How 'DAYS OF FUTURE PAST' Is An Inbetwequel & Will Unite All The X-Men Films Before X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

What continuity issues?

Wolverine:Origins/X1/X2/X3/The Wolverine all happen in one timeline.

Let's say that 'First Class' happens in a different timeline (hence the many differences in continuity between it and the other films).

'Days of Future Past' follows on from 'First Class', ten years later in the 1970's. In this film some mutants will appear from 'the future' (or so it seems). This future will actually be from the other timeline; two years after the events of 'The Wolverine' (and so ten years after 'X3').

So, this is not conventional timetravel but rather travel from 'The Original Trilogy' timeline, which from the perspective of 'First Class' is an alternative or parallel timeline.

This allows 'Days of Future Past' to be a direct sequel to 'First Class' and a spin-off pre/sequel to the original trilogy(!). Director Bryan Singer has said "it's not a sequel, it's not a prequel, it's a 'inbetwequel'."

Singer explains; "We've cracked it in a way that it makes sense. I had a two-hour conversation with James Cameron about time travel, string theory, multiverses and all that. You have to create your rules and stick wtih them. That's why Terminator and Back To The Future work so well. And there are certain mechanisms in X-Men, certain powers, perceptions and characters, that make this possible."
Singer; "I'm taking into account every movie. I'm not just grabbing my first two movies and 'First Class' and smashing them together. I'm taking into account the entire universe as it’s been laid out so far on the screen, and really respecting it and trying to work with that. People took things in various directions, so there’s some clean-up, but ultimately I’m not just ignoring them either."
Singer continues, "The movie takes place at different times. It deals with, I don't want to say time travel, but time displacement. A form of time travel which is steeped more in the X-Men [mythos]".

It is not yet known how this film will link the whole franchise together but my thoughts/hopes are that at the end of 'Days Of Future Past' we could have a kind of ultimate collection of X-Men; some from the ‘First Class Universe’ and some from the ‘Original Trilogy Universe’, all going forward together into 'X-Men Apocalypse' and 'X-Force' without having to worry about what has happened in the already released films…

Having set 'First Class' in the 1960's and part of 'Days of Future Past' in the 1970's it would make sense for the next films to be in the current day, especially if they want the new Fantastic Four to crossover at one point.

'X-Men Apocalypse' and 'X-Force' could follow on from the 'Origins/X1/X2/X3/Wolverine' timeline - after the actions of 'Days of Future Past' has reset the damage that is hinted at at the end of 'The Wolverine'...

If they wanted to fix continuity, all they would have to do is have FC be the result of time travel.

Send Wolvy back to the 40s causing a butterfly effect (which is why Xavier and Magneto don't meet at 17, why Xavier loses his legs while he still has hair, why certain people are born earlier like Emma Frost, Havoc, etc)

But I don't expect them to do this. I don't care either. Story first, continuity second.

This way deadpool could be fixed! I am very curious of how X-Force is going to end up being.

@fangz At the moment FC doesn't match with the other films (Origins/X1/X2/X3/The Wolverine) so if they are to be in the same timeline then the events of DoFP will have to reset/change certain aspects so that the original trilogy can occur - dispite contradictions in FC.

Origins is maybe a problem as it starts in 1845 but I guess if FC changes the timeline from the 1970's onwards it's ok.

But when, and in which timeline(s) will the new X-Men and Fantastic Four films take place?

Trevor Fitzroy sends the Emma Frost from the eighties back in time to World War 2 to convince Sebastian Shaw to turn Magneto into a weapon. It drastically changes what we know was supposed to happen. Fitzroy then bumps Emma up again to the sixties or slightly before to help Shaw establish his plans. Fitzroy is a member of the Hellfire club from the future.

Boom. Fixed. All of it explained. Boom boom pow!

I'm assuming Hugh Jackman will play present day 1970's Wolverine (with Adamantium claws) and the version last seen in the airport at the end of 'The Wolverine' (with bone claws).

I thought Wolverine got his adamantium in the eighties. How does he have it in the seventies now? I thought this movie was supposed to FIX things. Not [frick] em up even more.

