Despite Battleship's lackluster box office performace (it still made $302 million worldwide) in 2012, Universal had its highest-grossing year. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter about their upcoming movies and what franchises will they focus on, Universal chairman Adam Fogelson commented on Van Helsing reboot, which Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are developing, and Tom Cruise is attached to star:

"We are developing another Mummy. We are looking at rebooting Van Helsing because I think the idea for the Van Helsing story was a great way of solving the question of, "How do you make a blockbuster out of monsters?"

Fogelson also talked about The Bourne Legacy and how they will definitely make another one:

"The point of the last movie was to create a universe, a world and characters that give us a lot of freedom and flexibility in how we go forward. Yeah, the movie didn't perform the way the last one did. It also didn't cost what the last one did. It performed more along the lines of how the first one did. I absolutely see us doing more Bourne, 100 percent yes. Matt has talked about the possibility of coming back, and we totally respect that and are excited if and when he wants to have conversations. But I think the last movie gave us a big bunch of options to pursue a next chapter."

On Christmas Day this year, a big budget samurai movie will be released, titled 47 Ronin, starring Keanu Reeves. The film went through a rather long production, with a couple of delays due to reshoots and post-production. We still haven't seen anything from the film other than those early promo posters, many are wondering what to expect. Fogelson shared his thoughts on Keanu Reeves star power, and whether he will be major draw for this film:

"Keanu Reeves has been very selective over the years in the sort of big action franchises he has chosen to involve himself in. And when he's done it, he has been, on a global level, incredibly successful. We're excited that this is the one he's chosen for this part of his career and think that every time he comes back to any version of this genre, it has been remarkably consistent."

And finally, it seems that they are indeed moving forward with another Snow White and the Huntsman film:

"We're actively developing the movie right now with Kristen's character central, as well as the Huntsman role. We think that for a first movie out of the gate to do basically $400 million worldwide, there is a lot of opportunity. I don't think Rupert is pursuing the next Snow White as a directing opportunity."

Were "Constantine" and "The Day the Earth Stood Still" really "incredibly successful" and "remarkably consistent" on a "global level?"

Van Helsing could be a really cool movie.

You'd have to be a complete idiot to mess that concept up. Hopefully it won't happen twice.

I'd LOVE a Van Helsing movie done right...hell, it doesn't even need Van Helsing (since he never really was a vampire hunter, much less a Vatican-sponsored steampunk-secret agent/monster assassin ... sigh...really, Somers?).

However...I don't care if they get Karloff, Lugosi and Chaney to co-star, it'll be a cold day in hell before I watch a Tom Cruise movie

What's the betting that the Mummy reboot will, along with other possible monster movie reboots, will all tie in to the eventual Van Helsing reboot?

On Bourne, I liked Legacy but I would like them to bring Damon back. Keep Renner and just let him and Damon team up in the 5th movie.

Van Helsing is a classic directed by one of the all time greats, Stephen Sommers. Don't know why it gets so much flack.

Kristen is good when she's not playing Bella(?); haven't seen the Gandolfini film where she played the stripper or her turn as Snow White.

A Van Helsing film done right(chasing down vampires in the first film and not the Universal Monster's Rogue's gallery) could be a great! Just look at Coppola's version of Bram Stoker's Dracula.., add some contemporaries and go from there. We'll probably get another dumbed down steam punk film disguised as a Universal Monster movie.

I never seen Blast from the Past but sure looks a lot better than the final result of both Spirit of Vengeance and G.I Joe and looks a lot better than what Hansel and Gretel look.

Van Helsing is my guilty pleasure along with the league of extraordinary gentlemen, I know they are both crap but it's 2hours of pure popcorn mindless crap. Sometimes ppl miss thats the whole idea of a film, it isn't meant to want you to change the world or feed third nation countries. It's meant to be 2 hours of mindless crap fun.

I so wish i was an universal studios executive ! They havent been as strong as the other studios and thats a shame because they have so much potental first and foremost i wouldnt have spent $200 mil on BATTLESHIP.
Del toro would get his dream movie Frankenstein and start building out franchises they own and do something with them.

Battleship could've been a great film it they hadn't taken it the Transformers route. It should have been a period WW2 film, modestly fictionalized, and pitted Allied against Axis forces against each other whether Atlantic or Pacific.
