With the success of both Man of Steel and Ironman 3 this past summer, one must wonder where they rank in the pantheon of great superhero flicks. Are you kidding me?! They don't! Then it got me thinking, we now live in the golden age of superhero films. In just the past five years we've had an influx of quality superhero flicks that rocked our imaginations and made us feel that childlike wonder again. Because of it, I took a trip down memory lane to see which ones, in my opinion, are the best of the best.

I must say though that I didn't get to watch Unbreakable and the two Hellboy movies so you won't be seeing any of those here. With that said, here are my top ten superhero movies of all-time.

How the hell is Avengers and Watchmen not up there???
EdgyOutsider
EdgyOutsider - 7/15/2013, 9:07 AM
Watchmen should've been the honorable mention. The Avengers in my eyes should be number one. The Dark Knight (don't get me wrong here) is a great movie and like Iron Man is a case where one person made the movie as great as it is. Without Ledger, The Dark Knight is juat another Batman movie with The Joker as the villain. Iron Man could've flopped but, RDJ saved it and us. The Dark Knight is a crime thriller, not a comic book movie. Not to mention Maggie Gyllenhaal is almost as terrible of an acrress as Saoirse Ronan... and I hate Ronan and hate saying the name of her. [frick]!!!

Avengers should be number one because it IS a comic book movie, it doesn't try to be anything else, it's got a simple story that works within a good runtime, within the shared universe and gets us along without boring us *cough* TDK *cough* and has enough character develipment that it's not style over substance. You wanted to see a different movie. I went and saw what I wanted.

A Marvel event that was the greatest thrill I've had experienced in the theater full of geek outs and a solid enough story with enough character development so I'm not watching something hollow. I want to shut my brain off and was rewarded for it. I respect your list but, Avengers just is the greatest CBM yet maybe ever.

@Koytoys No Avengers, You Basterd! :)

@Crossbones. I disagree. Batman comics are crime thrillers sometimes and can be very adult. There are comics that try to be the very best of the medium, that is more than colorful costumes with good vs evil. Like Watchmen. Besides even if it wasn't Heath Ledger in the role, no one can deny the Joker is a very good character in every medium. Heath might be the mannerism but the character is still awesome in script form.

dbatman: Never doubted the character of The Joker. I just think.without Ledger, The Dark Knight wouldn't be put on the pedistal of what others look up to as a great movie. I love The Dark Knight trilogy but, I would be lying to myself if I were to say The Joker wasn't the only reason the movie kept my interest. I don't buy comics cause I don't have the money to spend on them. I always read my dads old comics isnstead. I grew up a Marvel guy so, when I think a comicbook movie. I expect these extraoridnary things to happen, great action and character moments and accepting it is a comicbook movie. Be fun, why be real? DC movies are starting to lose the sense of fun. I found more fun in The Dark Knight Rises than I did in The Dark Knight and Man of Steel. There are fun moments in The Dark Knight. But, they're going a bit too dark and serious for my taste. I felt no sense of joy or fun watching Man of Steel to the point I couldn't enjoy the undeniably awesome action scenes (half the CGI in the final battle sucked a lot of ass).

But, I'll always agree to disagree.

@Crossbones Why should all comic book movies have the same "fun" formula? If you don't like TDK trilogy that's fine, don't watch it. I for one am glad that someone actually took a comic book character as a serious drama and didn't apologize for it or cop out by making it "fun" just incase it sucked as a story *cough* IM3 *cough*.

@Crossbones,

Can't argue with that. Dc movies are loosing there fun factor. If all the movies of Dc is gonna be like MOS i dont want a Justice League movie Besides I hated MOS. Don't get me wrong I'll watch it a million times after but thats jst because I'm a superman fan hahaha. THe action is good I guess, still repeatative though.