And Fitzroy is a rogue of Bishop by the way. Bishop is in DOFP so I don't want to hear that it would be too complicated. Back to the future was complicated and everyone loved it. Well....almost everyone.

I love the X men. My favorite comic characters. I'm also not a purist. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the comic for me. The Wolverine may be my favorite X film. I didn't mind the change with Silver Samurai. It was nice to see that villains in the X universe don't have to be a bad Mutant. Stryker and the Sentinels are good examples of this too. Yeah they changed Viper into a Mutant, and she was kinda lame, but she served the story well.

My problem with the X films....vision. They have decent writers, but nobody in charge has any vision. They don't have a goal in mind where to take the characters story. X men 1 & 2 were great. When you got to see Jean Grey wrapped in flames when she sacrificed her life to save the team, I got goose bumps. Then in X 3 they turned her into that girl from Exorcist. Right there they started to lose track of their continuity. Cause Fox let Ratner change what was already introduced. Maybe that wasn't Ratners idea. Point is Fox let it happen.

Like I said it doesn't have to be the same as the comics for me to appreciate it. Sabretooth being his brother was a huge change. But then how come there wasn't much of a connection between the two in X 1? Yeah Wolvie couldn't remember him, but Fox knew when they made Origins that the two were gonna cross paths again. Why not take measures to prepare for it? Cause they obviously don't give a shit. Colossus didn't have an accent, no big deal right? Different version of the character. Right? Or maybe Fox just didn't care to find a big actor that could pull off a Russian accent. Lady Deathstrike as a Mutant? The Reavers are one of those villains that aren't Mutants. Could they have introduced them in X 2? Probably not in the time they had. This one doesn't bother me. Missed opportunity. ..possibly.

First Class just made things even more complicated. I loved the movie. I loved it more when I thought it could be a reboot. But nope. They wanted it to be a prequel. It doesn't fit with the other movies. Cause Fox let the people in charge of the movie have too much creative control. If they didn't let them make those changes, would it really of made the movie any less enjoyable? No. Its an excuse. They could of used Selene in First Class instead of Emma. Hell, they didn't have to cripple Xavier at the end of the film the way they did. They did it for shock factor to serve the story of THAT film. Not considering the ongoing story of all of the films.

I'm sorry for my rant. This is just my opinion, but I just don't have faith that Fox can fix what they already broke. What have they don't to convince us otherwise? I liked every X film. Origins and X 3 are not my favorites, but I can watch them. I just hate that I have to pretend that their two different franchises for it to make any sense. People that can't accept this truth are just in plain old DENIAL.

I hope I'm wrong. I really do. I'm still waiting to see the X men I know and love on the big screen.

And one more thing! Why the [frick] can't we have comic accurate costumes in DOFP? It takes place in the future. Since nobody knows what will be acceptable wardrobe in the future, you can make your characters wear whatever the hell you want them to! For once, we could of seen the X men in the uniforms we know and love. If it would of looked goofy, who gives a shit. Its the future. When you do a film that takes place in the future you decide what the norm is. Maybe in the future it wouldn't be so goofy for Wolverine to wear his mask. See.....Fox is lazy with their excuses too.

At this point I've stopped giving a [frick] about the timelines as long as they deliver a good film

@OldGreg Thanks, I think something like this will happen with the outcome of a new timeline for the future films.

Not sure where 'The Wolverine 2' would fit in though...

I'm hoping the continuity errors are fixed in Days of Future Past and at some point Cyclops will be brought back into the series. I'm aware there is time travel in the film but i'm curious to see how it'll work maybe there is a consequence or a downfall to the process of time travel established on some one hence Wolverine having his healing factor as to why he is the only one that can be sent back through time.

I dont know how the first class group can be brought into the present day as it might be a little too complicated then again most films with time travel can be complex.

We fixed X Men... it was easy... multiple realities. Yup, because it was to difficult to folloe the fu&#ing Uncanny X Men from the comics, even loosely. Nooe, dont read them, well just throw characters together. It must suck for FOX to realise they missed a HUGE oppertunity.
