Mark Millar spills a few more details on Kick-Ass 2: Balls To The Wall to Total Film, including what to expect to see for Red Mist and Hit Girl next time around...

In the interview with Millar and John Romita, the two discuss a little more about Kick-Ass as well as their love for all things comic book so be sure to check out the full thing. Here are the Kick-Ass 2 highlights..

I always had this planned as three volumes, and each is a sequel. It’s not like a regular comic where it’s issue nine, ten and eleven. It’s Kick-Ass 2, Issue 1 sort of thing. It’s just starting where we left off last time.

Through success [Kick-Ass has] inspired other people, and what the heroes do is form gangs. It’s a bunch of people in masks looking at each other’s Facebooks and going out and fighting each other. Like a massive fight in Time Square with hundreds of superheroes and hundreds of supervillains, and the police trying to break it all up.

The first one was all about becoming a hero. And the second one really is about becoming a villain… you’ve got Red Mist who’s become like Alex in Clockwork Orange. So he’s a bit Heath Ledger’s Joker, a bit of all the bad guys I’ve ever loved in movies. So yeah I suppose it is darker, but I think a big part of Kick-Ass is the jokes, so it’s still funny.

Hit Girl, of course, is back. At the end of the last movie she promised her step-father she wouldn’t kill people anymore, she’s just a kid. So I like the idea of doing a Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven, you know where the gunslinger hasn’t picked up a gun in 20 years, but doing that with a 12 year old girl. She’s watching Glee and all that – she’d rather be out there fighting crime.

Glee? Surely not Mindy! I loved the first Kick-Ass so I can't wait to see..but firstly read..the sequel. Mathew Vaughn's film remained pretty solidly faithful to Miller's comic, so I can't imagine the sequel will be much different.

Well overall, I liked the first one. Except for the "Hit Girl" character. She contradicted the entire feel of the movie.

The gang thing sounds pretty cool. Sounds like good, expansive material.

But I still think the sequel would be better off if they left out "Hit Girl".

the books are really good. the movie did a pretty good job sticking to the story except for the happy ending...lol. the book ends on such a downer i always figured they'd change that up when it went hollywood. no general audiences would have liked that ending...no matter how more realistic it was.
@suffertree - i have to completely disagree with you. Hit Girl was an extremely important part of the movie and book. she really IS a superhero. Kick-ass was just a kid with nerve damage and steel plates, hit-girl was trained to be a lethal assassin.

either way, i can't wait to see the sequels

I loved the first one, and would love a sequel, but with Kick-Ass vastly underperforming at the box office, what are the chances this sequel will actually happen?

(by the way, I am new to the site.. been reading for along time but new to posting! whats up guys!)

I'm in the minority on this franchise. I thought the movie matched the books perfectly....Both sucked! I really never thought they would make a movie out of the books.

@ CBartist - how did the ending of the movie match up with the comic? i don't want to spoil anything for people who haven't read the books, but the ending is different. the motivation of Big Daddy is different. the relationship with the girl he is pretending to be gay with is different. They stuck to the comic better than some movies, but nowhere near perfectly.
as for it sucking, opinions vary...i thought it was pretty, well, kick-ass!

@BradyRoberts: Welcome to the site and..(hope you have that lube ready)

Underperformed at the box office? By what standards?

It's made over 4 times its budget and that's before the DVD sales, where the word of mouth will ensure it does just as well, if not better.

This wasn't a $150m-$200m tentpole studio blockbuster that fell short - it was a small $30m, independently financed and produced film that did rather bloody well actually.

Awesome stuff ROR! The changes in the second half of the movie bothered me a little so I just hope Millar gets the comic finished before the movie this time in order to avoid that. I know things eventually ended up in the same place regardless, but the first half of the movie being an almost panel to panel direct adaptation was great IMO. The movie did do a few things better though...Dave and whats-her-name getting together for example! :P

Great find Ror! I loved the first film and hearing this is going to get me pumped for what could be in store for the sequel.

@JoshW
The jetpack was really what stood out in a bad fashion, but here is to hoping this time around it could be done better and closer. Plus I like the whole 'super heroes and supervillains fighting each other on the street and FaceBooking each other' thing.

I loved both the comic and the movie. I actually think that this ties with TDK for my favorite CBM.

SPOILERS

I had no problem with the changes (the jetpack is actually not as impossible as you'd think)... except the fact that he got Katie. Him getting rejected was one of the best parts of the comic IMO. I think something that could maybe work is at the begining of Part 2, he just says "The whole me getting the girl was complete and total bull. Gettin that out the way". I know itd feel like a slap in the face initially, but at the same time hilarious!

@KeithM - I seem to remember it performing fairly poorly at the box office, and read many articles that said it had done much less than the studio had hoped for. I could be wrong but this is what I read.

Either way, even if it made it's budget back plus more, for a movie to be guaranteed a sequel it has to perform very strongly, and I wouldn't say Kick Ass did that. The box office numbers certainly didn't blow anyone out of the water.

Not saying it won't get a sequel, because it looks like they are moving forward, just saying there's no guarantee unless a movie did really great numbers.

@ Omegablack 13

I dunno , I kinda liked the fact he got the girl in the movie version (it actually made me "awww" when she asked him to stay) it was sweet.

it gave the film that satisfying feeling come the credits roll.
Plus they have a plot device to play around with with come the sequel, Kick-ass has someone that can be got to and that he may have to protect..

Thoght the film didnt set alight when it was released in movie theatres, I think its gona clear up on dvd an blu-ray sales :-)

The movie for Kick Ass is honestly one of the best comic-related films I've ever seen. It does have the stigma of having a small, specialized audience (this is just NOT a mainstream audience story), but as long as they keep the budgets small, there is enough of an audience out there to give us a sequel or two. The audience for the second one might actually be more, as enough of us show our friends the first one on DVD and show them what they missed.

A massive fight with a bunch of superhero wannabes in Times Square?

That just sounds like an awesome scene.
