EDITORIAL: What Got You Into Comics?

We are all here for basically the same reason, we all enjoy comic books and everything else that falls in or around the same territory. But many of us have different reasons on why and how we became associated with these imaginative illustrated stories.

My story and introduction to comics starts when I was in third grade. My best friend and cousin Bryan Kiefer slapped me on the arm when the teacher told us to pull out something to read and said: "check this out". And handed to me...



I had seen clips and peaks of the iconic characters films thanks to my older brother but never knew such an art form in this manner existed. I couldn't stop staring at the artwork and how graphic the pictures that someone drew were. The only comics I knew of were in the Sunday paper and, frankly, I thought they were lame or had no interest. But the comic above was fresh and exciting! And also told a story through the pictures alone.

AVP was my introduction to this world, but I instantly fell in love with many other titles.





Other titles like Fantastic Four, Robocop vs Terminator, Tales From the Crypt, Captain America etc, were among some of my favorites, and my stash grew until one day a few years down the road I found my love for music and (now) regretfully sold my entire collection to kids in school for practically lunch money.

Art didn't leave me though, I started collecting records and albums just for the art. If I didn't, I would have missed out on some classic albums like:

This led to my career as a full time musician. So in a way, I guess I should thank comics for leading me to my future path and lifestyle.

In My senior year of high school, Bryan was killed in a car accident and his mom had given me his collection of books that he had collected when we were kids. And while looking through everything, that key issue of AVP stared right at me, and was in that magic moment where my love for the books came back. Now, I just turned thirty and I still have that same issue and collect certain titles like Tales From The Crypt and Captain America primarily, and I find myself enjoying them as much as when I was a 3rd grader seeing his first issue. Thank You BK.

I'm not really into comic books, I just like movies based on superheros. Lmao, I guess that's why I liked Green Lantern.

To be honest, what got me really into comics as a kid was being introduced to them through both the X-men and Batman animated series.

Before then I was a sports fan, collecting cards and idolizing Michael Jordan

Then those shows came out while I was in elementary school, from then on I was the kid who would walk to his local comic book stores for the latest issues, took comic books and Wizard magazine to read in class, wore shirts with characters on them and drawing them when I should've been doing my homework :D

As a fan I'm glad to be here in this wat I consider the Golden Age of CBM's and cant wait to see how much more better they develop year to year from here on out...

Well, I got into Comic books and the movies around 2009. I don't remember what, but I just started liking the movies and the comics.

My introduction to superheroes was back in early 2000, there I met spider-man and x-men in their tasm. But comics? well around there, very young, I first read some very famous brazilian child comics, which I and the country still love very much, "the monica team", I started reading superheroes comics online, with the 60's x-men and spider-man. After watching the first iron man movie, I fell in love with the character and started reading online his classic comics, and then bought a lot of colections with classic tales, like demon in a bottle, armor wars, and his 60's stories!

Mine were 3 comics, Weapon X #1, a Punisher War Zone comic, and one of Knight Fall issues, I got a stack of comics when I was little after my brother passed away, and those comics really stuck with me.

What got me into comics was the 60's Superman, Batman, and JL titles, the first two Christopher Reeve Superman films, the original Michael Keaton Batman movie, 2002's Spider-Man movie, the Incredible Hulk TV show, and the original X-Men movie.

Being a skinny kid in elementary school, I was always into comic book superheroes. However my parents opposed the idea of purchasing comic books. I would wikipedia and spend hours reading about storylines. I recently purchased my first comic, which was Flash #18 of the New 52. I subscribed to age of ultron to get the gate foil cover. And i occasionally go to toys r us and buy some comics, and get some in amazon. I want to purchase the TPB of the relaunched Teenage Mutant NInja Turtles and Daredevil by Waid. Do you guys know any TPB that I should own?

Cool article idea!

I too remember AVP, or maybe it was just Predator being one of my first comics too. My very first comic was a lame Jurassic Park comic I bought at a Target in like 1994. I was a late bloomer though. I was in college when I really got hooked.

Preacher is what hooked me. From reading the entire series, I started buying more and more trades with Green Lantern Rebirth really starting the obsession. The whole history of Hal Jordan opened my up to the DC Universe as a whole. I spent a decade reading every major DC event til I understood everything chronologically from Crisis on Infinite Earths and on.