Watched Dark Knight again and can't get past the scene where he falls with Racheal. He doesn't attempt to slow down, they'd be dead. I know with all the other stuff why can't I "suspend my disbelief", the problem is that gravity is very cut and dry. So I agree with Crossbones, without the Joker, it isn't put on this pedestal. Rewatching Superman the Movie, the problem is the Deux es machina at the end. He pretty much goes against what he stands for in reversing time. So that is less a disbelief issue as it is a theological one. I agree with your #1 though.

Here we go again.... you people never learn

@theyoungman: I love The Dark Knight trilogy. I'm not sayong go Iron Man 3 and go overboard on the humor. Just have a sense of fun. Doesn't always have to be dark and gritty. Batman, Punisher, Blade, Ghost Rider, DareDevil all require dark and gritty. Doesn't mean you can't have some fun. Batman Begins balanced the fun with the dark and gritty. Man of Steel had no sense of fun or joy.

I think Avengers should be on the list but not as number 1. I loved the movie and it was a lot of fun but it is just special effects fun with a script that that had a lot of funny jokes in it. Iron Man is still the best Marvel movie because it had more substance and made you care for the characters.

my list

1. The Dark Knight
2. Iron Man
3. Avengers
4. Spider-Man
5. V For Vendetta
6. Batman Begins
7. Man of Steel (is my number 1 when it comes to action)
8. Spider-Man 2
9. Captain America The First Avenger
10. Watchmen

Honorable mentions to Blade/Blade 2, The Incredible Hulk, Batman, The Dark Knight Rises, 300, and Thor.

Cool list and format

1. Batman Begins
2. The Avengers
3. X2
4. Captain America: The First Avenger
5. 300
6. Man of Steel
7. RED
8. Iron Man 3
9. The Dark Knight Rises
10. X-Men: First Class

Great job. Here's my verdict -

1. The Dark Knight
2. Batman Begins
3. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
4. Watchmen
5. Man of Steel
6. Spider-Man
7. Iron Man
8. X-Men: First Class
9. The Avengers
10. The Dark Knight Rises

NOTES: I wasn't a fan of either Superman or Superman II, although many consider those some of the best. I also haven't seen Spider-Man 2 in a long time, so I don't remember how much I liked it. X-Men and X2 were just okay in my book, and The Avengers gets duller every time I watch it. I haven't seen things like 300 or Kick-Ass.

Thanks for those who appreciated it. I have to clear it though that this is a "SUPERHERO" movie list and not a "COMIC BOOK" movie list. so Scott Pilgrim and 300 are out of question. But V for Vendetta and Kick-Ass counts in my opinion.

@Crossbones

dbatman's right. Can't argue with him, he's the batman!haha!

Seriously though he's right. The good Batman comics are crime dramas and that's what made Batman real good. And it shows in TDK. I also seriously had fun with Heath Ledger's performance. But he's not the only reason it's great, the script all-around was great. And the underlying themes and questions of morality are really really executed well. That's the reason why I think it's number 1.

As for DC films getting too dark and serious. I agree. I think it started in TDKR. And MOS was just sad, imo. I genuinely didn't enjoy it.

As for the Watchmen, i think it had great ideas but i don't think they were executed well. The acting was bad and didn't do a lot of its characters justice.

As for Avengers, yeah I enjoyed it a lot! Brought out the kid in me! But for me the story was yes solid but not good enough compared to those that made my ten. And like stay puffed said, it gets duller every time I watch it. Can't blame anyone for liking it a lot though.

Thanks for viewing and reading! Hope ya'll like it! :D

@jojofmd

So even if you had problems with TDK you still agree it's number 1?

About Superman, yes I agree it was deux es machina. But I think it did it's job of addressing the moral issue within the movie. It's what makes Superman human.

@SDS: Agree to disagree. Loved Iron Man but, Captain Americs has the most substance and made you care about the characters. I cared about Steve Rogers. In Iron Man, I liked Tony but as with the general audience, I only cared about Iron Man.

