It looks like we could be in for a real treat come next June when Universal Pictures welcomes us back to a new world of Gods and Monsters with the arrival of The Mummy, which will serve as the first chapter in the reimagining of Universal's classic Monster movie verse.

The trailer was released just moments ago featuring Tom Cruise taking action against one of the greatest terrors the Earth has ever known. It starts out with Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Courtney B. Vance, and several other soldiers airlifting a sarcophagus out of Egypt, which seems to be going well until they're interrupted by a legion of crows that promptly take down their plane. Cruise manages to save Wallis' character, via parachute, but all hope seems to be lost for him...

It then takes us threw a handful of exciting action beats before ending with a confrontation between Cruise's character Nick and Russell Crowe's mysterious Dr. Jekyll, who introduces the titular villainess and also seems to have his own hidden agenda.

Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The Mummy features:
Director: Alex Kurtzman
Tom Cruise as Nick Morton
Annabelle Wallis as Jenny Halsey
Sofia Boutella as Princess Ahmanet/The Mummy
Jake Johnson in an undisclosed role
Courtney B. Vance as Colonel Gideon Forster
Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll/Mr. Hyde
Javier Botet as Set
Selva Rasalingam as King Menehptre
Dylan Smith as Lorenzo Montanari
Rez Kempton as Foreman
Marwan Kenzari in an undisclosed role
Chasty Ballesteros as Kira Lee

The problem is that this movie has zero stakes and that given its a reboot and follows a generic action movie formula while setting up future films - its incredibly predictable;

We know Tom Cruise will survive because he's the main character and they want to build an established series with him - he even returns from the dead after the opening action scene. The love interest is certain to survive also because the main character is basically using himself as a meat shield to any attacks to protect her.

The princess mummy aspect is basically set-up to have Imhotep in a sequel. In the previous movies he's basically in love with a princess who is stolen away from him via her early death. In this case, its simply introducing the Princess first, having the heroes defeat her and then having Imohtep appear with a grudge against the heroes for killing the Princess after her return.

@RancidBane - The thing is, Enchantress WAS ancient

@MarvelDCAllDay - And it didn't fit with her living in the current world for so long. She had been a part of June for a long time she would have adapted. The mummy just woke up.

@RancidBane - Are you kidding? The thing had been trapped for thousands of years in that artifact. Also - why would she adapt over the short amount of time that she was free? Don't see your logic there at all. Wouldn't make sense to just change over hours'-length, just to fit in when you're a powerful thousands-of-years-old sorceress.

@IronGenesis - Yup it is gonna be crapped on by a lot of people, but I can't freaking wait for it to start. I love the classic Universal monsterverse.

@IronGenesis - Yeah! Looks like it could be fun!

Wiki page says Russell Crowe is Dr. Jeckyl...Javier Bardem is Frankenstien and Johnny Depp is Invisible Man..could be really cool

@FormulaOne - Now is Bardem Frankenstein or the monster Frankenstein creates? I could accept either/or. He has chops.

Depp as Invisible Man may be appealing too. He has some range and can pull off suave yet kooky.

Crowe will nail Jekyll. Nail it hard.