In 2008 I started travelling for a living and going to the comic store weekly to pick up monthlies to read on the plane is when I became a true believer!

I had always watched superhero cartoons when I was young, but it wasn't until I saw Sam Raimi's Spider-Man in the orthodontist's waiting room that I really fell in love with comic books. My 8-year-old self was inspired, and went through my Dad's old comic book collection.

The original Spider-Man will always be one of my favorite movies for this reason.

As big a DC Fanboy as I am now, I got my introduction to comics with Spider-Man strips in a news paper called the "Daily Graphic" all the way in Ghana, West Africa. I loved them. At the time I found, them Mysterio was the main villain for that arc and I enjoyed it immensely. There were three comics that were in the same page that had two six panel rows each. The other comic was one called "Garth" . I hear it was popular in Great Britain. Which is no surprise that we had it in Ghanaian newspaper since the British colonized my country (something I'm thankful for since there has been no war for about the last 80 years in my country). But yeah.. so once my dad realized why i was so interested in reading newspapers he would take out the comic page and give it to me every evening . And then after that whenever he went to the states he started getting me real comics. Which was my introduction to Superman and how I slowly gravitated to DC. 20 years down the line and i have not stopped since!

My mom got me into watching the old George Reeves Superman TV show when I was a kid. Around the same time, my newspaper did a promotional thing I guess which had reprints of the first Spider-man issues from the 60's. I loved them. Ultimately I found that there was more movies etc. and I watched them. Then I found that the library had TPBs. Then I really got into it!

I started reading in the eighties. My cousin had a dresser drawer filled. He told me one day to look through it and pick something to read. I went straight to Wolverine. I loved the character! Used to use scotch tape and pencils to pretend I was him. Wolverine, Spider man, Hulk and Iron man I found the most interesting. Still do to this day.

I cant remember a time when I didnt love superheroes or comic books. Some of my earliest memories are of reading my uncles collection- he had tons of Doom Patrol and Fantastic Four. My neighbor had Tarzan and Doc Savage, Tales From the Crypt- I would read anything. One of my first cartoons was the Spider Friends, which had Iceman and Firestar as main characters along side Spiderman. And who could forget the re-runs of Batman with Adam West and Burt Ward??

But I didnt become a "collector" until Spawn #1 came out. I thought it was a huge leap forward in color and print quality.It was sleek and artistic, dark, gritty and just beautiful to look at.

my dad use to read them when i was growing up,mum & use to buy my brother & i weekly british comics but they couldn't afford to that anymore so it stopped.

then i started buying marvel comics out of my paper round money,uncanny x-men 205 (1986) cover price 40p,now you can't pick up an issue of uncanny x-men for less than £2.65.

stopped buying comic books now just buy collections in trade paperback/hardcover or marvel omnibuses.

I have been into comics since before I could read. Found my dads collection from the late fifties thru the sixities(about five six hundred issues). I was actually reading before I started school because of comics. When I was six or seven I begged my mom to get me a short box of Marvel comics out of the sears catalouge, because there were no lcs close to where I lived. Then a lady opened a used book store around the corner, and she had four long boxes of back issues. Over the course of a year I brought just about every book she had. Unforunalety she closed down, because it seemed like I was her only costumer. When she closed down I was heartbroken and stopped collecting for a while. My mom got me into books/novels by then. She let me read stuff way above my age range, so I would stay interested. She gave me Iceberg Slim at the tender age of ten. By twelve or thirteen, on my many biking travels I found a LCS, and been collecting faithfully ever since.

I was all about the xmen and batman as a kid in the early eighties. The nineties was owned by new warriors and spawn. Now I follow artist and writers more than the titles.

I had just started collectin Marvel Classic Figurine collection, and I really wanted to start reading comics. So my cousin and I were watching Ghost Rider (I was 9 I knew no better) and when it was finished he was looking around at the figurines and he goes "Wait here I'll be back in a minute."

He ran to his house at the end of the street then came back with Ultimate X-Men issues 1-6 in graphic novel form.

