EDITORIAL: My Opinion & Thoughts On CBM's Community

Hi I’m BmSt32 and I have visited this site since 2011. What I want to discuss with the readers here today is what I think cbm.com and its community should do about the behavior that sometimes goes on around here, and some of the articles that get posted.

Editorial Opinion
By BmSt32 - Apr 03, 2013 04:04 AM EST

Not too long ago an article here was posted by ImTheGoodGuy debating about whether or not Batman’s one rule about killing was either a good or bad thing for Gotham. I enjoyed the article so much and how he brought to the table both sides of the argument, but there was also something different about this article as well. That one difference was that in the comments section almost all the comments posted by users here were having an actual discussion about the topic of the article rather than insulting the article or having a flame war between users about who was right and who was wrong. Now I ask you - “Why can’t it be the same thing for all the other articles that are posted on this site?””

I know that we all have different opinions about the articles that are posted here and we all want to tell our side of the argument. Most of the time is with articles having to do with Batman, Spider-Man, Avengers, Casting, Director, Editorials, Cosplay, etc. I propose that instead of starting comments with insults and names like [frick]ing nolanite, marvelite, whedonite, or whatever other –ites may be out there that we actually type out reasonable opinions like we did with this one article. I know many of you feel passionate about certain subjects on this site and I’m not saying that are freedom of expression should be limited, I mean after all we are not communists. But rather we should present our opinions with manners and intelligence. I mean our ability to think and rationalize is what separates us from the animals. By this I mean that if we just start insulting one another with explicit words just because we don’t agree with the others opinion it basically amounts to the equivalent of monkeys taking a dump in their hand and throwing it at one another just because they pissed each other off about something.

Also the name of this site is ComicBookMovie.com, this place should be a safe haven for all of us fans who grew up with all these great characters that the outside public is just starting to realize thanks to these movies. But unfortunately most of the time it is a place where most people use it to troll or hate on one another just because we don’t all have the same opinions about certain subjects posted on this site. Furthermore I know from experience that growing up and having an affinity for comic books, sci-fi, cartoons, and basically anything outside of the social norm was considered stupid, childish, gay, or whatever other insult people could come up with. But even though I never let the verbal abuse get to me, there are still people out there who can’t take an insult or humiliation, so a lot of them just shut themselves off from the world and either get depressed, angry, or turn to the one thing they love most. So when I see a website basically dedicated to just the fans of comic books, sci-fi, films, games, etc. and see that most of its users are basically becoming the same bullies from their youth.

So it makes one think, “Why are we spreading vile hatred at one another” shouldn’t it be the other way around and be a community that is united. Shouldn’t all fans be embracing this Golden Age of comic book movies even if our favorite company whether it’d be DC, Marvel, Image, 2000 A.D., or etc. is not the one coming out with the movie. Shouldn’t we be supporting all cbm’s so that in the near future we may get that one movie based on our favorite character. Also if we are all fans of the same genre shouldn’t we all be following the example of our drawn heroes to lead by example and to value one another as individuals. But it seems that many follow the villain’s example which seems to be since I was wronged by the world I must take it out on the world or if I’m miserable I must make others miserable. I know sounds a bit corny, but in the end we are all human and we all make mistakes, but I would rather follow the hero’s example rather than the villains. In conclusion I think we should just agree to disagree, be respectful of one another’s opinions, and just be a more united community rather than a divided one, I mean is not the end of the world if someone disagrees with you. Hopefully this editorial can at least be a contribution to where we will see a peaceful, friendly, and intelligent debates on this site more often in the future and a future where we finally shed ourselves of the hate.

This is BmSt32 Signing Off & I hope you enjoyed this article.

@fangz - Yeah I know what your saying in an idealized world people would respect each other but this is the real world, but for the most part the thing I want there to be an end of are the personal attacks on an individual who just wants to share his or her opinion because you never know if the person has personal problems at home or are depressed. Anyways thanks for reading glad you took the time.

@KAC - Yeah there was one but it seems they have come to the realization that it was probably not the big deal they made it out to be.

