From the animation team Mikros Image, who brought to life the first Asterix film, Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods (In French:  Astérix – Le Domaine des Dieux, 2014), and Captain Underpants : The First Epic Movie (2017) released the French trailer for the titular character's sequel, Asterix:  The Secret of the Magic Potion (Astérix: Le secret de la potion magique)

This adventure is brought to life by the duo responsible for the first film, Louis Clichy and Alexandre Astier, who also  co-wrote the screenplay based off the famous French comic book character by René Goscinny.  The story follows an aging druid who asks for the aid from Asterix and Obelix to look for his replacement to help protect his village and more importantly protect the secrets of his magic potion.

The film has a release date of December 5th, 2018 and looks to only have a French release at this time.  The first film, The Mansions of the Gods, released an English dubbed version two years after its French release date, and combined the film grossed over $34 Million at the box office.  English cast included Jack Whitehall (comedian) and Nick Frost (comedian/actor, Shaun of the Dead).

Hopefully we get a English dubbed version. I liked the old cartoon movies and hardback comicbooks when I was younger and myself and my children enjoyed The Mansion Of The Gods. My children are massive fans of the Captain Underpants movie and books and just started on the new TV series on Netflix.

I don't know if anyone is interested in the french version of the Asterix animated movies, but the main character of Asterix is no longer voiced by his historic voice actor Roger Carel who retired after 2014's "Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods". Carel has done Asterix's voice in nine movies, beginning with 1967's movie "Asterix the Gaul".

Asterix's new voice actor is Christian Clavier who portrayed Asterix in his first two live-action adaptations, 1999's "Asterix & Obelix Take On Caesar" and 2002's "Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra".

@Amuro - I'm surprised he came back to the role. I seem to remember reading that Christian Clavier was fed up playing the character? Glad he's back thoug, now that Roger Carel retired that is.

@Highball -

It's a little more complicated than that. It's true that Clavier was a little tired of being mainly known as a comedy actor at the time and that he wanted to do more serious roles, but he was still ready to come back as Asterix for a third movie.

The real reason of Clavier's departure is that, in his youth, he was part of a theatre company called the Splendid. Many actors from the Splendid, who were all close friends in real life, ended up becoming big stars in french cinema, such as Clavier and another actor turned director named Gérard Jugnot. Jugnot was initially appointed as director of the third Asterix movie (which would have been an adaptation of Asterix in Spain) and planned to reunite the whole troup of the Splendid for the occasion but his script didn't pleased original Asterix co-creator Albert Uderzo who shut down production of his project, leaving Jugnot a little bitter. Clavier decided to support his friend and left the role of Asterix who eventually went to Clovis Cornillac (Asterix at the Olympic Games) and then to Edouard Baer (Asterix and Obelix: God Save Britannia) for the next two movies. Gerard Depardieu still ended up portraying Obelix in all four movies.

The cancellation of Asterix in Spain eventually led to the production of another movie, Les Bronzés 3: Amis pour la vie / French Fried Vacation 3, which reunited the whole Splendid troup many years after their disbandment.

A quick translation (sorry if my english is not perfect):

Getafix: "As this village's druid and elder, I must assume my responsabilities. All these years without any injury. Not even once have I twisted my ankle. Never. And then, suddenly... Broken ! From now on, I can no longer be the only one to know the magic potion's formula."

Asterix & Vitalstatistix: "WHAT ?!!"

Getafix: "So I will leave the village in search of a young successor to whom I will entrust the magic potion’s recipe. He's going to be our new druid."

Asterix & Vitalstatistix: "WHAT ?!!"

Geriatrix: "He's talking about some recipe."

Mrs. Geriatrix: "What are you talking about ?"

Unhygienix: "Why did we choose the most deaf of us all to spy on them ?"

Getafix: "My god, Toutatis ! Is it you ? Are you inviting me in your secret garden where apples are growing all year long, even in winter ?"

Geriatrix: "He's saying something about apples."

Fulliautomatix: "An apple recipe ?"

Cacofonix: "An apple pie, perhaps ?"

Impedimenta: "Nonsense !"

Geriatrix: "I heard 'apples'."

Mrs Geriatrix: "Are you sure you heard well, honey mine ?"

Unhygienix: "Are you sure you hear well, honey mine ?"

Obelix: "I have a question. If a new druid is making the magic potion from now on, will I finally be allowed to taste it ?"

Looks good. Hope this gets an English dub. I loved Asterix back in grade school. I've only seen the old animated Cleopatra movie. I'll have to track down the first movie at some point.

@agent025 -

I hugely recommand the animated movies The Twelve Tasks of Asterix and Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods. The best movies of the series, absolutely hilarious.

In France, the live-action movie Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra is also extremely popular (it's currently the fourth biggest box-office success of the history of french cinema) but I don't know if its humor translates well in other languages.
