VAN HELSING Reboot Lands AQUAMAN Helmer James Wan As Producer And OVERLORD's Julius Avery As Director

We have more good news for Monster movie fans today, as Deadline is reporting that Universal Pictures is moving forward with a new take on Van Helsing. Aquaman and The Conjuring director James Wan is producing through his Atomic Monster banner, while a director has been found in Overlord's Julius Avery (he recently wrapped Samaritan starring Sylvester Stallone).

There's no word on plot details yet, but the trade notes that "the film is set in the world of the famous monster hunter." Hugh Jackman played the character on the big screen back in 2004, but the movie underperformed at the box office and Van Helsing has been sidelined ever since.

Now that an interconnected "Dark Universe" is no longer on the cards, Universal is said to be open to all sorts of different takes on these classic characters (Van Helsing started off as an enemy to Dracula).

Given Avery's track record, it's possible that we'll be getting a much darker take on Van Helsing with an R-Rating. Avery is currently in the process of rewriting the screenplay which was originally penned by Black Widow's Eric Pearson. It's hard not to be intrigued by what form Van Helsing could take, but it should be a lot of fun to see the vampire hunter back on the big screen after so many years.

We'll keep you updated as more details are revealed about this one.

Cool, just don't try to make him a superhero. Cast someone in their mid 40's to early 50's

@SimplyAz - Yeah could see Caviezel. I like Jackman, but would like to see less of an action hero type Van Helsing

@dracula -

Yeah hope they cast someone who can portray a character who is calm but then has that rage behind the eyes.

Although with your username you should get dibs on fancasting suggestions : )

This could be interesting, almost like a James Bond type who get's sent on these missions to take out creatures and demons.

I'd like to see them cast someone like Timothy Olyphant, someone who is famous but not to the level of someone like Tom Cruise

I'm all for it, but they have to take a different approach than with the Jackman movie. There are just too many stupid and/or forgettable fantasy/horror/action movies.

Cool. I always liked Van Helsing. Even liked the Hugh Jackman movie/video game.

I wish the 2004 Van Helsing was remembered just as fondly as the 1999 Mummy. Not just because they're from the same director. It was honestly just as awesome.

I'm with the majority here, the Jackman Van Helsing film is underrated. As a kid seeing Wolverine transform into a wolf and fight Dracula to the death was amazing.

I’m actually excited about this , an R rated and Dark Van Helsing movie is what the world needs. I also wish they could do Dr. Jerkell and Mr. Hyde, man I love that character. I did like the Russell Crowe take on it though, that was so [frick]ed up. Loved it. Anyway, Van Helsing, I believe James won’t disappoint and that overlord Director is straight gore so it can work. But pleas know Hugh Jackman dancing actors, maybe they should use a black actor? Now that would be interesting.