Also anyone reading this comment check out this fan made rendition of the wolverine mask, a nice try by CorronZenith30, but it had me laughing really hard:

Just like fangz said. Well-written articles with intelligent thoughts in it will always be better received than the other articles. That's why Batman's No-killing article was so well received.

So if an article says "X movie was such crap, I almost vomitted during the whole thing, I constantly hoped this guy would die from the beginning" it is sure to start a flame war. But if the writer says why he didn't like it with valid points, and constructive criticism, it might go the other way. You have to learn to rub people the right way to have them be on your side.

Also just like Fangz said, too much of one is not better than too much of the other. We have to keep a certain balance.

Great article. I agree 100%.

Some people piss me off here, particularly the whole Raimi Spider Man Movies vs TASM bullshit flame wars that go on here. I just wish that we could accept both movies for what they are and stop having pointless arguments about which is better and not insult people who perfer one over the other (looking at you DrDoom and LEVITIKUZ).

I love how you say that we should make this a safe haven for all comic book fans, because we really should.

All hate that happens here is because most of fans around are too biased. People do not really read comic books and then they think that just by watching a movie they know the character. And also people do not like to support the under dog even though they like it. It is pretty much like everybody saying the avengers is a master piece just because it box office results. I have found great comic book fans here and great opinions around that have helped me enrich my knowledge and apreciation of the comic book world, but to be honest with u most of the posts here do not even have to do with comic books!!! In time u just learn how to ignore them :)

Great article! Why does everybody argue, we're all friends here! Hopefully this article will stop some of the trolling. Just wish this had come out during the whole Shailene Woodley debate. Then we wouldn't have to deal with a week and a half of trolls. Anyway, awesome article!

[frick] off Pussy…

… I kid… I kid :-)

Quite frankly I don't know when the hostilities started, but for me it was about 12 months ago before the Avengers Movie was released. This wasn't a disagreement or difference of opinion. It was pure hatred that was flying around here. I can only speak for myself. Yeah, I stir the pot once in a while. And I come down hard if I think someone trolling. But I don't hate anybody here. I'm too old for that and life is too short. I can tell you one thing. Hating is plain simpleminded. Perhaps those who are guilty of such feelings need to look themselves in the mirror and just ask themselves, "Why"

For the most part most regulars are genuinely good people and act accordingly.

This site naturally attracts a younger demographic given the subject matter at hand, and with that comes a lot of immaturity and all around jackassery. It's like a High School locker room around here, and that drives away those with anything intelligent, or thought provoking to say.

To some extent or another, all of us here are geeks. We love our comic book heroes, whether they live in the pages of the Marvel or DC universe, or whether they come to life on the large or small screen, in live action or cartoon. Our love for these characters is certainly why our opinions are so strong.
I have to agree with Odin, who put it quite eloquently, that we are all siblings here and the site just wouldnt be the same without the likes of JCam, Levi, Wonderer, Gusto, Nomis, Dio, Tea and the ever lovable Grif. (To name just a few...)
Great article, BmSt32 and Bravo to Galactus for creating this site.
Long live CBM!!

Back in the day, I used to go to Spider-Man Hype! It was the first CBM website. Overtime, Sipder-Man Hype! evolved into the site I'm sure most of you know now as Superhero Hype!. For many year that was THE place to go for CBM news.

I've been going to CBM now for quite some time. I liked it because there were always a ton of awesome scoops, rumors and spoilers. Really awesome exclusive news most of the time. It's really come into it's own over the last couple of years though, and it quickly overtook SSH as my new #1 CBM website. This honestly is a pretty big achievement!

While I don't get involved a lot, I do tend to mostly laugh at some of the stuff that goes on around here. I enjoy it. I love seeing the random hot chicks posted in comments, and the arguments (some are really good and informative, not just bashing).

All that being said, maybe over the last 6 months or so, I've become kind of annoyed by the comic BOOK articles. I go to comicbookresources.com or newsarama.com for that stuff. I'd personally prefer the site to just post news about comicbook movies - not comics themselves. It almost seems as though people post articles like that just for the sake of posting an article...