After I read it, I decided to look for a comic book store and I discovered Forbidden Planet. Ever since then I've collected issues at random and read some classic stories. So, I owe it all to my cousin, really.

When I was a kid back in the 80's, Todd McFarlanes Amazing Spider-Man run is what brought me to the dance. McFarlane is still my favorite Spidey artist to this day. Then Batman89 and Batman:The Animated Series brought me into DC.

My first comic book was

Yep, smack dab in the Clone Saga.

But that's not what got me into comics. Batman the Animated Series gave me an obsession with the bad guys. You'll note that the Clone Saga issue highlights a version of the Sinister Six on it's cover.... yep.

Before the Animated Series, though, obviously, came

THAT got me into the character, which got me into the comics. The first movie I saw in theaters was Batman Returns, and my parents brought my brother and I there on opening day. The line was all the way out to the street, and when we got in, we understood exactly why. Batman was there. Except you know, it wasn't Michael Keaton, but some guy in a suit. He did some show right before the movie started, passed out memorabilia, all kinds of fun stuff. If I wasn't into Batman before then, I tell ya, that did the trick.

I believe my first comics were the Marvel Star Wars ones. When I was a kid, I went totally nuts about Star Wars, mostly due to my mom finding toys cheaply via Sears etc, and she gladly bought into the LFL merchandising machine. So I had Star Wars, which acted as my gateway. I also was really into Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, as well as the Incredible Hulk cartoon that was airing when I was a kid, and that led to getting into both their series. Secret Wars was a huge deal to me, as it had EVERYONE! I eventually got into stuff like Transformers and GI Joe, but didn't get into X-Men until the mid-80s. I then collected it while also scouring comic shops for back issues, eventually getting all the way back to reprints of 94 and the Giant Size.

When Dark Horse starting doing stuff like Aliens and Predators, and the above mentioned AVP, I definitely pounced on them, and of course the Dark Empire series. I believe their Terminator comics are what got me into Dark Horse though. I remember in High School, there were only a few of us who were still openly fanatics about Star Wars. At the height of my collection, I had nine long boxes full of comics. Now I have only 2, and shelves full of graphic novels. Most of that will go to my son in a couple years. He's already crazy for the Hulk, and enjoys Spider-Man and Iron Man. He said he wants his 2nd birthday theme to be the Hulk, as well as his halloween costume this year. I'm in pig heaven.

@ciph, bats vs predator was awesome! The fragile a got some great tracks, there is a remix of where is everybody out there that's amazing, I believe it's the Danny lohner mix, I'll throw it up for ya when I get a sec. I'm partial to broken. I wish that had way more tracks on it. Way too much good music out there that people don't know about! And thank you for your kind words and thumb! Very appreciated!

That would be the 90's animated series. Spiderman and X-men were my favorites. I also enjoyed Iron Man very much. At some point I stopped buying comics, but got interested again when the MCU was starting to take shape.

What got my into comics was a couple of things. The first was seeing these two as my first superhero movies ever





Plus, it helps that my dad has five boxes packed with nothing but comics. I still owe him a couple Ghost Rider comics for loosing his copies. I practically lived and grew up on Marvel. Was never introduced to DC until YEARS later with Batman Begins and the original Batman movie. Don't get the wrong idea though, my isn't like me when it comes to DC. Just the opposite, kind of.

Batman the Animated Series sparked my love. I had seen the Adam West batman series, but that blended in with the other reruns like Gilligans Island and Bewitched.
I basically was the classic stereotype. I was an overweight loser with low self esteem. Marvel comics, and the stories of mutations and accidents, never spoke to me because they (mostly) rely on an event happening to make someone into something great. DC comic heroes (for the most part) are inherently themselves and they have taken who they already are and choose to use that for good. I didn't find escape in comics, they taught me who I am and what I can contribute to the world. I began reading Batman in 1992 and have loved the DC/Vertigo universe since (for better and worse).

In terms of how comics have changed my life, I've been through some rough times (funny coming from a teenager). I owe my life to comics, and I certainly wouldn't be the psychopath I am today if it weren't for comics. (Its okay my friends like how crazy I am).

All in all, I've heard that story alot from my other comic reading friends, so that just goes to show how many people find comfort in the world of comic books.
