AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Director James Cameron Has Already Netted Nearly $100 Million For The Sequel

New details on how filmmaker James Cameron has been compensated for his work on the Avatar sequel have surfaced, and hefty back-end bonuses means The Way of Water has already made him nearly $100 million!

Avatar: The Way of Water recently surpassed Titanic to become the third highest-grossing movie of all time. While it's unlikely to catch up with Avengers: Endgame or Avatar (short of several re-releases), there's no denying that this sequel is a huge hit.

Disney is no doubt very happy with the movie's performance, hence why plans for an Avatar attraction in Disneyland were recently made official.

Beyond that, we know Avatar 3 has already been shot, while writer and director James Cameron has confirmed he's filmed at least a handful of scenes for a fourth movie. This sci-fi franchise is here to stay, but the person who has perhaps benefitted most from The Way of Water's success is Cameron himself.

According to Forbes (via SFFGazette.com), the director looks set to net at least $95 million for the movie thanks to a deal that means he receives significant back-end bonuses for crossing certain box office thresholds.

We're guessing this barely scratches the surface because Cameron is said to have earned upwards of $350 million for Avatar by the time all was said and done!

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the franchise reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, the sequel begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive,  and the tragedies they endure.

"Avatar: The Way of Water’s epic visuals are impossible to find fault with," we said in our review last year, "but with a paper-thin, painfully boring story and little in the way of character development, this three-hour snoozefest is all style, no substance."

Avatar 3 is set to be released in theaters on December 20, 2024.

He earned all his money by delivering a big winner for the studio.

It is certainly a beautiful movie. Just like the first one, imagine how much it would have made if the movie were good.
