As part of their summer movie preview, Entertainment Weekly has released a new photo from Universal Pictures' The Mummy featuring a very intense staredown between Tom Cruise's recently resurrected Nick Morton and Sofia Boutella's recently awakened monster, in what looks to be an underground prison in Prodigium.
Speaking with director Alex Kurtzman (People Like Us), EW learned that Princess Ahmanet's evil reign began when her father, following the birth of her younger brother, broke his promise to make her pharaoh, which led to her to downfall into becoming the ultimate evil known to man. Kurtzman describes her as “a woman who wasn’t content to be put in her place and wanted something more." In researching her role, Boutella learned quite a lot about Egyptian mythology and attempted to emulate some of these traits to bring a sense of royalty to Ahmanet. "These people never shouted. They were the most powerful people, but they were just calm.”
As for the larger Monsters universe, Kurtzman promises his film won't attempt to rush the process and will instead allow the universe to develop organically. "The movie’s called The Mummy, not The Mummy Meets 12 Other Monsters... If we create a world that feels interesting and scary, then we will have succeeded in setting up the larger universe." Sounds good to me.