@koytoys: Personally, it doesn't get dull to me

Okay, you didn't think that Avengers had a good enough story to make the top 10, but you think the original Superman did? Really? The story in the first part of Superman, about his origins, coming to Earth, being found by the Kents, and so on was great. However, the story in the 2nd part of the film was so bad that it makes the overall film only average at best. It has the worst possible Lex Luthor imaginable, with one of the dumbest schemes ever. Never mind the whole spinning the Earth if the opposite direction to go back in time nonsense. As for the lack of character development in Avengers, that's what the solo films were for, to develop the characters so that you could have more time for action in this one.

I loved the Superman films when I was a kid (1 & 2, let us never speak of 3, and I try to pretend 4 didn't even happen), and I still think they're okay, but they are not in the same league as most of the good superhero movies since the 1989 Batman. If I put either film in a top 10 list, I would put Superman 2 as #10. And I doubt I would actually even do that. Man of Steel is better. Better action, better origin story in my opinion (I would change a couple of things, but overall better), better Zod with better motivation for his actions, much better Lois Lane, and no really stupid Lex Luthor. Most importantly, no scene of Lois flying with Superman with inner monologue narration about whether or not he can read her mind. A monologue that actually tries to rhyme. It just makes me want to puke, and that scene alone would keep that movie out of the top 10.

And quite frankly, I don't think animated films should be considered in the same league as live action. And spoofs definitely shouldn't count. Oh, and how can Batman Begins be the movie of the decade when it was in the same decade as the film you put ahead of it, The Dark Knight? Shouldn't TDK be the movie of the decade in that case?

I decided to go ahead and make a top 10 list.

10. Batman(1989)
9. X-Men: First Class
8. X-Men
7. Thor
6. Batman Begins
5. Iron Man
4. Man of Steel
3. Captain America
2. The Dark Knight
1. The Avengers

For me, #2-#6 are practically all tied. I loved all of them and can watch them on TV anytime. Honorable mentions would be Spiderman (first and second ones), Superman II, X-Men 2, and the other 2 Iron Man movies. I liked parts of The Dark Knight Rises (the character of Selina Kyle/Catwoman in particular), but hated other parts of it. I've never been able to sit through Watchmen.

@Lhornbk

I agree, the 1st half of Superman is what makes it a clasic. It's a timeless tale and pretty much the formula for almost every superhero movie.

Yes I agree with the second half being less than the first. But I don't think it fell off. And Lex was the Lex in the comics at the time and serve well within the light and comical world realm of the film.

And even if his plot was a little ridiculous, it tested Superman. And I think it's something Man of Steel sorely needs. I'm not looking for saving a cat from a tree thing. just show a love for humanity. The deux es machina ending, yes ridiculous, but ties up the theme of the film, which is responsibility.

As for Batman Begins, I meant it being the most influential film being the reason that I think it's the film of the decade. TSK is #1 because I believe it's the better film. And it's influence was felt once the decade has passed.

Thanks for reading! :D

Yeah I understand. The action was cool especially the first time I saw it. Geeked out completely. For me though I can't watch it again and again and feel the same.

@Lhornbk

While I disagree on everything you said, I'll focus on the last paragraph. Why can't animated films be counted? Are animated films inferior? Any animated film can be as good a live action as long as it has a good story. Are you saying E.T and Iron giant aren't equally good even though both executed the story equally well? In fact make The Incredibles a live action film and nothing would be different. How bout spoofs; why can't it count? It's still as superhero film in a list of Best Superhero Movie list. If it's good why can't it count?

Sorry, typo, your #2. TDK, used to be my #1 but after rewatching it and realizing there is absolutely no way they could have survived, which is just lazy writing and scripting. (How easy could it have been to have something to slow them down, it's been done in Batman movies before). So just letting them hit the car was just stupid. So even though Ledger is amazing and I love the Nolan Batman movies, its no longer my favorite. Same with Superman. As a young kid I was so entranced by it but as an adult the ending is to much. I would've put Blade on this, probably at #10.

In my opinion, the Avengers wasn't supposed to have this great story, and it was supposed to just be 'bad guy taking over the world'. If you look under that plot, however, you'll see a much bigger one.