I could be wrong, but CBM's strengths always lied (and still do) in the exclusive, scoops and spoilers that many sites were afraid to post.

All this being said, thanks to everyone in charge for continuing to provide all of us fans with an awesome resource.

@BmSt32

Hello BmSt32,

I greatly appreciate your shout out and your respect for what I was trying to achieve. I've been a member of CBM since early 2012 and I've tried to be an advocate for civilized debate and internet etiquette since (you can check an article similar to this on my profile).

But enough narcissism from me, I loved this article. Any well written piece reminding us about being civilized without undermining anyone is an editorial worth reading.

As you pointed out in this article, there were (and sometimes still are) rifts in our mutual interest in the comic book genre that stem from our differing opinions. I've been called terrible names like "close minded Nolanite trash" for simply giving credit and there are times when I'm afraid to express my opinions.

For the most part, however, this is an absolutely great community to be a part of . In general, most users on the site are very friendly people. There are volumes of good contributors who exhibit respect and civilized manners and I can rightfully vouch for them.

Again, thank you for the shout out as I appreciate it, and thank you for reminding us that we are united in this website as people with a common interest in comics and that we should act as such. Be proud, your first article on the site made the front page! You can give yourself a pat on the back for that.

Well when you have different opinions on something it's bound to lead to an argument. Whether you're a fan of classic comic book movie or modern comic book movies,DC or Marvel it all comes down to which one is better which most tend to forget is all matter of personal opinion. We should all try to be civilize about that sort of stuff but in the heat of the moment we tend to forget that sort of stuff.
Xandera
Xandera - 4/3/2013, 1:52 PM
I agree with everything you're saying and applaud the article.
The nasty stuff started with the whole 'Nolanites vs Marvelites' BS...
It then evolved into 'Nolanites vs Whedonites' after The Avengers was released...
now it's simply 'DC vs Marvel'...
While I tend to enjoy Marvel more, I am also a fan of DC. I just like comics and comic book movies. It really doesn't matter what 'Comic Universe' they come from.

There used to be some really great intelligent debates on here. Now, for the most part, the comments are arguments that result in petty, immature name calling.
This is why I generally only read the articles now, rather than post comments.

Thanks for writing this article... I truly hope people take what you have said seriously...

@BmSt32 Thank you for taking the time to put out a thoughtful article, and for helping to get this dialogue going!! I'm a new member to the site, but have been visiting it for years, and it just seems like we lose a lot of credibility as a comic-loving community when the majority of what you see here is trolling and hating! Be passionate and speak your mind...just respect somebody else's "opinion" and leave it there! I'm as pumped for MOS as I am for IM3 and l of Phase 2!! Hope everybody else is too!!!

I have always wondered that myself...why do we seem to act as if we hate each other? I can understand bumping heads at times, but some of the crap that goes on here angers the hell outta me. In the past few weeks it has gotten much better, but I feel it's just the calm before another storm. Yea it would be kinda boring if we all got along everyday, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't be respectful of each other. If you don't like someone fine, but it doesn't mean you have to become some internet tough guy. We are all supposed to be kindred spirits here. Great article friend.

CCR - 4/3/2013, 5:11 PM
Agree 100%. BUT, a calm debate is next to impossible most of the time. People these days are SO jaded and arrogant. And all it takes is one poster to be a troll or voice their hate, even if it has nothing to do with the article, and the flame wars erupt. It was nice to have an adult and informed discussion on the Should Batman Kill piece, but that's a very rare bird indeed. I'm just glad SOME of us can appreciate what is the best time to be alive for CBMs :)

Awesome Article, I found out about this site about a couple months ago and I gotta admit, I get a laugh from the comments especially when it is a gif exchange. I really feel as if I have found people that like the same thing I love which is comics. At my high school, no one and I mean no one reads comics, I am stuck having thoughts in my head and making references to comics. It sucks, but here even though people argue and stuff I enjoy interacting with the community. Because Comic Books Rule
