Overall, I have to say that I have mixed feelings on this movie. I found it to be entertaining and fun but at the same time there were parts of the movie I didn't like either. First off, this is quite a different CBM, I mean it's not everyday you see or hear in a movie, a 10 year-old girl say, "Okay, you c**nts" and "I'm just f**king with you daddy". I can tell there will be parents out there who would probably want to boycott this film and even protest at movie theaters (fortunatley, not mine lol). I've also never read the comic so I won't say how close to the source material is was but from some of the covers I've seen it looks like it's pretty close to the source material!

(Spoilers!!!)

The plot is basically that Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a average teen, gets the idea to suit himself up as a costumed vigilante after getting mugged. Unfortunatley, he has no super powers and after a encounter with some thugs, a knife, and a car, he winds up with some metal plated bones and severed nerve endings, so he basically doesn't feel much pain when he fights bad guys. He later becomes an internet sensation, called Kick-Ass, thanks to some footage taken on a cell phone by a witness. His life begins to get better after the accident, with his school crush Katie finally wanting to get to know him, though only for the reason that she believes he is gay, which he goes along with. We are later introduced to Big Daddy (Nic Cage) and his daughter Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz), who are two highly trained costumed vigilantes. They see potential in Kick Ass and take an interest to him. Unfortunately so does crime boss Frank D'Amico (Mark Strong) who thinks that Big Daddy and Hit Girl's raids on his crime ring are the work of Kick-Ass. Another costumed hero called Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), inspired by Kick-Ass's antics, becomes a superhero. Red Mist later turns out to be the son of Frank D'Amico and that's when things start to get ugly and Kick-Ass has to save the day!!!

One thing I will say is that Matthew Vaughn did a great job directing and making this film and it makes me wonder what X3 could have been like if Vaughn had directed it. The actors were all great in this movie, especially Chloe Moretz as Hit-Girl, she needs at least some sort of award nomination for her performance in Kick-Ass. Nic Cage, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Aaron Johnson were all good in this film to! The music was pretty
good to! Now onto the things I didn't like about this movie. For one thing, this movie is supposed to be about what would happen if people really dressed up as a costumed-crime fighter and it's supposed to be pretty believable. The 1st half of the film was believable but to me, the 2nd half wasn't even believable at all, I mean seriously, a jetpack? That and some other unbelievable scenes in the 2nd half, just ruined the movie for me and took me right out of it.

I really couldn't decide whether or not to rate Kick-Ass with 3 stars or 2 stars so I went in between. This film is by no means bad, it's pretty good, but the 2nd half may (or did for me) ruin it for you!

-2.5 out 4 stars-

Nice work Ozy, although some of it sounded a bit familiar!!! Seriously dude, lay off the plagiarism. I do agree about the jet pack and rocket launcher. Say what you want about the movie before that, it was over the top, it was comic booky..that crossed over into cartoon territory and I wasn't crazy about it, didn't ruin it or anything , but there you go.

Kick ass was Ok, in my book.. Like you Ozy, I hated the 2nd half.. The main character was weak, and I hate it when they end movies with no sense of purpose.. Hit-girl was like, "My daddy is dead, Oh..well."

From my review...

" Dave Lizewski is your average teen that gets the idea to suit himself up as a costumed vigilante. The problem is, he has no super powers, and even at that he's about as useful in a fight as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest(pun intended). But after a fateful encounter with some thugs, a knife, and a car, he winds up with a few metal plated bones and severed nerve endings which make him great at.. getting the shit beat out of him and not feeling it, which really comes in handy. He becomes an internet sensation thanks to some footage taken on a witness to his exploits phone. He finds his life taking a turn for the better as after his accident, his school crush Katie finally notices him, although only for the reason that she believes he is gay, which he goes along with. As this is happening we are introduced to Big Daddy and his daughter, Hit Girl, two highly trained and very capable REAL costumed vigilantes. They see potential in Kick Ass and take an interest. Unfortunately so does crime boss Frank D'Amico who believes that Big Daddy and Hit Girl's constant thwarting of his criminal activities are the work of Kick-Ass. Another costumed hero called Red Mist also enters the fray, inspired by Kick-Ass's antics. The film then switches gears as Lizewski realizes that playing super hero has dangerous consequences."

Suck that everyone's gonna be saying "Kick-Ass was SO good! This deserves Cult Classic status!" while I can't even see it. :(

I'm with Leee here (bloody rare I tell you) - Kick-Ass IS gold and I think you may have allowed your own expectations and preconceptions preventing you from enjoying the movie for what it is, not for what it isn't.

Do a search for "jetpack" on Google - you can buy a civilian version for under $100,000. It's a bit bulkier than the one Hit-Girl buys, but she paid $300,000, so I assume she got a custom model.

It was pushing the reality envelope sure, but nothing you couldn't actually do if you had the cash and the contacts.

The jetpack moment though was actually a lot more realistic than some other parts of the film:

It isn't remotely realistic for an 11 year old girl to move and kill like she does in the movie. Also, when Red Mist shot her, the fall alone would have killed or seriously injured her, even if she was wearing a vest.

It isn't remotely realistic for Dave not to have been crippled for life or dead after the way that car hit him. After 6 months he'd still be on crutches at the very least.

Not sure how realistic the guy in the microwave was - will have to do some tests and get back to you. ;)

The "what if this were real?" thing is only a hook as a starting point to tell the story they wanted to tell, not the point of the story itself. As they CLEARLY point out to you - it would actually result in death in, like, a day. At that point, it's point made, game over - if a guy like Dave really dressed up in a costume and tried to physically stop crime, it would be a very short movie. And sad.

But instead of stopping there, the movie says to you "ok, now let's pretend this dude actually carries on - let's run with it... let's have some fun with this 'reality' conceit and let's poke some affectionate fun at the genre, while at the same time, showing how much we love it too."

The film doesn't forget its premise as 'reality based', but it doesn't even try to be a kitchen sink look at real people dressing up in tights - it says "LET'S HAVE SOME FUN" and both parodies and embraces all the tropes of the genre - brilliantly.

Instead of trying to "go against" the notion of a big cheesy finale, they instead, brilliantly imo, go to town with it, even letting you know the joke is intentional by playing Elvis over the top - which was hilarious.

It's a shame you couldn't share the joke. I'd say lighten up and watch it again, but that might only make you angry. :)

If you want something less fun and more 'real', but still good, give Defendor a try instead.
