Universal Pictures has officially unveiled the synopsis for their upcoming Tom Cruise-starrer The Mummy, the first installment in their planned Monster Movies Cinematic Universe, with promises of big things on the horizon. There aren't too many details provided, but we do get some idea at what to expect with Sofia Boutella's titular villain, and it definitely sounds like Universal is taking the upcoming reboot in a very new and exciting direction. Check it out below:

Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

"Gods and Monsters" - Ending with a nod to classic monster movie director James Whale is certainly a nice touch.

Production on the Alex Kurtzman-directed film is currently underway in London. Global megastar Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation) is headlining the picture with Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Marwan Kenzari (Ben-Hur), Courtney B. Vance (The People v. O.J. Simpson), and Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys), who confirmed his role as Dr.Jekyll/Mr.Hyde earlier tonight, co-starring. Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange) penned the script. Check out Crowe's confirmation tweet below:

Apparently the entire Universal Monster Universe takes place in modern day, which I'm excited about. It's a modern day Penny Dreadful.

This can either be amazing or a pile of poo. Tom Cruise's movies have been great lately, so we shall see...

I love the first two Mummy movies and I really didn't think they needed to be done again, but oh well.

@KurtCrawler - Hopefully it won't be and this one hews closer to the original movie (at least as far as being a horror film, as opposed to firmly in the Indian Jones vein (especially The Mummy Returns).

Though whichever way they go, please no irritating kids.

This seems more in the vein of the classics, than the ones with Fraser. Fraser's Mummy movies were like Indian Jones and National Treasure. They were adventure movies that focused more on the thrills than the chills. I'd like to see something more a little more scary with tight camera angles and less grande scale globe trotting.

@bs77 - I hope Cruise has a scene like this

@12121 - Frasier should have a cameo for sure in this, and then he gets killed by the Mummy.

The two Mummy movies hold a special place in my heart, but man, the team behind this... I'm so gonna embrace this reboot.

Tom is the biggest star in China, so this will easily get a sequel. This should be a good and fun movie. The cast is great in it too. I just hope after this comes out and does well a Creature from the Black Lagoon gets a movie. That is one movie l really want to see.
Gill-Man would be great with today's CG and makeup. So I hope this universe will be great, because it is about time we get to see a really good monster universe.
