The Design And Gender Of THE MUMMY Were Altered Due To X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

While there hasn't been a lot of buzz over the decision to reimagine The Mummy as an ancient Egyptian princess in Universal's upcoming reboot, writer Alex Kurtzman has revealed that the design and gender alterations were made due to a very recent comic book movie! In an interview with Cinema Blend, Kurtzman explained that his original plan was to have a male mummy who was born with a skin condition that altered his pigment, which would have him as more of a bullied outcast in the days of ancient Egypt.

"I'll let you in on a secret. There was a moment when I had sort of rendered a design that I liked for a male version of The Mummy. And in that version of The Mummy, the Mummy had been born with a skin pigmentation that at the time would have made him really sort of an outcast. And I thought it was an interesting backstory, because it began to tell the story of someone who had been bullied, which I found topical. I was reaching for a way to make the Mummy a character who is relatable, understandable, and that spoke to issues that we're dealing with now."

However, Kurtzman's plans were dashed upon seeing the post-credits sequence to X-Men: Days of Future Past, which featured a young, blue-skinned mutant Apocalypse. For Kurtzman, this was far too similar to his original idea, leading to a design overhaul. "I was going down that road, and then I saw the end of Days of Future Past. And they had the character that Oscar Isaac wound up playing as a boy, and it was, I kid you not, the exact same design. And I was like, 'Oh, man! That is not good!' And actually it was the catalyst, it was the moment of, 'Okay, not only is this not going to be different enough, Bryan Singer just did it, I definitely don't want to go down that road.' I had had that voice in my head for some time to make it a woman, and that was the moment where, the minute I saw that post-credits scene, I went, 'We have to start over.'"

Would you have preferred Kurtzman's original idea, or are you satisfied with the change? Sound off below! The Mummy will reawaken in threatres on June 9, 2017.

Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The boy who played Apocalypse must've portrayed the character at an earlier time because Issac played him as a different character.

@TheRationalNerd - Yes and no, because that scene was made before they made Apocalypse an incorporeal entity.

I guarantee you there was no foresight at that point in time when the after credits scene was made. It was just a young Apocalypse, and they changed him into a body swapper a year later.

@MattBellissimo - I'm sure you're right... Just like the post-credit for the Wolverine was Logan joining Charles and Magneto for some mission. What was the mission? Doesn't matter since Days of Future Past picks up years and years later.

They may have done it before Marvel, but Fox's post-credit game is the worst.

I get potentially changing the pigment idea... but the gender change seems like it has no basis in anything...

@Scarilian - Not if you know a little history. Egyptian society was matriarchal until the priests murdered Tutankhamun's parents and installed the boy king.

@MattBellissimo - Yeahp. Just like they completely discarded that "mystique is posing as Stryker" subplot they just threw in there for the lulz tat the end of DOFP. Ugh, FOX...

For the best I guess. Sofia Boutella is awesome.

I'm glad they switched it up. Sofia Boutella is incredibly charismatic, looks amazing in the role, and is an actual North African playing an Egyptian for once! What a concept! Jury's out on the movie (directing in the clips has been very weird), but she's a creative choice I can get behind.

Egypt's legacy of fascinating and dynamic queens, from Nefertiti to Cleopatra, is a great one to explore in a film of this type. I hope they root her character in history.

As for Apocalypse, yeah, the young boy looking totally different from Oscar Isaac bothered me a bit, but the body-swapping explanation is fine. That's like the millionth most annoying inconsistency in that series, so I can let it go.

Jokes on Kurtzman because Singer didn't actually use that design anyway.

But it is nice to see that lazy Hollywood minds think alike. "We got a magic Egyptian dude... uh... okay, bald, robe, pale bluish skin. Done. Now pass the cocaine cigarettes!"

@Spock0Clock - I think it's funny that his Mummy design changed from Apocalypse to Enchantress

Also... "Bullying is topical so I wanted to make a movie about it happening 4 thousand years ago to someone who becomes an undead monster king". Yeah, this movie is beyond [frick]ed.

The more I hear about this, the more I dislike about it.

I get wanting to do something different from past films, but the Mummy was never scary because of some sort of persecuted soul story, like with the Frankenstein creature. The Mummy always struck me as this thing exacting the gods' wrath on man for violating ancient laws. As the maji described it:

A walking disease, a plague upon mankind, an unholy flesh-eater with the strength of ages...

@UltimateCarnage - Wow... that was... interesting. I mean, I'm not sure they could have turned the property into something any better, but I'm surprised that it's so close to a parody. I thought they were going to be a bit more earnest about it. One of the weird things about Baywatch was how it pretended to be about more than just tits and dumb stories, but the movie sort of wears it on its sleeve.

@Spock0Clock - The CGI is awful.

Like Wolverine: Origins awful.
