keith, agree 100% on both counts! Monsters was a piece of pretentious rubbish imo. It was loved by the critics though. I suppose it was a technically great achievement for such a small budget, and there script was good. But the actors had zero chemistry and the message was hammered home too much.

And Kick-Ass obviously ruled. But you gotta cut Intruder some slack, he liked films like Hidalgo after all:)

I think Intruder should be up for an award "Muppet of the year"

@Ror: Actually, saying that Monsters had a "good script" is pretty funny - they didn't have one at all (truth, not just being critical). :) And it shows.

Was it completely improvised? I didn't know that. I actually liked the overall dialog. With better actors and less silly attempts at being all "deep" it could have been decent.

Intruder, no, it wasn't. It really really wasn't!

@Ror: Not completely improvised, but pretty much made up and written as they went along. He said he went to South America with his camera and crew, with a vague idea of the start and ending, and pretty much made the rest up as they were shooting, depending on where they were, what was happening and so on. It may have sounded 'naturalistic' (generously) because they'd literally just come up with it and, for me, it looked that way. The actors weren't terrible in their delivery, but what they were delivering was often complete and utter rubbish. All it did for me is highlight that a good script (with small things like the story, character development and internal logic worked out in advance) is rather important.

If I were Gareth Edwards (the director) I'd actually be a little bit insulted by the favourable critic reviews it had - to me it seems they were reviewing the budget and not the film - kinda "well done" because his boring home video looked good for so little money. Almost like patting a retarded film-student on the head for making a finished film at all, regardless of whether said film was awful or not.

Btw - I used the exact same phrase as you in a review I wrote for it elsewhere - "zero chemistry" - and for a supposed "love story" I'd say that was a fairly vital ingredient missing.

Don't be fooled by the title people - there are NO monsters in it (their excuse - the 'monsters' are US! As Ror said - heavy handed and imo plain lame), apart from two ridiculous looking gigantic aliens, on stilts, with tentacles, at the end (literally in the last five minutes) who just keen to each other like love-sick sperm whales. NOTHING else of note happens in the entire movie. And if that isn't bad enough, what DOES happen makes no sense (why not call rich daddy and book a private jet for example? The dude sleeping with a hooker and getting all their money stolen and instead of just [frick]ing him off right there and then and finding someone with half a brain to get her home, she just blindly keeps following and, despite the fact that the guy is a total wanker, eventually falls in love with him. Or, as it seems in the movie, goes from hating to loving him just because time's a ticking and, well, they HAVE to fall in love by the end, right? Getting out of the boat to investigate noises in the jungle and asking "what's that noise?" - DID THE SIGNS EVERYWHERE SAYING "DANGER: MONSTERS!!!" NOT GIVE YOU A CLUE!? + more idiotic stuff like that throughout. And soooo boring!). Yeah. Hated it. :)

Kick Ass was an excellent movie that made my personal top 10 comic movies ever. I'd love to see it win some of these awards. I've made it my mission to show this film to all comic fans that I know that missed it in the theaters, and so far, all of them have agreed about the brilliance of this film.
