Matthew Vaughn who was attached to not only X-Men 3 but also the Thor movie before leaving both, had some words with MTV on what could have been.

When asked about X-Men 3 Vaughn had this to say.

"I was a little bit shocked when I saw it."

"This is my love letter to superhero movies," Vaughn told MTV News of "Kick-Ass," which hits theaters Friday. "And I tried to put all the ideas that 'X-Men' gave me into it and then working on 'Thor' [as well]."

"I've been thinking about doing a comic book movie for a long, long time, and I was just bored of nearly doing it and not doing it. ['Kick-Ass'] is like an explosion of everything coming together."

"No offense to Ratner, but I just felt that it needed more heart," Vaughn said of the finished product. "That's what I thought was missing. I was a little bit shocked when I saw it."

"That sort of thing makes an audience really fall in love with the characters," Vaughn said of the importance of building an emotional stake, rather than just throwing people in tights on the screen.

Nice find HAWKS! Personally, I was a little bit sick when I saw it. ;) I'd love to see Vaughn direct a mainstream superhero movie but I think he'll have probably enjoyed the independence he had with Kick-Ass to let that happen...let him direct Mark Millar's Nemesis I say!!!

After seeing how faithful Kick Ass was and hearing that he's all about the heart I would be happy for him to direct any number of CBM's. Preacher comes to mind first and foremost.

@Ror-Definitely think Matthew Vaughn could find a nice balance between the heart of the characters and the more shocking elements of Preacher.

I got one for everyone to laugh at. Once I looked at this picture and actually acnkowledged it, I realized my stupidity. For whatever reason, I kept thinking of Vince Vaughn, not Matthew Vaughn. Lmao! I'm such a tard!!!

I was never that impressed with Vaughn, but Kick-Ass will probably turn that around. He seems like a director with real integrity, and that's the kind I like. Good move bailing out on X3, he knew Fox was killing it's franchise with that mess.

Preacher could be an excellent vehicle for him. If his movies keep succeeding, I doubt we'll ever see him tied to a big studio production.

Vaughn impresses me more and more with every interview. The man really seems to have a strong affection for comics, and good knowledge of film.

I can't wait to see what he makes next.

Oh, and X-3 definitely needed heart and dedication. The only thing Rat-Turd thought about when filming X-3 was the big paycheck at the end of the day.

@telavizion-You are probably in the minority here if you liked X3. You actually thought it was better than X2? Yikes!

X3 definitely did not need the Phoenix storyline in it, but I fail to see how Bryan Singer screwed up X3 by putting in an easter egg at the end of X2. I mean, a ten second scene at the end ruining a two hour movie? Seems like you're really reaching here, bud.

Vaughn just layed the smack down on Ratner! Sweet. Vaughn can handle any CBM in my opinion. I'd love to see what he could do!

X-Men 3 was the second worst modern comic book movie I've ever seen. Number 3 was Hulk and number 1 was to no one's suprise... Batman & Robin.

@telavizion
Do you like comic books? Do you read them or just stare at the pretty covers? If you read them and you are a comic book movie fan then you must realize X3 was a complete waste of time...

The script was bad, the plot was bad, and the acting was bad. The only thing worse than all of that was the directing.

Get a clue man, watch a good CBM like the Dark Knight or the Incredible Hulk.

So saith the Spectre!

x-3 had its good parts...i blame the sh!ttyness more on the script then the director...the action scenes in 3 were pretty sweet..it was the story that sucked balls...
~X

my fav part in that whole movie sadly was when wolvie was in the woods and he was fighting that guy version of marrow..i think they called him spike in the credits...he was jus a stunt man..but he made that scene look cool :)

Yeah I really don't think X3 was THAT bad..or more accurately, it had potential not to be. I guess by the very end it was pretty shit. I remember enjoying it to a point though. Some cool scraps and Beast was great. But yeah, [frick] Ratner and the horse he rode in on.

I didn't enjoy Kick-Ass.. but I am a Vaughn fan especially after his comments on Ratner. I've been voicing my disapproval for how Ratner ruined X3 making what was an awesome project, into a laughable special effects show. I loathe his movies and he even has the audacity to put his name on the tag line of every project he directs as if he is some genius. He stole the X-Men franchise, chewed it up and spit it out with a single movie, all the while so proud of his "accomplishment". It's easy to say everyone is a critic or everyone has their own opinions on a movie but the overall quality of the film compared to its predecessors is hardly debateable unless you were simply drooling the entire time over the amount of nonsensical "cool stuff" littering the screen. Vaughn or someone needs to clean up the mess left by Ratner in the next film.
