AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Is Now The Seventh-Highest Grossing Film Of All Time With $1.7 Billion

There was no stopping the original Avatar when it hit theaters all those years ago, and, despite a lot of scepticism in the build-up to its release, James Cameron's sequel, The Way of Water, is proving to be a box office juggernaut in its own right.

The latest figures are in, and the sci-fi epic has now passed the $500 million mark domestically after taking in a massive $45 million in its fourth weekend. Only two other movies have managed this impressive feat in the pandemic era: Spider-Man: No Way Home and Top-Gun: Maverick.

This also gives the sequel the second-largest fourth weekend BO gross of all-time after, you guessed it, the first Avatar, which took in $50.3 million back in 2010.

Overseas, The Way of Water amassed $132.6 million over the weekend for an international total of $1.19 billion, and global cume of $1.7 billion. This makes it the seventh-highest grossing movie of all time, overtaking Jurassic World ($1.67 billion).

Cameron recently confirmed that Avatar 2 will turn a profit, which means those sequels are on the way!

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet. Screenplay by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Story by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver & Josh Friedman & Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham serve as the film’s executive producers.
