For fans that didn't already know, the amazing
Scarface film is set to hit Blu-ray quite soon and while out promoting the release, one of the film's stars turned producer, Steven Bauer, gives us a bit of an update on the progress of Universal's unnecessary reboot of the
Wolfman project. Bauer, who played "Manny" in the popular gangster flick, is acting as aproducer for the upcoming reboot and he tells Movie Hole that two actors have alreay signed on to the project.
"What I could say is that Stephen Rea is already casted. The great Irish English actor, Stephen Rea is in the film. And another American who’s maybe… Another American, Ed Quinn is in it too.
Most people would know Stephen Ras for his role as "Finch" in James McTeigue's adaptation of
V for Vendetta. Ed Quinn is a lesser known actor, but he has had a recurring role on SyFy's now-cancelled
Eureka, as well as HBO's hit series
True Blood. No word on what his role would be, but Rea will be playing the lead role in the film, which is to be directed by Louis Morneau, who is most known for his direct-to-DVD films.
The script for the film is actually a reworked version of what was to be the sequel to Joe Johnston's
Wolman film, which failed to earn its budget back at the box office. Universal opted to reboot the franchise instead of continuing with the series it initially attempted to set up.
I'm a fan of Rea and he definitely has the right look for the film, much like Benicio del Toro did in the previous film, but I fear that he does not have the star power needed to make this film a success. The fact that they hired a straight-to-DVD director does nothing to boost my hopes either. This film seems to be doomed from the get-go, but only time will tell. I guess it couldn't be any worse that del Toro's film right...?
