AVATAR 3 Director James Cameron Says The Threequel Will Explore New Tribes...And Planets!

Avatar: The Way of Water has earned over $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, but a third movie will happen, regardless. Now, director James Cameron has revealed some exciting new details about that!

Avatar: The Way of Water is still bringing in big numbers at the global box office, and while it's too soon to say whether the sequel will reach the same heights as its 2009 predecessor, the franchise's future looks bright. Avatar 3 has already been shot so we're getting that whatever happens, and filmmaker James Cameron has now revealed some interesting new details.

After showing us a whole new side of Na'vi culture in The Way of Water, the director says the third instalment is going to turn the spotlight on yet another of Pandora's indigenous tribes.

Asked what fans can expect, Cameron tells 20 Minutes (via SFFGazette.com), "Different cultures from those I have already shown. The fire will be represented by the 'Ash People.'"

"I want to show the Na’vi in a different light because, so far, I have only shown their good sides," he continued. "In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite."

We're certainly intrigued by that prospect, as the recently released sequel didn't break as much new ground as we'd have liked. However, in an effort to really move this sci-fi series forward, Cameron says the threequel will also take us to planets beyond Pandora as we continue exploring this future.

"We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters," Cameron promises. "I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal. But, obviously, everything will depend on how Avatar 2 is received, if it finds its audience."

We've already heard that there are plans to shift the action to Earth, though it didn't sound like that was something we'd get to see until the fourth Avatar movie. While The Way of Water felt a little filler at times, it's clear the filmmaker has plenty of ambitious ideas for this story as it continues playing out on our screens.

Avatar 3 is currently set to be released on December 20, 2024.

Avatar 3, sully and his family go to the desert and meet cat people and learn their ways while fighting of Stephen Lang who wants to kill them because.

Avatar 4: they learn the ways of Mountain Eskimo cats.

Avatar 5:space cats, learn the ways of cats in space, like cute cuddly romulans.

@tmp3 - good on what front? First guess is visually, but what about story and characters?
tmp3
tmp3 - 1/2/2023, 7:31 AM
@bkmeijer1 - world-building, thought the kids were a lot more engaging than a lot of the characters in the first one, worthington was actually good this time around, and the set-pieces were just incredible. also thought quaritch was a lot of fun.
spider was just ass though. i feel like he's only in the plot to give another character an extra layer and also so cameron could do the magic trick of perfectly integrating a human in a cg space (he pulled it off, it's the most seamless it's ever been). but the character is just so lame, and i felt like the actor didn't add much to it either.

@tmp3 - so the new stuff that it brings to the table is great? Good to hear.

The visuals were the only reason I wanted to watch the movie, but good to know there's more (and not just repeating stuff).

Also, what about Saldana? She's always great too

@bkmeijer1 - saldana's good but... i feel like neytiri arc didn't give her a lot to do, which is especially bad since she was the highlight of the first one. maybe it was a trade-off since they actually give jake a lot of development now that he's a father.
something that helps is the reef clan is so much more interesting than the clan we saw in the original, and the kids (especially sigourney weaver's kiri) all have a lot of personality.
but also, yeah - the visuals are incredible and seeing his in IMAX 3D rocks

@tmp3 - gotcha. If I'm gonna watch it, it'll definitely be in 3D. Not sure yet about HFR though (got no IMAX where I live)

@bkmeijer1 - ahh sorry man i was abt to say saw the hfr imAx 3d and it was great… definitely best 3D Ive ever seen, and I used to hunt down 3D blurays for my 3D hdtv.

The story is a retread and the movie is pretty good at best, but the 3D is worth the price of admission alone. Its like the best planet earth/underwater documentary youve ever seen, in the best 3D youve ever seen. Or the best ride at a theme park youve ever been on.

And motion smoothing usually makes me super annoyed, but the hfr truly does help in clarity and motion sickness, and at least on the imax screen I saw (Hollywood chinese theater) the brightness and resolution were truly excellent.

@ReverseFlasher - and as someone else said saldana is a much smaller part, I was kinda surprised. But given the fact theres more coming its clear this movie was more a focus on him, while the third seems set to focus more on her again.

@ReverseFlasher - ''Or the best ride at a theme park youve ever been on.''

Well, I have been on Flight of Passage and that was the best ride at a theme I've been on. And coincedentally that's also Avatar.

Anyway, one of my friends said the opposite about HFR (it actually made him motion sick).

So the next element is gonna be fire? Guess we'll be going to the moon of Mustafar.

Also, if elements are the motif of each movie, then what was the element of the first one? I'm guessing air, or maybe even wood (one of five in Chinese philosophy).
KiddSoul
KiddSoul - 1/3/2023, 6:06 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I'm assuming the first one is the element of Earth.

The planet of Pandora, its resources of unobtanium, the various plant life, nature, etc...
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/3/2023, 9:21 AM
@KiddSoul - yeah that makes sense as well. That means we'll already have earth, water and fire, so I guess the fourth one is gonna be air instead then

Though Cameron isn't fully admitting to how pretty cookie cutter he made the first two movies I at least am glad we are FINALLY going to see him flip the script for the third movie. Let's face it; the first two movies are only really sold by how beautiful the world and environment and 3D looks as the characters and story for the most part are as flat as crap. And really feels like the second movie spent so much time in the ocean due to Cameron's obsession with deep diving and exploring it's beauty not for any real narrative reason so doing something DIFFERENT with the story I'm all for. Honestly the idea of this time around getting a BAD Na'vi tribe who may be looking to wipe out all humans feeling they are all evil would be interesting especially if they were allowed to say blow up earth which feels pretty out there but clear the focus of this world isn't on Earth but it would be a very different thing to do with this kind of story.

Guessing the Ash people live around a volcano, unless it's metaphorical for them being covered in hot desert sand. Volcano would be a lot cooler though, if impractical for casual living. I can't wait to see where the series goes, I think part 3 is the end of the Jake & Neytiri saga so I hope they out with a bang or at least get their happily ever after.

Does anyone know why Jake Sully doesn't have his giant raptor mount in Way of Water? It felt so weird seeing him back in his small bird when Toruk Makto rides a ginormous pterodactyl.
