Kick-Ass Underperforms Friday But Takes Top Spot at the Box Office

With $7.5 million on its first day of release Kick-Ass claims the Top spot and puts it on track for a $20 million opening weekend.

Although Kick-Ass will win the top spot for movies this weekend it will still come in under expectations. Lionsgate was hoping for upwards of a $30 million opening weekend. With the good reviews it has been getting, for the most part, it should have legs to last until Iron Man 2 opens in a couple weeks.

The top 5 movies for friday:
1. Kick-Ass
2. Death at a Funeral
3. Date Night
4. Clash of the Titans
5. How to Train Your Dragon

HammerGod: I have seen 2 of the top 5 and plan on adding Kick-Ass to that list sometime this week.

R-rated movies have a little more trouble making big numbers because they restrict the most people from seeing them. I think it's doing respectably and will do impressive numbers in the end.

I hope this movie does well, but I seriously have my doubts. Middle america isn't into this sort of stuff. They prefer CGI PG-13 films

@grif it made 7.5 million on friday it is PROJECTED to make 20 million for the weekend.

Still it should turn a profit in America in 2 or 3 weeks depending on advertising budget.

There comparing it to snakes on a plane (not content wise), but saying that it's a r movie with huge Internet and fanboy buzz but doesn't translate to box office. The movie is a hard sell, kind of like watchmen. Your average non comicbook person has never heard of it and doesn't understand the concept, and has no big name director or actors (sans niic cage) It doesn't have anything to do with middle America not liking the violence etc...violent R movies make lots of money (Hannibal,300, the departed) So do r rated non violent movies (the hangover anyone?) this movie is just hard to market. It will make a profit for sure cause the budget was so low. But won't sizzle up the box office.

its like shawshank redemption, loved by critics but bombed at the B.O. same as ED WOOD by Burton. Masterpieces aren't always the blockbusters they were advertised to be. I'm sure it will make it's money back

Great Movie,I seen it today. All I can say IMO I found the movie to be wayyy better than the Graphic Novel. Hitgirl really really does steals this movie away from Kick-Ass IMO.

@tdkr11, I so agree, this felt much more whole than the comic. So much change for the better. Do you guys think this film will make hitgirl into a loli icon?(and Im not into that btw, just a curious question) Its gotta do great in Japan, it reminds me of Ichi the Killer

It's not playing where I live, isn't that some bullshit or what. I have to drive 45 minutes to see it playing in another city. I'm pissed about it.

saw it today and loved every minute of it!!! one thing that may be hurting it is i heard that carmike cinemas are not plasying kick-ass, i know that may not be a huge contributor but that is one less theatre.

I am the only one that thought the movie was a giant piece of crap!? I loved the comic but they butchered the source material with tons of re-writes and plot changes. The scene where Big Daddy dies completely sucked and the whole ending was complete garbage with the flying jet pack and them flying into the sunset. Even the special effects where complete cheese. Sorry but don't believe the hype. The trailers make this movie look awesome and like it stays true to the source material but those trailers are the only good thing about this movie. Stay away...

Saw it last night and loved it. Laughed @ every scene of ultra violence with Chloe. That kid was rocking! @the 10:30pm show there was still about 20% full and kids kept trying to sneak in from "How to train your Dragon" and I ran there little asses out.

Again lol and loved the movie.

"Unless “Kick-Ass” opens significantly below expectations, Lionsgate should end up in good financial shape on the movie, particularly if those who go see it on its first weekend like the movie and create positive buzz. The studio paid $15 million for domestic distribution rights to “Kick-Ass” and is spending between $25 million and $30 million on advertising and prints."
-L.A. Times April 15, 2010

So it is going to turn a very good profit even if it only grosses 50 million which is where I believe it will end up.
